Archives of Joy - Reflections on Animals and the Nature of Being (Hardcover): Jean-Francois Beauchemin Archives of Joy - Reflections on Animals and the Nature of Being (Hardcover)
Jean-Francois Beauchemin; Translated by David Warriner
R413 Discovery Miles 4 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For readers of World of Wonders and the poetry of Mary Oliver comes a joyful, tender memoir of encounters with animals and their potential to transform the life of one writer. Two mismatched ducks quarrel amorously. A tortoise basks on a rock in the sun. Four deer ceremoniously visit a writer's garden to announce the arrival of a newborn fawn. In Archives of Joy, renowned poet, essayist, and novelist Jean-Francois Beauchemin turns his poetic and playful gaze to memories of animals he has known throughout his life, from fleeting encounters to deep relationships. With each meeting, Beauchemin returns to a simple thought: that joy in nature is an essential counterweight to the inescapable awareness of the brevity of life. In short, humorous, and often dreamlike vignettes, Beauchemin meditates on the mysteries of existence, the alchemy of memory, and the entwinement of the animal world with our own-whether he's nursing an injured bird back to health, deciphering the gaze of a judgmental cat, or keeping company with a workhorse nearing its death. His life as a writer and his beloved pet dogs and cats feature often, as do the creatures he encounters in his garden, at farms, or on woodland walks: sparrows, crows, deer, foxes, horses, and cows. Deeply restorative, imaginative, and dreamily poetic, Archives of Joy is a memoir that will stay with readers long after its final page.

Empty Tubes and Back Seat Memories - A Life Changing Experience (Hardcover): Russ Warriner Empty Tubes and Back Seat Memories - A Life Changing Experience (Hardcover)
Russ Warriner
R785 Discovery Miles 7 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An enlisted soldier's back seat memories from Vietnam as crew chief aboard a Huey gunship.

The author writes about his service time as a crew chief/door gunner on Huey helicopters with the Aerial Rocket Artillery. Telling of some narrow escapes he and his fellow unit soldiers faced as well as some things that happened that you will make you laugh.

The author served 1 1/2 tours in Vietnam and serving in I, II and III Corps. His tour took him to places like the DMZ and into the A Shau Valley.

For those that served in Vietnam, you may feel you are right there as you read the book. For those who did not go there, this book may help you to understand why so many returned from Vietnam and other wars with PTSD.

The author touches on some of what happened. However, he tried to stay away from things that could to upsetting. He has firsthand knowledge of how hard it can be to read about war and Vietnam.

After Vietnam, the author learned to deal with his PTSD by writing. He was inspired to write a newspaper column for the unit in the Fist Calvary Division newspaper, which inspired him to start a veterans association for those who served in the ARA. Finding ARA Alumni, organizing reunions, collecting Aerial Rocket Artillery history and running his web site for the ARA are among his passions.

The author hopes that "Empty Tubes and Back Seat Memories" will help everyone have a better understanding of Vietnam and the effects that it had on those who serve

Drawing on--but also extending--the theories and methods of applied linguistics, this book demonstrates how scholars of language might work together and with non-language specialists to address pressing concerns and issues of our time. Chapters explore efforts to recognize the legitimacy of stigmatized language varieties in public and institutional domains, museum-based science education for linguistically diverse children, how corpus analysis might illuminate the tension between the language choices and commitments of certain leaders, the embodied and artistic forms of meaning-making that challenge norms of Whiteness, and the transformative power of translanguaging in community-based theater. In addition, the volume demonstrates ways to enhance equity in healthcare delivery for immigrant families, examines the experiences of cultural health navigators working with refugee-background families, and highlights the value of raising public awareness of language issues related to social justice. These accounts show that applied linguists stand ready to interface with other scholars, other institutions, and the public to make socially-engaged and impactful contributions to the study of language, society, education, and access. Collectively, the authors respond to an important gap in the field and take a significant step towards a more socially-just, accessible, and inclusive approach to applied linguistics.

Advances in Ensuring the Microbiological Safety of Fresh Produce (Hardcover): Karl R. Matthews Advances in Ensuring the Microbiological Safety of Fresh Produce (Hardcover)
Karl R. Matthews; Contributions by Shirley Micallef, Wei Zhang, Karl R. Matthews, Chunlei Shi, …
R4,468 Discovery Miles 44 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing consumer demand for low-input cultivation and minimal processing has significantly increased the risk of microbiological contamination of fresh produce. This both presents a health risk to consumers and undermines trust in the food supply chain from farm to fork. Advances in ensuring the microbiological safety of fresh produce reviews our current understanding of key pathogenic risks to fresh produce such as Salmonella, Listeria and E.coli. The book addresses recent advances in improving safety along the value chain, from advances in detection to improving consumer handling of fresh produce. By providing a comprehensive insight into the pathogenic risks facing the fresh produce sector, the book details how key stakeholders across the agri-food supply chain can reduce the risk of pathogen contamination and outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. Edited by an internationally-renowned expert in the field and featuring contributions from a team of expert authors, Advances in ensuring the microbiological safety of fresh produce will be a standard reference for researchers in food safety, agricultural engineers specialising in fresh produce storage, retail and other companies involved in the fresh produce supply chain, as well as government and commercial agencies responsible for safety and quality monitoring of agri-food supply chains.

This book explores the challenges and opportunities involved in conducting research with members of immigrant, refugee and other minoritized communities. Through first-hand reflective accounts, contributors explore community-based collaborative work, and suggest important implications for applied linguistics, educational research and anthropological investigations of language, literacy and culture. By critically reflecting on the power and limits of university-based research conducted on behalf of, or in collaboration with, members of local communities and by exploring the complicated relationships, dynamics and understandings that emerge, the chapters collectively demonstrate the value of reflecting on the possibilities and challenges of the research process, including the ethical and emotional dimensions of participating in collaborative research.
