Many imagine the settlement of the American West as signaled by the dust of the wagon train or the whistle of a locomotive. During the middle decades of the nineteenth century, though, the growth of Texas and points west centered on the seventy-mile water route between Galveston and Houston. This single vital link stood between the agricultural riches of the interior and the mercantile enterprises of the coast, with a round of operations that was as sophisticated and efficient as that of any large transport network today. At the same time, the packets on the overnight Houston-Galveston run earned a reputation as colorful as their Mississippi counterparts, complete with impromptu steamboat races, makeshift naval gunboats during the Civil War, professional gamblers and horrific accidents.

Patches is Dr. Kotina W. Hall s first children s book and one of her most prized accomplishments. Dr. Hall is the President and Founder of Partnership Success, Incorporated. She is most noted for her civic outreach and dedication to enriching the lives of children. Dr. Hall has received a number of leadership and academic honors and currently serves as a professor at Belhaven University. Hall conducts higher education and professional development workshops throughout the southeast. She is also a featured speaker. Dr. Hall lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband Jeffrey and is the mother to two bonus sons - Justin and Jordan - and daughter, Jekoti-Blake. Hall dedicates her book to her winsome daughter, Jekoti-Blake (J-Blake), who is also her source for the creation and life of the character, Patches. The Boundary Element Method sets out a simple, efficient and cost effective computational technique which provides numerical solutions -- for objects of any shape -- for a wide range of scientific and engineering problems. The Boundary Element Method provides a complete approach to formulating boundary integral equations for scientific and engineering problems and solving them numerically using an element approximation. Only a knowledge of elementary calculus is required, since the text begins by relating familiar differential equations to integral equations and then moves on to the simple solution of integral equations. From this starting point, the mathematics of formulation and numerical approximation are developed progressively with every mathematical step being provided. Particular attention is paid to the problem of accurate evaluation of singular integrands and to the use of increasing levels of accuracy provided by constant, linear and quadratic approximations. This enables a full solution to be given for both two dimensional and three dimensional potential problems and finally, for the two dimensional elastostatics problem. The Boundary Element Method develops the mathematics of the text progressively both within chapters and from chapter to chapter. This book examines water resource management in China's electric power sector and the implications for energy provision in the face of an emerging national water crisis and global climate change. Over 75% of China's current electricity comes from coal. Coal-fired power plants are reliant on water, with plants using significant volumes of water every year, yet water resources are unevenly distributed. In the face of serious environmental concerns and increasing electricity demand, this book examines the environmental impacts that coal power plants have on water resources and the impact water availability has on the electricity sector in a country with a significant number of water-scarce provinces and a large number of power plants located on inland waterways. It discusses the water impacts and constraints for transforming the electric power sector away from coal to renewable energy sources, such as hydropower and concentrated solar power. The book adopts a mix-method approach, combining a plant-level quantitative analysis on water impacts and dependencies in China's electricity sector and a qualitative analysis of relevant institutions in both sectors. By reviewing policy and institution cases in China's water and electricity sectors, the book provides important recommendations calling for coordinated institutions to shift away from the current paradigm where water and electricity are governed independently.
