Approximation and Computation - In Honor of Gradimir V. Milovanovic (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Walter Gautschi, Giuseppe... Approximation and Computation - In Honor of Gradimir V. Milovanovic (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Walter Gautschi, Giuseppe Mastroianni, Themistocles M. Rassias
R2,735 Discovery Miles 27 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Approximation theory and numerical analysis are central to the creation of accurate computer simulations and mathematical models. Research in these areas can influence the computational techniques used in a variety of mathematical and computational sciences.

This collection of contributed chapters, dedicated to renowned mathematician Gradimir V. Milovanovi, represent the recent work of experts in the fields of approximation theory and numerical analysis. These invited contributions describe new trends in these important areas of research including theoretic developments, new computational algorithms, and multidisciplinary applications.

Special features of this volume:

- Presents results and approximation methods in various computational settings including: polynomial and orthogonal systems, analytic functions, and differential equations.

- Provides a historical overview of approximation theory and many of its subdisciplines;

- Contains new results from diverse areas of research spanning mathematics, engineering, and the computational sciences.

"Approximation and Computation" is intended for mathematicians and researchers focusing on approximation theory and numerical analysis, but can also be a valuable resource to students and researchers in the computational and applied sciences."

Leonhard Euler (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Emil A. Fellmann Leonhard Euler (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Emil A. Fellmann; Translated by E. Gautschi, Walter Gautschi
R1,507 Discovery Miles 15 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Euler was not only by far the most productive mathematician in the history of mankind, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time. He attained, like only a few scholars, a degree of popularity and fame which may well be compared with that of Galilei, Newton, or Einstein.

Moreover he was a cosmopolitan in the truest sense of the word; he lived during his first twenty years in Basel, was active altogether for more than thirty years in Petersburg and for a quarter of a century in Berlin.

Leonhard Euler's unusually rich life and broadly diversified activity in the immediate vicinity of important personalities which have made history, may well justify an exposition.

This book is based in part on unpublished sources and comes right out of the current research on Euler. It is entirely free of formulae as it has been written for a broad audience with interests in the history of culture and science.

Numerical Analysis (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2012): Walter Gautschi Numerical Analysis (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2012)
Walter Gautschi
R3,219 Discovery Miles 32 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Revised andupdated, this second edition of Walter Gautschi's successful "Numerical Analysis"explorescomputational methodsfor problems arising in the areas of classical analysis, approximation theory, and ordinary differential equations, among others. Topics included in the book are presented with a view toward stressing basic principles and maintaining simplicity and teachability as far as possible, while subjects requiring a higher level of technicality are referenced in detailed bibliographic notes at the end of each chapter. Readers are thus given the guidance and opportunity to pursue advanced modern topics in more depth.

Along with updated references, new biographical notes, and enhanced notational clarity, this second editionincludes the expansion of an alreadylarge collection of exercises and assignments, both the kind that deal with theoretical and practical aspects of the subject and those requiring machine computation and the use of mathematical software. Perhaps most notably, the edition also comes with a complete solutions manual, carefully developed and polished by the author, which will serve as an exceptionally valuable resource for instructors."

Orthogonal Polynomials - Computation and Approximation (Hardcover): Walter Gautschi Orthogonal Polynomials - Computation and Approximation (Hardcover)
Walter Gautschi
R4,757 Discovery Miles 47 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first book on constructive methods for, and applications of orthogonal polynomials, and the first available collection of relevant Matlab codes. The book begins with a concise introduction to the theory of polynomials orthogonal on the real line (or a portion thereof), relative to a positive measure of integration. Topics which are particularly relevant to computation are emphasized. The second chapter develops computational methods for generating the coefficients in the basic three-term recurrence relation. The methods are of two kinds: moment-based methods and discretization methods. The former are provided with a detailed sensitivity analysis. Other topics addressed concern Cauchy integrals of orthogonal polynomials and their computation, a new discussion of modification algorithms, and the generation of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. The final chapter deals with selected applications: the numerical evaluation of integrals, especially by Gauss-type quadrature methods, polynomial least squares approximation, moment-preserving spline approximation, and the summation of slowly convergent series. Detailed historic and bibliographic notes are appended to each chapter. The book will be of interest not only to mathematicians and numerical analysts, but also to a wide clientele of scientists and engineers who perceive a need for applying orthogonal polynomials.
