This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the
Symposium on Operations Research 2000 (OR 2000) held at the Dresden
University of Technology, September 9-12, 2000. This international
Symposium was organized by the German Operations Research Society
GOR in the series of its annual conferences. The Symposium had 354
participants from IS countries around the world. The 210 lectures
reflected the broad spectrum of Operations Research and its
interdisciplinarity, involving economics, mathematics and computer
science. The volume is arranged in 14 Sections, like the
conference, and a special section with the papers of the winners of
the GOR Diploma Thesis award. The 86 papers have been selected by
the chairpersons of the sections and the editors. Compared to
previous conferences, the number of sections has been reduced by
combining some overlapping sections: The former sections for linear
and nonlinear programming are now contained in the 'Continuous
Optimization' Section, the graph theory has been included in the
'Discrete and Combinatorial Optimization' Section. The traditional
application fields are growing together in the scope of the current
'Supply Chain Management' thinking. This is considered in a
corresponding section. Its high number of papers at the conference
and in this volume underlines the importance of Operations Research
for this modem management concept. For the first time, the
conference included a section on 'Didactics of Operations
Research', which found a great echo and is represented by four
papers in this volume.
On the subject of stomach and gastric diseases, current cli- nical,
morphological, pharmacological, biochemical as well as cellular and
molecularbiological aspects will be presen- ted. The articles of
the first part of this book will discuss the normal functions of
the stomach (such as motility, secre- tion, tissue regeneration
etc.). The second part deals with pathophysiological aspects (such
as inflammation, ulceration and tumor formation) and modern
possibilities of treatment. The authors aim at gaining a deeper
knowledge of the sto- mach, its physiology and pathophysiology in
order to use this knowledge for the better of their patients.
In OCtober 1986, recognized authorities from a variety of
disciplines met in Lisbon, Portugal, to review recent knowledge on
eicosanoids - i. e., prostaglandins, throm boxane A , and
leukotrienes - and their role in gastrointestinal diseases. 2
Briefly, in the stomach endogenous as well as exogenous
prostaglandins may mediate cytoprotective actions in that they
stimulate gastric mucus production, bicar bonate secretion and
cellular regeneration while providing adequate mucosal blood flow.
In contrast, thromboxane A2 by vasoconstriction may act as an
ulcerogenic substance. Diarrheal states may be associated with
prostaglandins of types E and F as they are capable to enhance
intestinal water and electrolyte secretions. In chronic in
flammatory bowel disease, mucosal synthesis of leukotrienes was
found to be increased more markedly than that of prostaglandins
suggesting that leukotrienes may have a major part in the
pathogenesis of that disease. In this volume, which is an
elaborated collection of the papers given on occasion of the
above-mentioned symposium, the facts and problems associated with
prostanoid substances are dealt with in four sections on 1.
biochemistry, biology and pharmacology of eicosanoids, 2.
physiologic and pathophysiologic aspects, 3. established
therapeutic implications, and 4. treatment perspectives. We believe
that the publication of these contributions by leading workers in
the given fields provides a comprehensive and up-to-date appraisal
of the role of eicosanoids in gastrointestinal diseases, and it is
hoped that this volume will be of value to both basic scientists
and practicing clinicians.
These proceedings of Falk Symposium 110 on `Intestinal Mucosa and
its Diseases - Pathophysiology and Clinics' held at Titisee/Black
Forest, Germany, 16-17 October 1998, comprehensively review salient
clinical as well as scientific aspects - pending or settled - of
the main intestinal diseases. In particular, chapters deal with
infectious and neuroendocrine diarrhoeas, coeliac sprue, allergic
enteropathy, intestinal lymphomas, colorectal carcinomas, and
chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, in terms of clinical
presentation as well as underlying mechanisms. This book therefore
aims to bridge the gaps between basic science and clinics for the
eventual treatment of patients afflicted with these diseases.
Darstellung der pathophysiologischen Grundlagen der wichtis- sten
gastroenterologischen Erkrankungen.
verfaBt. Damit sollen einem groBeren Interessentenkreis die
Informationen zugiinglich gemacht werden, die bei dem
internationalen Magen- Symposium im September 1992 in Munster
zusammengetragen worden sind. Zum Thema "Magen und
Magenkrankheiten" werden - auf verschiedenen Ebenen der
biologischen Organisation - aktuelle Aspekte aus klinischer,
morphologischer, pharmakologischer, phy- siologischer,
