ZOOLEXICON is a one-volume source for terms referring to mammals,
birds, fishes, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. It has two
major divisions: . A dictionary of 13,000 non-technical entry words
used by English-speaking people around the world. It is extensively
cross-referenced between preferred common names and locally
accepted ones. . Appendixes of two basic types: the first group
deals with domesticated animals individually, telling of their
ancestral roots, breeds, including a glossary of terms applying to
each animal. The second group covers a wide range of subjects from
terms used in blood sports to animals important in mythology,
symbolism, and heraldry. There are terms used in the fur trade as
well as in butchering and carving. There are words for sounds made
by animals, for their tails, and for their excreta-secreta. There
are flip-flop lists of group names, derivative words, feeding
terms, and niches. ZOOLEXICON is a library and consumer reference
of value to writers, editors, professionals in wildlife management,
conservation, ecology, and zoo administration; research scientists
and technicians in all fields of zoology; journalists; educators
and information officers in classrooms, nature reserves, museums
and zoos; birders, wildlife and pet enthusiasts, and word-puzzle
constructors and solvers. Dr. Garst donated his slides of animals
to the Morgan Library at Colorado State University, which has used
them to establish a website. Royalties from the sales of this book
go towards the maintenance of this website: http:
