"Esteemed for providing the best available translations, Philosophic Classics: Ancient Philosophy, features complete works or complete sections of the most important works by the major thinkers, as well as shorter samples from transitional thinkers." First published in 1961, Forrest E. Baird's revision of "Philosophic Classics, "Pearson Education's long-standing anthology (available in split volumes), continues the tradition of providing generations of students with high quality course material. Using the complete works, or where appropriate, complete sections of works, this anthology allows philosophers to speak directly to students. Advances in Acoustic Microscopy - Volume 2 (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Andrew Briggs, Walter Arnold Advances in Acoustic Microscopy - Volume 2 (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Andrew Briggs, Walter Arnold
R5,466 Discovery Miles 54 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the second volume of Advances in Acoustic Microscopy. It continues the aim of presenting applications and developments of techniques that are related to high-resolution acoustic imaging. We are very grateful to the authors who have devoted considerable time to preparing these chapters, each of which describes a field of growing importance. Laboratories that have high-performance acoustic microscopes are frequently asked to examine samples for which the highest available resolution is not necessary, and the ability to penetrate opaque layers is more significant. Such applications can be thought of as bridging the gap be tween acoustic microscopy at low gigahertz frequencies, and on the one hand nondestructive testing of materials at low megahertz frequencies and on the other hand medical ultrasonic imaging at low megahertz frequencies. Commercial acoustic microscopes are becoming increasingly available and popular for such applications. We are therefore delighted to be able to begin the volume with chapters from each of those two fields. The first chapter, by Gabriele Pfannschmidt, describes uses of acoustic microscopy in the semiconductor industry. It provides a splendid balance to the opening chapter of Volume 1, which came from a national research center, being written from within a major European electronics industry itself. Dr Pfann schmidt describes the use of two quite different types of acoustic microscopes, and points out the advantages of each for specific purposes.

Living in a Seasonal World - Thermoregulatory and Metabolic Adaptations (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Thomas Ruf, Claudia Bieber,... Living in a Seasonal World - Thermoregulatory and Metabolic Adaptations (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Thomas Ruf, Claudia Bieber, Walter Arnold, Eva Millesi
R5,511 Discovery Miles 55 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book summarises the newest information on seasonal adaptation in animals. Topics include animal hibernation, daily torpor, thermoregulation, heat production, metabolic depression, biochemical adaptations, neurophysiology and energy balance. The contributors to this book present interdisciplinary research at multiple levels ranging from the molecular to the ecophysiological, as well as evolutionary approaches. The chapters of this book provide original data not published elsewhere, which makes it the most up-to-date, comprehensive source of information on these fields.

The book s subchapters correspond to presentations given at the 14th International Hibernation Symposium in August 2012 in Austria. This is a very successful series of symposia (held every four years since 1959) that attracts leading researchers in the field. Like the past symposia, this meeting and consequently the book is aimed not only at hibernation but at covering the full range of animal adaptations to seasonal environments. For the next four years, this book will serve as the cutting-edge reference work for graduate students and scientists active in this field of physiology and ecology.."

Acoustical Imaging (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004): Walter Arnold, Sigrun Hirsekorn Acoustical Imaging (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004)
Walter Arnold, Sigrun Hirsekorn
R5,631 Discovery Miles 56 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Acoustical imaging has become an indispensable tool in a variety of fields. Since its introduction, the applications have grown and cover a variety of techniques, producing significant results in fields as disparate as medicine and seismology. Cutting-edge trends continue to be discussed worldwide.

This book contains the proceedings of the 27th International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging (AI27), which took place in Saarbrucken, Germany, from March 24th to March 27th 2003. The Symposium belongs to a conference series in existence since 1968. AI27 comprised sessions on:

  • Medical Imaging,
  • Non-Destructive Testing,
  • Seismic Imaging,
  • Physics and Mathematics of Acoustical Imaging,
  • Acoustic Microscopy.

During two well-attended workshops the applications of quantitative acoustical imaging in biology and medical applications, and in near-field imaging of materials, were discussed. Based on its cross-disciplinary aspects, the authors of the papers of AI27 present experiments, theory and construction of new instruments.

Audience: This volume will be of interest to engineers and researchers of all levels in the field, in industry or academia, and for those newcomers who want to get acquainted with the state-of-the-art in acoustical imaging. "
