The Internet and Telecommunications Policy - Selected Papers From the 1995 Telecommunications Policy Research Conference... The Internet and Telecommunications Policy - Selected Papers From the 1995 Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (Hardcover)
Gerald W. Brock, Gregory L. Rosston
R2,709 Discovery Miles 27 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is based on the Telecommunications Policy Research Conference which reports on research into telecommunications policy issues. While the conference is now a respectable 23 years old, this is only the second printed edition of selected papers. A new law, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, accelerated the process of integration in the communication industry and made major revisions to the Communications Act of 1934 that increase the incentive for integration within the industry. Although the papers in this volume were written prior to the passage of the new law, their importance is merely enhanced by it. They deal with fundamental, complex policy problems that arise when previously separate segments of the telecommunications industry are integrated, rather than specific regulatory rules that are likely to be changed under the new law. With the passage of this law, the timeframe for developing appropriate policies for an integrated industry has been shortened. Changes expected to occur over a period of several years will now likely occur much more rapidly. These papers provide insights to help guide the transition in the industry.
Divided into five parts, this volume:
* deals with problems of transforming local exchange telephone service from a monopoly in each geographical area to an interconnected competitive network of networks,
* considers the pricing problems that arise in an integrated network carrying traffic of different types across multiple service providers,
* examines the problem of achieving interoperability in complex networks,
* considers issues of intellectual property that arise in expected integrated networks of the future, and
* discusses electronic publication of scholarly journals, copyright protection, and the applicability of copyright law in the digital age.

Toward A Competitive Telecommunication Industry - Selected Papers From the 1994 Telecommunications Policy Research Conference... Toward A Competitive Telecommunication Industry - Selected Papers From the 1994 Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (Hardcover)
Gerald W. Brock
R1,144 Discovery Miles 11 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Providing an authoritative perspective on the best current research regarding telecommunication policy, this book is based on the 22nd Annual Telecommunications Policy Research Conference. The papers focus on the critical policy issues created by increasing competition in the industry. The book contains a careful analysis of local competition and interconnection, international competition, universal service issues, the Internet and emerging new methods of communication, and the first amendment problems created by changing telecommunication technology.
It brings together -- in a convenient form -- a wide range of important scholarship on telecommunication policy that otherwise would require extensive research into a variety of journals, government filings, and unpublished papers.

Adam Smith Goes to Moscow - A Dialogue on Radical Reform (Paperback, 1st Paperback Ed): Walter Adams, James W. Brock Adam Smith Goes to Moscow - A Dialogue on Radical Reform (Paperback, 1st Paperback Ed)
Walter Adams, James W. Brock; Foreword by Robert Heilbroner
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Adam Smith Goes to Moscow" is a captivating dialogue between the head of a hypothetical, formerly socialist East European country and a fervently market-minded American adviser. Their spirited give-and-take highlights the monumental political as well as economic complexities currently faced by the former Soviet bloc countries as they struggle to transform themselves into free market economies.

Antitrust Economics on Trial - A Dialogue on the New Laissez-Faire (Paperback): Walter Adams, James W. Brock Antitrust Economics on Trial - A Dialogue on the New Laissez-Faire (Paperback)
Walter Adams, James W. Brock
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is it the central purpose of American antitrust policy to encourage decentralization of economic power? Or is it to promote "consumer welfare"? Is there a painful trade-off between market dominance and economic "efficiency"? What is the proper role of government in this area? In recent years the public policy debate on these core questions has been marked by a cacophony of divergent opinions--theorists against empiricists, apostles of the "new learning" against defenders of the traditional structure-conduct-performance paradigm, "laissez-faire" advocates against "interventionists." Utilizing a distinctively innovative format, Walter Adams and James Brock examine these issues in the context of a courtroom dialogue among a proponent of the new learning (Chicago School), a prosecuting attorney, and a U.S. district judge. In contrast to bloodless "scientific" treatises or ideologically inspired polemical tracts, this book lays bare the central arguments in the debate about free-market economics and the latent assumptions and disguised terminology on which those arguments are based. The dialogue is both gripping and entertaining--designed by the authors to be reminiscent at times of the Theater of the Absurd.

The Bigness Complex confronts head-on the myth that organizational giantism leads to economic efficiency and well-being in the modern age. On the contrary, it demonstrates how bigness undermines our economic productivity and progress, endangers our democratic freedoms, and exacerbates our economic problems and challenges. This new edition has a thoroughly updated variety of issues, examples, and new developments, including government bailouts of the airline industry; regulation of biotechnology; the fiasco of recent electricity deregulation; and mergers and consolidations in oil, radio, and grocery retailing. The analysis is framed in the timeless context of American distrust of concentrations of power. The authors show how both the left and the right fail to address the central problem of power in formulating their diagnoses and recommendations. The book concludes with an alternative public philosophy as a viable guidepost for public policy toward business in a free-enterprise democracy.

Sessions with Luke - Following Jesus on the Journey to Christian Character (Paperback): Timothy W Brock Sessions with Luke - Following Jesus on the Journey to Christian Character (Paperback)
Timothy W Brock
R336 Discovery Miles 3 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sessions with Luke is a ten-lesson study designed to help participants explore and embody Christian character through reflection on biblical truths illustrated in the book of Luke. Each session is followed by a thought-provoking resource page of questions that allows for a deeper experience of the scriptural passages. These resource pages can be used by seminar leaders during preparation and group discussion, as well as in individual Bible study. Timothy Brock takes readers on a journey through Luke's brilliant collection of memorable stories, challenging teachings, and well-known parables describing the life and work of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, the stories found in Luke's gospel demonstrate that accepting the invitation to follow Jesus requires a radically transformed relationship with God and with other people. Followers of Jesus are encouraged to emulate and to embody the character of Christ as they create a lifestyle of obedience to God and service to others.

The Second Information Revolution (Hardcover, New): Gerald W. Brock The Second Information Revolution (Hardcover, New)
Gerald W. Brock
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Thanks to inexpensive computers and data communications, the speed and volume of human communication are exponentially greater than they were even a quarter-century ago. Not since the advent of the telephone and telegraph in the nineteenth century has information technology changed daily life so radically. We are in the midst of what Gerald Brock calls a second information revolution.

Brock traces the complex history of this revolution, from its roots in World War II through the bursting bubble of the Internet economy. As he explains, the revolution sprang from an interdependent series of technological advances, entrepreneurial innovations, and changes to public policy. Innovations in radar, computers, and electronic components for defense projects translated into rapid expansion in the private sector, but some opportunities were blocked by regulatory policies. The contentious political effort to accommodate new technology while protecting beneficiaries of the earlier regulated monopoly eventually resulted in a regulatory structure that facilitated the explosive growth in data communications. Brock synthesizes these complex factors into a readable economic history of the wholesale transformation of the way we exchange and process information.

From Chance to Choice - Genetics and Justice (Paperback, Revised): Allen Buchanan, Dan W. Brock, Norman Daniels, Daniel Wikler From Chance to Choice - Genetics and Justice (Paperback, Revised)
Allen Buchanan, Dan W. Brock, Norman Daniels, Daniel Wikler 2
R1,248 Discovery Miles 12 480 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Written by four internationally renowned bioethicists, From Chance to Choice is the first systematic treatment of the fundamental ethical issues underlying the application of genetic technologies to human beings. Probing the implications of the remarkable advances in genetics, the authors ask how should these affect our understanding of distributive justice, equality of opportunity, the rights and obligations as parents, the meaning of disability, and the role of the concept of human nature in ethical theory and practice. The book offers a historical context to contemporary debate over the use of these technologies by examining the eugenics movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition, appendices explain the nature of genetic causation, gene-environment interaction, and expose widespread misconceptions of genetic determinism, as well as outlining the nature of the ethical analysis used in the book. The questions raised in this book will be of interest to any reflective reader concerned about science and society and the rapid development of biotechnology, as well as to professionals in such areas as philosophy, bioethics, medical ethics, health management, law, and political science.

Defining Citizenship in Archaic Greece (Hardcover): Alain Duplouy, Roger W. Brock Defining Citizenship in Archaic Greece (Hardcover)
Alain Duplouy, Roger W. Brock
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Citizenship is a major feature of contemporary national and international politics, but rather than being a modern phenomenon it is in fact a legacy of ancient Greece. The concept of membership of a community and participation in its social and political life first appeared some three millennia ago, but only towards the end of the fourth century BC did Aristotle offer the first explicit statement about it. Though long accepted, this definition remains deeply rooted in the philosophical and political thought of the classical period, and probably fails to account accurately for either the preceding centuries or the dynamics of emergent cities: as such, historians are now challenging the application of the Aristotelian model to all Greek cities regardless of chronology, and are looking instead for alternative ways of conceiving citizenship and community. Focusing on archaic Greece, this volume brings together an array of renowned international scholars with the aim of exploring new routes to archaic Greek citizenship and constructing a new image of archaic cities, which are no longer to be considered as primitive or incomplete classical poleis. The essays collected here have not been tailored to endorse any specific view, with each contributor bringing his or her own approach and methodology to bear across a range of specific fields of enquiry, from law, cults, and military obligations, to athletics, commensality, and descent. The volume as a whole exemplifies the living diversity of approaches to archaic Greece and to the Greek city, combining both breadth and depth of insight with an opportunity to venture off the beaten track.
