This volume examines the socio-cultural aspects of transnational mobility of the Korean diaspora across the globe, spanning countries such as Japan, the Philippines, Germany, the US, and the UK. The contributors explore gendered migration, social inclusion and exclusion in homeland and hostland, embodied multiple subjectivities and belonging in historical and contemporary contexts, migrants' work and family, ethnic media consumption, information and communication technology (ICT) in transnational mobility, ethnic return migration, and marriage migration. This work is a strong interdisciplinary and trans-regional study, combining various disciplines such as sociology, gender studies, anthropology, history, theater studies, media and communication studies, and Asian studies.

After graduation from Georgetown University in 1896, William Franklin Sands joined the US diplomatic corps as second secretary in Tokyo. His year there sparked his interest in East Asia, so when a position in Korea opened, he took it, with the help of his influential father, an admiral in the US navy. For two years he served under US Minister Horace Allen until a more powerful position opened as chief qdviser to the Korean government in 1900. As the most influential foreign adviser, Sands attempted to convince Emperor Kojong to undertake reforms and to promote Korean neutrality to keep the country independent. The author argues, however, that Sands was hampered by corrucpt officials who had the ear of the emperor, by the Japanese and the Russians who competed for influence and who tried to replace Sands with their own advisers, and, ironically, by Horace Allen. When he lost the confidence of Kojong and when the Russo-Japanese War broke out, Sands was forced out, having failed to maintain Korea's independence as Japan moved to take over. Although his subsequent activities included other diplomatic postings, teaching, and writing, he maintained an interest in Korea and offered his services as World War Two raged.

William Nelson Lovatt in Late Qing China: War, Maritime Customs, and Treaty Ports,1860-1904 looks at the late Qing dynasty through the eyes of a British-American who spent most of his adult life in China in the late nineteenth century, fighting in four wars, serving in its maritime customs service, and living in eleven different treaty ports. It is based on the newly-discovered journals, correspondence, and photographs of William Nelson Lovatt (1838-1904), who first arrived in China in 1860 as a sergeant in the British army to fight in the Second Opium War, and who then proceeded to fight against the Taiping in Shanghai, against the Nian in Tianjin, and finally against the Japanese in Taiwan, providing an inside look at those four conflicts. Joining the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service in 1863 under Inspector-General Sir Robert Hart, Lovatt provides a rare insider look at the operation of Hart and the Maritime Customs Service for during the four decades he served. Because he was based in treaty ports, he also provides a new look at those enclaves, their institutions, and their inhabitants – Chinese, missionaries, and fellow customs officials. Fluent in Chinese, his frequent travels outside the treaty ports gave him rare access to Chinese society available to few others. This volume opens up a new window on China during the final decades of the Qing dynasty.

Since the introduction and proliferation of the Internet, problems involved with maintaining cybersecurity has grown exponentially, and have evolved into many forms of exploitation. Yet, Cybersecurity has had far too little study and research. Virtually all of the Research that has taken place in cybersecurity over many years, has been done by those with computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics backgrounds. However, many cybersecurity researchers have come to realize that to gain a full understanding of how to protect a cyber environment requires not only the knowledge of those researchers in computer science, engineering and mathematics, but those who have a deeper understanding of human behavior: researchers with expertise in the various branches of behavioral science, such as psychology, behavioral economics, and other aspects of brain science. William Elwood Patterson (1841-1916) was born on the Patterson Plantation in Randolph County, North Carolina. His family moved to Jasper County, Illinois, when he was nine or ten years of age. August 12, 1861 he enlisted in Company K, 38th Illinois Volunteers, and served until he was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Prior to the Civil War, he was a teacher; after the war he was a farmer and served Jasper County as the justice of the peace and notary public. W. E. Patterson's diary was originally written in a small booklet of approximately ninety-four pages covered with cardboard and marbleized paper. Apparently, some of the entries found in his diary were made on the battlefield soon after the battle, while others may have been added later when he returned home from the war and read letters that he had sent to his father and his mother. His diary notes that while in the Union Army, his travels took him through Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. He fought in many battles and was wounded four times at Chickamauga. Chapters include: Jasper County, Illinois; Missouri to Alabama; Alabama to Kentucky, by Way of Tennessee; The Battle of Chaplin Hills at Perryville, Kentucky; Bowling Green to Nashville; The Battle of Stones River; Skirmishing at Tennessee; the Battle of Chickamauga; and Wounded, Captured, Paroled, Home.
