Rainy Street Stories is a composition of powerful reflections on
today's espionage, terrorism, and secret wars. These stories,
essays, and poems by John Davis, himself a retired intelligence
officer, take place from Europe, to Asia, and back to the Americas.
He lived overseas for many years, where he served as a soldier,
civil servant, and gifted linguist. Davis writes with a thoughtful,
compassionate, and fair assessment of his lifetime lived during
wars and conflicts which were his generation's legacy from World
War II. He recounts mysterious, sometimes strangely suggestive,
even curiously puzzling tales. Each will cause the reader to think.
Davis draws from actual encounters in unusual circumstances, in
conversations at utterly unexpected times, and chance meetings,
historical site visits, or his readings to illustrate his
reflections. Moreover, he is influenced by carefully listening to
others who experienced history, from careful study of human nature,
observation of international events, but also by remaining open to
surprises, the better to distill the essence of a hidden truth.
Those people about whom he speculates, events he interprets,
motives he muses about, or wonders he reveals will remain with you
for a long time. These are not writings to be read in a night, but
to be reflected upon over the coming years.
It has been said that never has a monarch so narrowly missed
"greatness" as did the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II. An idealistic,
sincere, and hardworking monarch whose ultilitarian bent,
humanitarian instincts, and ambitious programs of reform in every
area of public concern have prompted historians to term him an
"enlightened despot," "revolutionary Emperor," "philosopher on a
throne," and a ruler ahead of his time, Joseph has also been
condemned for being insensitive to the phobias and follies of his
subjects, essentially unrealistic, almost utopian, in establishing
his goals, and dogmatic and overly precipitous in trying to achieve
them. Efforts to analyze and explain the actions of this complex
and controversial personality have involved a number of savants in
investigations of "Josephinism" (or as I prefer to call it,
"Josephism"), dealing in great detail with the motiva tions,
substance, and influence of his innovations. The roots of Josephism
run deep, but can be observed emerging here and there from the
intellectual and political soil that nourished them, before joining
the central trunk of the system formulated during the latter years
of Maria Theresa's reign to grow to an ephemeral and stunted
maturity under Joseph II."
The Codes of Hammurabi and Moses are thousands-years old documents,
evidence of the social structure and rules of ancient
civilizations. The Code of Hammurabi is roughly one thousand years
older than the Ten Commandments, or Laws of Moses, which were
written in 1500 B.C., and is considered the oldest set of laws in
existence. Promulgated by the king Hammurabi in roughly 2250 B.C.,
the Code is a set of rules guiding everyday life, listing
everything from punishments for stealing and murder to the prices
commanded for animals, products, and services. The famous "eye for
an eye" maxim comes from the Hammurabi code: "If a man puts out the
eye of an equal, his eye shall be put out." W.W. Davies'
translation of The Codes of Hammurabi and Moses includes an
explanation of the laws and their history, a Prologue by the
author, the text of the codes with comments, an Epilogue, and a
detailed Index. W.W. DAVIES was one of several translators of the
famous Code of Hammurabi and the Law of Moses. Little to no
information is known about him other than his work with the ancient
text. A professor of Hebrew at Ohio Wesleyan University, Davies's
translation was from 1905, published by Jennings and Graham in
Cincinnati, Ohio.
The discovery of the Hammurabi Code is one of the greatest
achievements of archaeology, and is of paramount interest, not only
to the student of the Bible, but also to all those interested in
ancient history.
