Dedicated to the memory of Wolfgang Classical Intersection Theory
(see for example Wei! [Wei]) treats the case of proper
intersections, where geometrical objects (usually subvarieties of a
non singular variety) intersect with the expected dimension. In
1984, two books appeared which surveyed and developed work by the
individual authors, co workers and others on a refined version of
Intersection Theory, treating the case of possibly improper
intersections, where the intersection could have ex cess dimension.
The first, by W. Fulton [Full] (recently revised in updated form),
used a geometrical theory of deformation to the normal cone, more
specifically, deformation to the normal bundle followed by moving
the zero section to make the intersection proper; this theory was
due to the author together with R. MacPherson and worked generally
for intersections on algeb raic manifolds. It represents nowadays
the standard approach to Intersection Theory. The second, by W.
Vogel [Vogl], employed an algebraic approach to inter sections;
although restricted to intersections in projective space it
produced an intersection cycle by a simple and natural algorithm,
thus leading to a Bezout theorem for improper intersections. It was
developed together with J. Stiickrad and involved a refined version
of the classical technique ofreduc tion to the diagonal: here one
starts with the join variety and intersects with successive
hyperplanes in general position, laying aside components which fall
into the diagonal and intersecting the residual scheme with the
next hyperplane; since all the hyperplanes intersect in the
diagonal, the process terminates.
This important contribution to the issue of renewable energy
describes the technical and economical requirements of
mass-produced solar thermal power plants, from the different types
of power plants to the development needs and a massive development
program. The authors - renowned and experienced experts in the
field - show that solar thermal power plants, because of their
simple technology, are easy to build with high production rates and
therefore can play a substantial role in the rapid substitution of
fossil fuels. On the basis of solar thermal power (using long
distance transmission) and coal from substituted coal plants, a
future energy system is described supplying gas and liquid fuels.
This is the first discussion of a complete concept, of a
crash-strategy, for the partial replacement of oil and natural gas.

This volume contains most of the contributions presented at the
conference "Mathematical Learning Models - Theory and Algorithms."
The conference was organized by the Institute of Applied
Mathematics of the University of Bonn under the auspices of the
Sonderforschungs bereich 72. It took place in the Physikzentrum in
Bad Honnef near to Bonn from May 3 - May 7, 1982. The idea of the
organizers was to bring together experts who work on very related
problems, but partially by using different approaches. The main
subjects of the program were: - mathematical learning models, -
bandit problems, - stochastic approximation procedures, -
sequential decision processes with unknown law of nature. We felt
that in a sense "learning" was a common concept for all these
branches. In the contributions the state of the art in the above
topics was presented from different pOints of view with special
regard to recent advances. The exchange of results and opinions was
continued in many fruitful and vivid discussions. The atmosphere of
the conference center offered a suitable and pleasant framework for
the scientific program. We express our gratitude to all
contributors for making the con ference successful. Simultaneously
we hope that further work on the above mentioned field has been
stimulated."
This book, originally published in 1979, was derived from courses
offered at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, Germany. The
American Ceramic Society republished this text in 1985, adding more
than 100 new figures and references to demonstrate recent advances
in glass technology. This text represents a comprehensive
presentation of the entire field of glass chemistry, especially
emphasizing contributions from German pioneers Otto Schott and
Ernst Abbe.

In der Reihe Praktikum der Genetik erschienen bisher Band 1,
Bakterien-. Phagen- und MoZekuZargenetik. und Band 2,
DrosophiZa-Genetik. Der 3. Band, Humangenetik, sollte eigentlich
Zweitens hatten
aIle an dern Buch Beteiligten hochgesteckte Ziele, namlich die
Human genetik in ihrer thematischen Vielfalt darzustellen; dement
sprechend enthalt jetzt der vorliegende Band zytogenetische,
biochemische, immunologische und rnolekularbiologische Ver
suchsanleitungen.
Entwicklung auBerordentliche Bedeutung.
ftir ihren aufopfernden Arbeitseinsatz herzlich gedankt. Ebenso

Gerbereiwissenschaft in allen seinen Teilen schopferisch-kritisch
Kieselsaure.
Sandgeblases," Zentral blatt fur Gewerbehygiene 1928, S. 148,
The primary purpose of Prophetic Liturgy is to inquire into the
prophetic dimension of the liturgy. Some questions addressed in the
book are: How can a liturgy be prophetic? How can liturgy form and
transform individuals and communities? In which sense does the
liturgy facilitate a living participation in
socio-political-economic life? How does the sacramental practice
challenge the church to mediate God's gifts of grace, love,
justice, and mercy to the world? Possible answers for these
questions begin to emerge as we develop an understanding of
religious praxis as an active and dynamic prophetic action, in
which the community of faith claims its identity, promotes an
engaged faithful Christian life, and affirms the sacramental life
of the church as a source of formation and inspiration for
prophetic praxis, mediating God's gift for the life of the world.
There is risk in presenting an option for prophetic praxis, in that
it may go beyond the comfort zone of a community and engender
spiritual and political alienation. The most challenging ethical
hope of this book is to provide the worshiping community with
prophetic awareness of socio-economic injustice, while at the same
time preserving the community's historical-cultural identity, its
religious values, and its sacramental spirituality. "In this
fascinating study, influenced by the work of Abraham Joshua
Heschel, Tercio B. Junker has given the church a life-saving gift.
Examining theological and social science contributions, Junker
astutely sets forth the basic elements of prophetic liturgy while
illustrating what the prophetic life looks like in the ministries
of Dom Helder Camara, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., and
Oscar Romero. This is an outstanding contribution to what . . . I
call ethical prophecy." --Rufus Burrow Jr., co-author of Daring to
Speak in God's Name "In a work marked by a passion for justice and
equality, and a compassionate engagement with human and ecological
needs, Junker demonstrates an intrinsic connection between the
power and beauty of sacrament, song, and preaching on the one hand,
and the need for liberation, or world transformation on the other.
It would be hard to think of a more encompassing treatment of the
relevance of biblically shaped ritual (broadly speaking) to a world
that is inevitably shaped by social and economic forces." --Frank
Burch Brown, Christian Theological Seminary "Tercio Junker's
Prophetic Liturgy is a liturgical theology for the 99 percent,
showing us how Christian worship both envisions a transformed world
and gives us the means by which to participate in that
transformation. While wide-ranging in his approach, Junker remains
true to his own Methodist heritage, demonstrating not only how
Christian worship can lead Christian communities to social holiness
but why it must do so." --E. Byron Anderson, Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary "In Prophetic Liturgy, Tercio Junker shows
that liturgy, sacraments, and social witness are (or should be)
inseparably related and grounded in the graciousness of God.
Prophetic Liturgy attends to the wellbeing of every human, enabling
Christians to speak and act effectively on behalf of justice in the
world. This remarkable book never scolds or accuses, but envisions
the joy of life in covenant with God, engaged in loving actions,
and seeking God's new heaven and earth." --Ruth Duck,
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary Tercio Bretanha Junker is
Assistant Professor of Worship and Director of the Sweeney Chapel
of Christian Theological Seminary at Indianapolis.
The voices of liturgical theology in the twentieth century are many
and varied. Primary Sources of Liturgical Theology brings together
in one volume the representative writings of scholars throughout
the Euro-North American context whose insights have shaped our
understanding of liturgy today. The selections in Primary Sources
of Liturgical Theology are arranged around nine seminal questions
which students of liturgical theology need to engage. Each
selection is introduced and contextualized by another liturgical
theologian. Through this first-hand encounter with primary sources
readers will develop a sense of the broad range of writings
available to them. Chapters are What Is Liturgical Theology?" "What
Is Liturgy?" "How Can We 'Do' Liturgical Theology?" "How Are
Theology and Liturgy Related?" "How Does Liturgy Embody Theological
Themes?" "What Is the Theological Function of Liturgical Language
and Ritual?" "What Is the Role of the Word in Liturgy?" "How Do
Liturgical Theologians Engage Cultural Diversity?" "How Are Liturgy
and Life Related?" Includes an alphabetical list of primary
contributors and a chronological index of major entries by date of
original publication. Contributors to Primary Sources of Liturgical
Theology are Peter Brunner; Odo Casel, O.S.B.; Louis-Marie Chauvet;
