HAVRE TO PARIS 131 Miles If the motorist has shipped his car ahead
and consigned it to either of the express companies he should find
everything in readiness to leave Havre shortly after his arrival.
There are delays sometimes because of the owner's carelessness. On
one occasion, although my car was sent on a cargo steamer a week
before I sailed myself, it had not been passed through the custom
house because I forgot to send the keys. Without the keys the
officials could not open the tool box nor the empty suit case
trunk. What they expected to find in either, I never knew. Havre is
the second sea port of France and is essentially a commercial city.
It is given scant attention by tourists, who usually arrive by the
channel boats or the steamers of the French Line Havbe ? Hotel

here, he will find Havre and its environs not uninteresting. Back
of the city is the Cote d'Ingouville reached by a cable railway
from the rue Giistave Flaubert. A stunning view is disclosed from
the hill top, with the town at one's feet and the busy harbour
beyond. An elaborate system of docks has helped to give Havre its
maritime importance and a half hour can be spent profitably in
watching one of the big transatlantic steamers being manoeuvred
through the locks and basins. There is excellent sea bathing at
Ste. Addresse and a climb up the chalk cliffs to the light houses
