A Syrian poet noted that, "The world holds two classes of men -
intelligent men without religion and religious men without
intelligence." A Nobel Prize winning physicist, Dr. Steven Weinberg
said, "Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it
you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing
evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes
religion." Could they both be right? Or is it possible that we
could have a Christianity that is intelligible, believable, and
credible? In order for that to be true we would need to rescue our
traditional notions and practice of the Christian faith from its
ancient, fraudulent time warp. We need to help it remove itself
from the cultural trance in which it exists, and the faulty beliefs
which it holds. We continue to survive on and promote an ancient,
discredited history of Jesus and the Church. The secular and
Biblical Scholarship of the last 200 years has been largely ignored
in today's Christian beliefs and practices. What we have today in
Christianity is a distorted, disfigured and fraudulent hero of the
Christian faith. We have numbed and parked our mental faculties
regarding the historic knowledge of our religion, and the truthful,
accurate, and proper exercise or practice of our religion. A
Credible Christianity provides you with the best and latest
scholarship, behavioral research, and psychological insight.
Galileo, a hero of the Renaissance who was accused of sacrilege in
his day said, "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God
who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended
us to forego their use."
In a recent study reported by the Associated Press, the American
Religious Identification Survey concluded that, the percentage of
Christians in America had declined. It went on further to report
that more people say that they have no religion at all.
Approximately 30o% of married couples did not have a religious
ceremony. About 27% of those polled said that they did not want a
religious funeral. Why is this true? Increasingly, people feel the
need to make a decision. They must decide between, accepting and
becoming a Biblical literalist or, embracing the known, verifiable
realities about the world in which they live. This choice is
confusing, and it creates a state of cognitive dissonance that
becomes intolerable for most people. Having to accept a Bible that
is unbelievable, that is filled with pre-modern, unacceptable
notions, and even noxious declarations, is a turnoff to people in
an educated culture. Having to believe in an indefinable, punitive,
and capricious God as promoted in religion, is a difficult and
repulsive pill for most people to swallow. In "A Believable Bible"
you are provided with a guidebook for understanding and making
sense of the book of faith that is the basic document of, and that
is responsible for the Christian faith in America. You will be
surprised to discover that the Bible may not be what you have been
led to believe. Incorporating the best of recent biblical
scholarship and psychological insight, Dr. Kania takes you on a
fascinating journey of discovery and new truth, much as he did in
his prior book, "Healthy Religion."
Dr. Jacob Bronowski, in his book and PBS documentary series
entitled "The Ascent of Man" spoke of unhealthy religion when he
stood before the ashes of his relatives at the Auschwitz
crematorium. He said, "This is how men behave when they believe
they have absolute knowledge." People seek simple answers and
absolute knowledge, but anyone or any religion that claims absolute
knowledge or absolute and infallible religious sources and tells
people what to think, is a clear carrier and manifestation of
unhealthy religion. Is "Healthy Religion" an oxymoron or is it
achievable in one's life? This research-based document provides you
with the means for identifying what is healthy and what is
unhealthy in religion. You may be surprised to discover that what
you believe and the manner in which you practice your religion may
be more a function of your personality than of your religion in the
way in which your personality attaches itself and expresses itself
in your religion. Literal, dogmatic religious postures of
fundamental and evangelical groups are manifestations of
close-minded authoritarianism. They also reflect militant, and
extremist dictates for one to follow. The manipulation and
mind-control methods of fear, guilt, and shame, used with people to
secure membership and provide group consensus in belief, violate
the very essence of religion and the basic foundations of what is
"Healthy Religion." Certain attributes of healthy personality
produce healthy religion, and healthy religion promotes healthy
personality. You will uncover the ingredients and characteristics
of both in this book
