Vernacular Aesthetics in the Later Middle Ages explores the formal composition, public performance, and popular reception of vernacular poetry, music, and prose within late medieval French and English cultures. This collection of essays considers the extra-literary and extra-textual methods by which vernacular forms and genres were obtained and examines the roles that performance and orality play in the reception and dissemination of those genres, arguing that late medieval vernacular forms can be used to delineate the interests and perspectives of the subaltern. Via an interdisciplinary approach, contributors use theories of multimodality, translation, manuscript studies, sound studies, gender studies, and activist New Formalism to address how and for whom popular, vernacular medieval forms were made.

Does participatory governance benefit the environment? The European Water Framework Directive (WFD), which came into force in 2000 with the aim of revolutionizing European water governance, mandates participatory river basin management planning across the European Union. The belief of European policymakers and the European Commission is that participation will deliver better policy outputs and implementation. This book examines a range of approaches to participatory river basin management planning, and considers whether and how participation impacted on the environmental standard of planning documents, quality of implementation, and social outcomes. It draws on evidence from WFD implementation in eight case studies from Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom on the basis of a matched comparative case study design. The Directive sets common timeframes and procedural requirements, which provides a perfect test-bed and unique opportunity to study the effects of participation on implementation and outcomes in comparative perspective.

The High- Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) is not only providing the facilities, hard- and software for a growing community of researchers and developers, but it also promotes the know-how to use supercomputers effi- ciently. Regular exchange of information, of ideas and methods is essential in improving the proper use of the facilities,and their performance as well as the application of algorithms and of simulation techniques. A Second Result and Review Workshop on High-Performance Computing in Science and Engineering, (October 4 -6,1999) was organized by the HLRS in order to give an overview of the scientific work carried out during the past year and to demonstrate the state of the art in the various fields. In 1998 the Land Baden-Wiirttemberg decided to extend the responsibilities of the Steering Committee of the HLRS and therewith also the rules of access to its Scientific Supercomputing Center (SSC) Karlsruhe. That center was recently upgraded with the IBM RS 6000 SP, thereby significantly increasing the attractivity of the two centers, since the joint portfolio of computer- architectures now covers most of the application-profile of their users.

An overview of recent developments in high performance computing and simulation, with special emphasis on the industrial relevance of the presented results and methods. The book showcases an innovative combination of the state-of-the-art modeling, novel numerical algorithms and the use of leading-edge high-performance computing systems.

For rather a long time numerical results in chemical kinetics could only be obtained for very simple chemical reactions, most of which were of minor practi ca 1 importance. The avail abil ity of fast computers has provi ded new opportunities for developments in chemical kinetics. Chemical systems of practical interest are usually very complicated. They consi st of a great number of different el ementary chemi cal reacti ons, mostly with rate constants differi ng by many orders of magni tude, frequently with surface reacti on steps and often wi th transport processes. The deri vati on of a 'true' chemical mechani sm can be extremely cumbersome. Mostly this work is done by setting up 'reaction models' which are im- proved step by step in comparison with precise experimental data. At this early stage mathematics is involved, which may al ready be rather complicated. Mathematical methods such as pertubation theory, graph theory, sensitivity analysis or numerical integration are necessary for the derivation and application of optimal chemical reaction models. Most theoretical work aimed at improving the mathematical methods was done on chemical reactions which mostly were of little practical im- portance. Chemi cal engi neers, who evi dently k now well how important the chemical model s and their dynamics are for reactor desi gn, have al so to be convinced not only on the theoretical work but also on its practical applic- abil ity.

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the work shop "Modelling of Patterns in Space and Time," organized by the 80nderforschungsbereich 123, "8tochastische Mathematische Modelle," in Heidelberg, July 4-8, 1983. The main aim of this workshop was to bring together physicists, chemists, biologists and mathematicians for an exchange of ideas and results in modelling patterns. Since the mathe matical problems arising depend only partially on the particular field of applications the interdisciplinary cooperation proved very useful. The workshop mainly treated phenomena showing spatial structures. The special areas covered were morphogenesis, growth in cell cultures, competition systems, structured populations, chemotaxis, chemical precipitation, space-time oscillations in chemical reactors, patterns in flames and fluids and mathematical methods. The discussions between experimentalists and theoreticians were especially interesting and effective. The editors hope that these proceedings reflect at least partially the atmosphere of this workshop. For the convenience of the reader, the papers are ordered alpha betically according to authors. However, the table of contents can easily be grouped into the main topics of the workshop. For practical reasons it was not possible to reproduce in colour the beautiful pictures of patterns shown at the workshop. Since a larger number of half-tone pictures could be included in this volume, the loss of information has, however, been kept to a minimum. The workshop has already stimulated cooperation between its parti cipants and this volume is intended to spread this effect."

Dramatische soziale Ereignisse wie das Ende der sozialistischen Staaten oder die Demontage des Wohlfahrtssystems decken grundlegende theoretische Defizite der gegenwartigen Soziologie des Wandels auf. Diesseits der besonders in der amerikanischen Debatte erhobenen Forderung nach einem konzeptionellen Neubeginn werden in dieser Studie aktuelle soziologische Gesellschaftstheorien daraufhin untersucht, was sie zum Abbau der Mangel soziologischer Analyse des Wandels beitragen konnen. Der Beutezug bei zeitgenossischen Titanen der Soziologie (Bourdieu, Giddens, Coleman, Munch, Habermas) steht unter der Leitfrage: Was leisten gegenwartige soziologische Theorien aus der Theorieperspektive des sozialen Wandels? Im Ergebnis lassen sich diese Theorien mit erheblichem konzeptionellen Gewinn auch als Theorien des sozialen Wandels lesen.
