In the first years after the discovery of radioactivity it became clear that nuclear physics was, by excellence, the science of small quantum systems. Between the fifties and the eighties nuclear physics and elementary particles physics lived their own lives, without much interaction. During this period the basic concepts were defined. Recently, contrary to the specialization law often observed in science, the overlap between nuclear and elementary particle physics has become somewhat blurred.
Between the years 1630-1668, the French gem merchant, Jean Baptiste Tavernier made six voyages to Persia and India. His true exploits by land and sea go far beyond the ink and paper exploits of fictional adventurers. Tavernier met and did business with some of the world's most powerful princes and romanced some of the most beautiful women. Sometime during his later voyages, Tavernier acquired a magnificent 116 carat blue diamond. Upon his return to France, he sold the diamond to Louis XIV, for the equivalent of 147 kilos of pure gold. The Sun King made him Baron of Aubonne. The remains of Tavernier's blue gem is known today as the Hope Diamond, but for the first 200 years of its history it was called simply The French Blue.

Friedrich Nietzsche said "A man does not have to be an angel in order to be a saint." This proves true for a group of everyday people whose paths cross struggling to survive in the Motor City. Vigilante justice, murder and faith all become moral issues for these so-called saints when the line between right and wrong is continually in question.
Marine Sediments from an offshore rise along the Northeastern South America are dated to determine when and how the margin has eroded through time. Unique results have provided insight for when margin destruction occured and the mechanisms by which continental slopes are eroded in this region. The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Cruise 207 to the Demerara Rise recovered hundreds of meters of core from 1900 to 3200 m depth from an offshore rise along the Suriname and French Guyana coasts. These efforts produced excellent examples of sediment failures such as Oligocene slumps and Miocene debris flows. These deposits occured as a series of events and provide an excellent context for evaluating the mechanisms and triggers that contribute to submarine mass wasting. More importantly, this study is a case example of how continental margins erode down and build out through time.
The geneses of stories are as infinite as the chambers of the heart. Some come from the light, others from the shadows, and when from the shadows, the teller is exposed--stripped naked and vulnerable before the eyes of the reader. A fair question for the teller: Why expose yourself? The only answer that I know of is that a purging is sought, though the cruel end is that it will never be fully attained.
For the small Midwestern town of California, Missouri, 1968 heralded another year when parents stared in dread at television screens sending images of soldiers mangled in Vietnam. Ernie and Christa Bates performed their daily toils, but never far from their thoughts was an only son named Aaron. The young man shared a strong Christian faith with his mother, and she prayed for him fervently, knowing that his prayers too were directed to God. But Ernie did not share their faith, could only invoke a spirit world that he knew existed, but did not trust. And while his son fought on soil half a world away, Ernie fought a grim battle in a world that he could not see.
