The past few years have seen the attention and rapid developments in event-triggered sampled-data systems, in which the effect of event-triggered sensor measurements and controller updates is explored in controller analysis and design. This book offers the first systematic treatment of event-triggered sampled-data control system design using active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), an effective approach that is popular in both theoretic research and industrial applications. Extensive application examples with numerous illustrations are included to show how the event-triggered ADRC with theoretic performance guarantees can be implemented in engineering systems and how the performance can be actually achieved. Poor penetration is the most common hurdle to translating a promising experimental therapy that uses invasive delivery methods to a clinically useful application. In the last 10 years, intranasal delivery of various therapeutic compounds including small chemicals, large proteins, and even stem cells has proven to be very effective in bypassing the blood-brain-barrier and has led to some important advances in translational research for stroke and other neurological diseases. China is the third largest nation with the largest population in the world. Shanghai, the largest city in China and a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world, is therefore a most appropriate location to host this conference. WAIM 2004, Dalian (China), 15-17 July, was hosted by Northeastern Univ- sity, China and Dalian University of Technology, China in cooperation with the Database Society of CCF. It was the International Conference on Web-Age Information Management. WAIM 2004 brought together participants from u- versities, industry, and governmentto present, discuss, and address both current issues and novel approaches in the practice, deployment, theory, and meth- ology of information management in the context of the World Wide Web. The conference provided an international forum for the sharing of original research results and practical development experiences among researchers and appli- tion developers from the many Web-related areas. The previous WAIM conf- ences wereheld in Shanghai(WAIM 2000), Xi'an (WAIM 2001), Beijing (WAIM 2002), and Chengdu, China (WAIM 2003). These conferences turned out to be very successful and each attracted more than 100 participants from all over the world. The WAIM 2004 conference included technical sessions organized around important subtopics such as data streamprocessing, time series data processing, mobilecomputing, cachemanagement, security, XML, Web services, Web search engines, query evaluation, and data mining, etc. Following careful review of the 291 submissionsby membersof the internationalprogramcommittee, 57 regular papers and 23 short/industrial papers were accepted for presentation at the conference and for publication in this volume. The submissions came from a total of 22 countries and regions, and the accepted ones were from 13 countries andregions, including Australia, Canada, Chile, China, HongKongSAR, Korea, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, UAE, UK, and USA. The 22nd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2003) returned to Chicago after an absence of 18 years. Chicago, a city well known for its trendsetting and daring architecture, has met the new century with a renewed commitment to open public spaces and human interaction. Thus it provided a ?tting venue for ER 2003, the scope of which was expanded to encompass all aspects of conceptual modeling in order to deal with constantly changing information technology and business practices and to accommodate a new openness in connecting systems to each other and to human users. The ER 2003 Program Co-chairs, Il-Yeol Song, Stephen Liddle, and Tok Wang Ling, along with an outstanding Program Committee assembled one of the ?nest technical programs of this conference series. The Gunpowder Epic is one of three planned publications on military technology within Dr Needham’s immense undertaking. The discovery of gunpowder in China by the 9th century AD was followed by its rapid applications. It is now clear that the whole development from bombs and grenades to the invention of the metal-barrel hand gun took place in the Chinese culture area before Europeans had any knowledge of the mixture itself. Uses in civil engineering and mechanical engineering were equally important, before the knowledge of gunpowder spread to Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Dr Needham’s new work continues to demonstrate the major importance of Chinese science and technology to world history and maintains the tradition of one of the great scholarly works of the twentieth century.
