This book examines the evolution of international political economy (IPE) as a field of study in China, detailing the evolving boundaries and the content of the field. It surveys how the key themes in IPE, such as the conceptualization of power at the global level, the question of international order and international organization, the state and globalization, money and finance, and the source of ideas and ideational innovation, have been debated in Chinese IPE in comparison to the foundational works of the West. The contributions map the genesis of the field inside China and the core characteristics of Chinese IPE, consider the limits of the development of the field in China, and identify the contributions which Chinese IPE can make to the global development of IPE. Each piece in this collection is co-authored by a prominent PRC scholar residing in China, and a distinguished 'foreign' scholar. The co-authors together highlight what they think are the core Chinese concerns of IPE in a particular area, and suggest what this understanding adds to the global discussion. This book is the first of its kind to paint a comprehensive picture of the manner in which the European Union (the EU) interacts with transnational policy networks (TPNs). The TPNs covered are those in a variety of fields including: conflict-prone natural resources, health, energy security, migration, human trafficking, combating of terrorism financing and climate change. The chapters are developed around six main lines of inquiry. The lines of inquiry articulated are: modalities through which the EU influences TPNs around the world, TPNs' influence of policy and decision-making within the EU, conditions under which engagement between the TPNs and the EU may be regarded as successful, the identity and location of the TPNs and finally the added value or futility of a strategy developed in Brussels to weaken or fortify interactions with the networks studied. The importance of TPNs should be approached from the angle of the heightened attention now placed on informal modes of decision making. Increasingly there is a sense that many international decisions are adopted and internalized through networks that can be efficient yet wanting in transparency. The book unveils complex debates on the inter-phase between inter-governmental / supranational entities like the EU, on the one hand, and networks, on the other. The physiognomy of this inter-phase matters not only for the EU but also for other such inter-governmental/ supranational bodies as well as networks. As communication and networking (CN) become specialized and fragmented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in CN have common threads and because of this, advances in one sub-discipline may transmit to another. This book describes and clarifies how certain problems can be resolved in Japan and Asia. For the future, the focus should be on Japan, which can provide "common knowledge" as a public good. The book collects the results of researchers in Japan, China, South Korea, and Indonesia on declining birthrates and aging, rapid technological innovation and societal changes, and recovery from natural disasters.Chapter 1 covers Japanese social welfare system reform and transformation of social governance. Chapter 2 deals with the decreasing birthrate and national security. Chapters 3 to 5 discuss three aspects of the impact of modern technology on Japanese society. Chapter 6 and 7 include the research results on recovery from the earthquake disasters in Indonesia and East Japan. Through reading this book, the increasingly necessity to capture Japanese studies in Asia as a public good can be understood.
