Many imagine the settlement of the American West as signaled by the dust of the wagon train or the whistle of a locomotive. During the middle decades of the nineteenth century, though, the growth of Texas and points west centered on the seventy-mile water route between Galveston and Houston. This single vital link stood between the agricultural riches of the interior and the mercantile enterprises of the coast, with a round of operations that was as sophisticated and efficient as that of any large transport network today. At the same time, the packets on the overnight Houston-Galveston run earned a reputation as colorful as their Mississippi counterparts, complete with impromptu steamboat races, makeshift naval gunboats during the Civil War, professional gamblers and horrific accidents.

How John Hall's book is different from others

**John was diagnosed with Melanoma Cancer IV, had surgery to remove 10 metasticized tumors, but afterwards was informed by his Oncologist M.D. that there was little or no hope for recovery-- since Chemo and Radiation Therapy do not work on Melanoma, John felt like he was facing immediate death in the next few months. However under the guidance of a Holistic Nutritionist he was able to rebuild his Immune System. As a result, 2 years later, has conquered his cancer.

**As an ex Premedical student, John had studied Inorganic and Organic Chemistry so that he has been able to do research on the causes, preventions, and possible cures for cancers.

**John is currently a Family Therapist in Roseville, Ca, and for the past 30 years has counseled the emotional and psychological issues of his clients. He now also counsels cancer patients related to their emotional and relationship [email protected]

**His major goal is to help others build up their Immune System. He believes, from experience, cancer can be cured with proper nutrition. The book cover is a microscopic image of a neutrofilswallowing the anthrax bacteria, as the best proof of EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITION IN SCIENCETODAY(an example of how the human immune system's defenses are what prevent diseasesand cancers). Further explained in Chapter 3 of the book.

**The material he presents is brief, in summary form, and is easy to read. He makes suggestions of the best foods to eat, supplements, and healthy waters to consider.

**John learned doctors are not gods, don't have the answers to what cures cancers, and patients need to become aware that a healthy nutritional approach for their condition is a viable and doable program. He did it an won. He hopes you will too.

R613 Discovery Miles 6 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

United States Marine Corps veteran David Hall presents a new and exciting way to experience the Second World War in "Blood and Guts: Rules, Tactics, and Scenarios for Wargaming World War Two." Hall developed his tactical game system through decades of personal wargaming, and he now shares his unique system with readers everywhere. The rules are easy to learn, and the games are fast-paced. The scenarios cover almost all of the major theaters of conflict, including France 1940, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, and the Eastern Front. A table of organization and equipment is included to assist readers in recreating wargame infantry and armor formations. Hall doesn't simply provide a set of rules; he infuses each chapter with wargame theory, tactics, and tank development. He provides the logic behind each rule and talks about how the rule design plays out the battlefield. He also shares stories and anecdotes about his early "toy soldier" days and about how he developed into a wargamer-stories sure to spark readers' memories of their own first set of soldiers.

The Boundary Element Method (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): W. S. Hall The Boundary Element Method (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
W. S. Hall
R5,269 Discovery Miles 52 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Boundary Element Method sets out a simple, efficient and cost effective computational technique which provides numerical solutions -- for objects of any shape -- for a wide range of scientific and engineering problems. The Boundary Element Method provides a complete approach to formulating boundary integral equations for scientific and engineering problems and solving them numerically using an element approximation. Only a knowledge of elementary calculus is required, since the text begins by relating familiar differential equations to integral equations and then moves on to the simple solution of integral equations. From this starting point, the mathematics of formulation and numerical approximation are developed progressively with every mathematical step being provided. Particular attention is paid to the problem of accurate evaluation of singular integrands and to the use of increasing levels of accuracy provided by constant, linear and quadratic approximations. This enables a full solution to be given for both two dimensional and three dimensional potential problems and finally, for the two dimensional elastostatics problem. The Boundary Element Method develops the mathematics of the text progressively both within chapters and from chapter to chapter. It is a self-contained, step by step, exposition of the boundary element method, leading to its application to the key problem of elastostatics. The Boundary Element Method may be used as a standard introductory reference text for the mathematics of this method and is ideal for final year undergraduate study as well as for postgraduates, scientists and engineers new to the subject. Worked examples and exercises are providedthroughout the text.

Romantic Naturalists, Early Environmentalists - An Ecocritical Study, 1789-1912 (Hardcover, New Ed): Dewey W. Hall Romantic Naturalists, Early Environmentalists - An Ecocritical Study, 1789-1912 (Hardcover, New Ed)
Dewey W. Hall
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In his study of Romantic naturalists and early environmentalists, Dewey W. Hall asserts that William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson were transatlantic literary figures who were both influenced by the English naturalist Gilbert White. In Part 1, Hall examines evidence that as Romantic naturalists interested in meteorology, Wordsworth and Emerson engaged in proto-environmental activity that drew attention to the potential consequences of the locomotive's incursion into Windermere and Concord. In Part 2, Hall suggests that Wordsworth and Emerson shaped the early environmental movement through their work as poets-turned-naturalists, arguing that Wordsworth influenced Octavia Hill's contribution to the founding of the United Kingdom's National Trust in 1895, while Emerson inspired John Muir to spearhead the United States' National Parks movement in 1890. Hall's book traces the connection from White as a naturalist-turned-poet to Muir as the quintessential early environmental activist who camped in Yosemite with President Theodore Roosevelt. Throughout, Hall raises concerns about the growth of industrialization to make a persuasive case for literature's importance to the rise of environmentalism.

Examples and problems are given in both S.I. and Imperial units.

Water Management in China's Power Sector (Paperback): Xiawei Liao, Jim W. Hall Water Management in China's Power Sector (Paperback)
Xiawei Liao, Jim W. Hall
R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines water resource management in China's electric power sector and the implications for energy provision in the face of an emerging national water crisis and global climate change. Over 75% of China's current electricity comes from coal. Coal-fired power plants are reliant on water, with plants using significant volumes of water every year, yet water resources are unevenly distributed. In the face of serious environmental concerns and increasing electricity demand, this book examines the environmental impacts that coal power plants have on water resources and the impact water availability has on the electricity sector in a country with a significant number of water-scarce provinces and a large number of power plants located on inland waterways. It discusses the water impacts and constraints for transforming the electric power sector away from coal to renewable energy sources, such as hydropower and concentrated solar power. The book adopts a mix-method approach, combining a plant-level quantitative analysis on water impacts and dependencies in China's electricity sector and a qualitative analysis of relevant institutions in both sectors. By reviewing policy and institution cases in China's water and electricity sectors, the book provides important recommendations calling for coordinated institutions to shift away from the current paradigm where water and electricity are governed independently. Enriching the water-energy nexus literature, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars working on water resource management, energy industries and Chinese environmental policy, as well as policymakers and practitioners in those fields.

W S HALL School of Computing and Mathematics, University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, TS1 3BA UK G OLIVETO Division of Structural Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Catania, Viale A. Doria 6, 95125 Catania, Italy Soil-Structure Interaction is a challenging multidisciplinary subject which covers several areas of Civil Engineering. Virtually every construction is connected to the ground and the interaction between the artefact and the foundation medium may affect considerably both the superstructure and the foundation soil. The Soil-Structure Interaction problem has become an important feature of Structural Engineering with the advent of massive constructions on soft soils such as nuclear power plants, concrete and earth dams. Buildings, bridges, tunnels and underground structures may also require particular attention to be given to the problems of Soil-Structure Interaction. Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction is prominent in Earthquake Engineering problems. The complexity of the problem, due also to its multidisciplinary nature and to the fact of having to consider bounded and unbounded media of different mechanical characteristics, requires a numerical treatment for any application of engineering significance. The Boundary Element Method appears to be well suited to solve problems of Soil- Structure Interaction through its ability to discretize only the boundaries of complex and often unbounded geometries. Non-linear problems which often arise in Soil-Structure Interaction may also be treated advantageously by a judicious mix of Boundary and Finite Element discretizations.
