Die letzten Jahrzehnte haben uns im Kampfe gegen schwerste Infektions krankheiten durch die Sulfonamide, durch die Antibiotica, insbesondere das Penicillin, in der Behandlung lebenl>bedrohender Ausfallserscheinungen durch Insulin, durch die Lebertherapie Moeglichkeiten der Behandlung und Heilung gebracht, die noch kurze Zeit vorher undenkbar waren. Ehedem mit Sicherheit toedlich endende Krankheiten wie die Biermersche Anamie, verbreitete ansteckende unter Umstanden zu Epidemien anwachsende Krankheiten haben fast voellig ihren Schrecken verloren; diese Fortschritte sind in der Hautpsache der neuzeit lichen Entwicklung der Chemotherapie zu verdanken. Davon hat aber ein grosses fur die Gesundheit und Arbeitskraft der Voelker von jeher entscheidendes Gebiet keinen Nutzen gewonnen: die chronischen Erkran kungen, die Ertuchtigung der Jugend, die Bekampfung der pramorbiden Zustande, der vorzeitige Altersknick. Schauen wir aus nach erfolgversprechenden Behand lungsmethoden .auf diesem wichtigen Gebiet, so stehen in ungeschmalerter Bedeutung Balneotherapie, Klimatherapie und physikalische Therapie vor uns.

Die hier gebrachten Darlegungen sollen Rechenschaft ablegen von dem Ver such, in einem heilklimatischen Kurort des deutschen Mittelgebirges ein groBes Krankheitsgut nach einheitlichen Gesichtspunkten arztlich und bioklimatisch zu studieren. Uber diese klinisch-klimatische Beobachtung am kranken Menschen hinaus ergab die arztliche Gemeinschaftsarbeit mit del' Meteorologie, wie sie hier in diesel' Form wohl erstmalig durchgefiihrt wurde, manche neue Fragestellungen und Ergebnisse, die nicht nur mit zum Aufbau einer bisher noch kaum bearbei teten Mittelgebirgsphysioklimatik dienen k6nnen, sondeI'll VOl' aHem auch die praktische Heilkunde f6rdern sollen. Wie kaum ein anderes Forschungsgebiet ist die Bioklimatik von zahlreichen, oft schwer entwirrbaren Einzelfaktoren mit komplexer Wirkung abhangig. Es ergibt sich daraus die groBe Schwierigkeit jeder heilklimatischen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit. So bin ich mil' auch daruber vollkommen im klaren, daB manche meiner Untersuchungen und Beobachtungen nul' als ein Versuch aufzufassen sind, iiberhaupt einmal den Problemen sich zu nahern. Die seit langem vorbereitete Arbeit wurde mitten im groBen Ringen um das Schicksal Deutschlands zu dem hier vorliegenden vorlaufigen AbschluB gebracht.
