This important contribution to the issue of renewable energy describes the technical and economical requirements of mass-produced solar thermal power plants, from the different types of power plants to the development needs and a massive development program. The authors - renowned and experienced experts in the field - show that solar thermal power plants, because of their simple technology, are easy to build with high production rates and therefore can play a substantial role in the rapid substitution of fossil fuels. On the basis of solar thermal power (using long distance transmission) and coal from substituted coal plants, a future energy system is described supplying gas and liquid fuels. This is the first discussion of a complete concept, of a crash-strategy, for the partial replacement of oil and natural gas.

Vogel [Vogl], employed an algebraic approach to inter sections; although restricted to intersections in projective space it produced an intersection cycle by a simple and natural algorithm, thus leading to a Bezout theorem for improper intersections. It was developed together with J. Stiickrad and involved a refined version of the classical technique ofreduc tion to the diagonal: here one starts with the join variety and intersects with successive hyperplanes in general position, laying aside components which fall into the diagonal and intersecting the residual scheme with the next hyperplane; since all the hyperplanes intersect in the diagonal, the process terminates.

This volume contains most of the contributions presented at the conference "Mathematical Learning Models - Theory and Algorithms." The conference was organized by the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the University of Bonn under the auspices of the Sonderforschungs bereich 72. It took place in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef near to Bonn from May 3 - May 7, 1982. The idea of the organizers was to bring together experts who work on very related problems, but partially by using different approaches. The main subjects of the program were: - mathematical learning models, - bandit problems, - stochastic approximation procedures, - sequential decision processes with unknown law of nature. We felt that in a sense "learning" was a common concept for all these branches. In the contributions the state of the art in the above topics was presented from different pOints of view with special regard to recent advances. The exchange of results and opinions was continued in many fruitful and vivid discussions. The atmosphere of the conference center offered a suitable and pleasant framework for the scientific program. We express our gratitude to all contributors for making the con ference successful. Simultaneously we hope that further work on the above mentioned field has been stimulated."

This book, originally published in 1979, was derived from courses offered at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, Germany. The American Ceramic Society republished this text in 1985, adding more than 100 new figures and references to demonstrate recent advances in glass technology. This text represents a comprehensive presentation of the entire field of glass chemistry, especially emphasizing contributions from German pioneers Otto Schott and Ernst Abbe.

In der Reihe Praktikum der Genetik erschienen bisher Band 1, Bakterien-. Phagen- und MoZekuZargenetik. und Band 2, DrosophiZa-Genetik. Der 3. Band, Humangenetik, sollte eigentlich schon frtiher fertig gestellt sein, aber zwei Grtinde verhinderten das: Erstens konnten sich weder die Autoren noch der Herausgeber und Mit herausgeber aus der Ftille der alltaglichen Pflichten zurtick ziehen, urn sich nur dern Buch zu widrnen. Zweitens hatten aIle an dern Buch Beteiligten hochgesteckte Ziele, namlich die Human genetik in ihrer thematischen Vielfalt darzustellen; dement sprechend enthalt jetzt der vorliegende Band zytogenetische, biochemische, immunologische und rnolekularbiologische Ver suchsanleitungen. Ein kurzer Blick in einschlagige Zeitschriften lehrt uns, daB sich die Humangenetik in den letzten Jahren thematisch und methodisch sttirmisch entwickelt hat. Ftir die biologische Grund lagenforschung und die praktische Medizin, insbesondere die humangenetische Diagnostik und Beratung, hat diese Entwicklung auBerordentliche Bedeutung. Die Sandstrahlgeblase, welche in den beiden letzten Jahrzehnten des vorigen Jahrhunderts in Deutschland mehr und mehr eingefuhrt wurden, fanden zunachst nur zum Verzieren, Atzen und Mattmachen von Glas Verwendung. Bald zeigte sich aber, dass sie auch zu anderen Zwecken vorteilhaft verwendet werden konnteu. Infolgedessen eroberten sie sich immer neue Arbeitsgebiete in den verschiedensten Gewerben. Die technischen Vorzuge der Sandstrahlgeblase sind jetzt allgemein anerkannt, es hat sich aber auch herausgestellt, dass sie fur die Ge sundheit der daran tatigen Arbeiter recht bedenklich sein konnen. Ihre Wirkungsweise und die Art ihrer Verwendung bringt es mit sich, dass beim Arbeiten damit grosse Mengen von Staub entstehen, deren Einwirkung sich die Arbeiter ohne weiteres gar nicht entziehen kon nen. Der Staub besteht zum grossen Teil aus feinsten Trummern des Sandes, also aus reiner kristallinischer Kieselsaure. Er gehort daher zu den gefahrlichen Staubarten. Die schlimmen Wirkungen dieses Staubes werden durch die Abhandlung von Dr. med. Ern e s tin e Muller, "Pneumoconiose bei Arbeitern eines Sandgeblases," Zentral blatt fur Gewerbehygiene 1928, S. 148, eindringlich vor die Augen gefuhrt. Die Gewerbeaufsichtsbeamten haben auch schon bald nach der Einfuhrung der Sandstrahlgeblase die Gefahr erkannt, denen die Ar beiter dabei ausgesetzt sind, und nachdrucklich darauf hingewirkt, dass der Staub beseitigt wird oder die Arbeiter in anderer Weise ge schutzt wurden."

The primary purpose of Prophetic Liturgy is to inquire into the prophetic dimension of the liturgy. Some questions addressed in the book are: How can a liturgy be prophetic? How can liturgy form and transform individuals and communities? In which sense does the liturgy facilitate a living participation in socio-political-economic life?
