Principles of Government and Politics in the Middle Ages (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback): Walter Ullmann Principles of Government and Politics in the Middle Ages (Routledge Revivals) (Paperback)
Walter Ullmann
R1,341 Discovery Miles 13 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In many respects this book, first published in 1961, marked a somewhat radical departure from contemporary historical writings. It is neither a constitutional nor a political history, but a historical definition and explanation of the main features which characterised the three kinds of government which can be discerned in the Middle Ages ? government by the Pope, the King, the People. The author's enviable knowledge of the sources ? clerical, secular, legal, constitutional, liturgical, literary ? as well as of modern literature enables him to demonstrate the principles upon which the papal government, the royal government, and the government of the people rested. He shows how the traditional theocratic forms of government came to be supplanted by forms of government based on the will of the people. Although concerned with the Middle Ages, the book also contains much that is of topical interest to the discerning student of modern institutions. Medieval history is made understandable to modern man by modern methods.

Walter Ullmann
R7,305 Discovery Miles 73 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Upon its original publication in 1946, this work represented a new approach to medieval studies, offering indispensable analysis to the historian of legal, political and social ideas. Research into the original sources leads the author through unexplored realms of medieval thought. By contrasting contemporary opinions with those of his central figure, Lucas de Penna, he comprehensively presents the medieval idea of law a " then regarded as the concrete manifestation of abstract justice. The intensity of medieval academic life is revealed in the heated controversies, whilst medieval criminology foreshadows modern developments. A significant discovery is the astonishingly great reliance which Continental scholars placed upon English thought. A challenge to certain current misconceptions, this book shows the resourcefulness of medieval thinking and the extent to which modern ideas were foreshadowed in the fourteenth century, a time when the ideas of law and liberty were identical.

The Carolingian Renaissance and the Idea of Kingship (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Walter Ullmann The Carolingian Renaissance and the Idea of Kingship (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Walter Ullmann
R4,166 Discovery Miles 41 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In his Birkbeck Lectures, first published in 1969, Professor Ullmann throws new light on a familiar subject. He shows that the Carolingian renaissance had a wider and deeper meaning than has often been thought, especially in its political and ideological aspects. Displaying his mastery of both primary and secondary sources, Professor Ullmann presents an integrated history. He shows an epoch which holds a key to the better understanding not only of the subsequent medieval centuries, but also of modern Europe. This book opened new vistas in political, ideological and social history as well as in historical theology and jurisprudence and showed how relevant knowledge of the past is for the understanding of the present.

Walter Ullmann; Introduction by Goerge Garnett
R1,127 Discovery Miles 11 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This classic text outlines the development of the papacy as an institution in the Middle Ages. With profound knowledge, insight and sophistication, Walter Ullmann traces the course of papal history from the late Roman Empire to its eventual decline in the Renaissance.
The focus of this survey is on the institution and the idea of papacy rather than individual figures, recognizing the shaping power of the popes' roles that made them outstanding personalities. The transpersonal idea, Ullmann argues, sprang from Christianity itself and led to the papacy as an institution sui generis.

Law and Jurisdiction in the Middle Ages (Hardcover, New Ed): Walter Ullmann, George Garnett Law and Jurisdiction in the Middle Ages (Hardcover, New Ed)
Walter Ullmann, George Garnett
R3,904 Discovery Miles 39 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Walter Ullmann's contribution to the study of medieval political and legal thought needs no emphasis. In the present volume are collected a number of the early articles which it was not possible to include in his previous collections, together with others published since those volumes appeared. The articles display a striking consistency of approach, though in the more than forty years separating the earliest from the latest there is an obvious development in his thought. Ullman held the view that the law must be studied in its own historical context, as a function of society and a product of the factors which shaped social life; equally, he stressed the central position of the law in the study of medieval history, for its precise character meant that it could provide a more reliable probe into medieval beliefs and doctrine than any other form of evidence.

Law and Politics in Middle Ages (Paperback, Revised): Walter Ullmann Law and Politics in Middle Ages (Paperback, Revised)
Walter Ullmann
R1,165 Discovery Miles 11 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The purpose of this book is to put before the student of politics and the general reader an overall conspectus of the sources from which political ideas took their origin. The author, who is an acknowledged international authority on the subject and who over many years of intensive research has acquired an intimate familiarity with the material, makes his specialised knowledge available to the non-specialist. The book traverses ground that is virtually uncultivated, and it does so in an exciting way - by taking the reader into the chanceries of governments, of public organs and functionaries, and into the lecture halls of the great scholars in the universities. It shows upon what presuppositions publicists, litterateurs, government advisers, scholars and learned writers have proceeded to arrive at their political views. This variegated mass of material is here comprehensively presented.

The Individual and Society in the Middle Ages (Paperback): Walter Ullmann The Individual and Society in the Middle Ages (Paperback)
Walter Ullmann
R718 Discovery Miles 7 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1966. The Individual and Society in the Middle Ages, based on three guest lectures given at Johns Hopkins University in 1965, explores the place of the individual in medieval European society. Looking at legal sources and political ideology of the era, Ullmann concludes that, for most of the Middle Ages, the individual was defined as a subject rather than a citizen, but the modern concept of citizenship gradually supplanted the subject model from the late Middle Ages onward. Ullmann lays out the theological basis of the political theory that cast the medieval individual as an inferior, abstract subject. The individual citizen who emerged during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, by contrast, was an autonomous participant in affairs of state. Several intellectual trends made this humanistic conception of the individual possible, among them the rehabilitation of vernacular writing during the thirteenth century and the growing interest in nature, natural philosophy, and natural law. However, Ullmann points to feudalism as the single most important medieval institution that laid the groundwork for the emergence of the modern citizen.

This text represents a sort of customary or ordinal for the English court chapel in 1449, intended to govern the life of the 49 people, including choirboys, who were the staff of this peripatetic establishment. It was based on earlier drafts, and was sent to Alvaro Vaz d'Almada, a knight of the Garter, for the use of Afonso V of Portugal; it includes a copy of the English coronation rites.
