Here are the vanished days of the unfettered Sultanate in all their dark, melodramatic splendor-a mingling of magnificence with squalor, culture with barbarism, refined cruelty with nave humor. Until 1912 Morocco never suffered foreign domination, and its mountainous interior was as closed to foreigners as Tibet. Walter Harris (1866-1933), though, was the exception. He first visited in 1887 and lived in the country for more than thirty-five years, and as the Times correspondent had observed every aspect of its life. He was an intimate of at least three of the ruling Sultans (as well as King Edward VII) and a man capable even of befriending his kidnapper. It was said that only three Christians had ever visited the walled city of Chechaouen: one was poisoned, one came for an hour disguised as a rabbi, and the other was Harris. Originally published in 1921, Morocco That Was is alternately sharp, melodramatic, and extremely funny.

The author of 'A Journey Through Yemen' ends his narrative thus: 'My recollections of the country are ones that I shall always treasure, in spite of the dangers and sickness, in spite of long marches and days in prison, the Yemen will always be for me, Arabia Felix.' First published in 1893, the work appeared at a critical time in the turbulent history of the Yemen. Already the Turkish Empire had seized much of the country in an attempt to re-establish control over the seaway routes leading to the Suez Canal. Rebellion by the native population against the Turks reached its peak in the late nineteenth century and an important chapter in this work provides a contemporary account of the effects of this conflict. In contrast, the second part of the work contains a thrilling narrative of the author's travels in the Yemen, and, his adventures there, described together with vivid portraits of the places he visits and the people he meets. The book first appeared, in part, in the widely-read Victorian journal, the 'Illustrated London News', from which many of the evocative illustrations are also taken.

This is a rare English account of an important but largely forgotten 20th century colonial conflict: the Rif War in which Spain, and to a lesser extent France, battled a persistent rebellion in their Moroccan colonies in the 1920s by Berber tribesmen under their charismatic leader Abdel Krim. Centred on the Rif mountains of northern Morocco, the rebellion featured ground breaking guerilla warfare in which the Rif rebels turned captured weapons on their colonial masters. As author Walter Harris observes, the war was a cruel conflict, featuring atrocities on both sides, and it prefigured many anti-colonial conflicts of the post World War Two period. The war also brought to prominence Francisco Franco, the future dictator of Spain, who became Spain's youngest General during the fighting. Krim himself after surrendering, was forcibly exiled by France and never returned to his homeland before his death in 1963. However, his rebellion influenced other 20th century guerilla leaders including Giap, Guevara and Castro.
