This book contains an Open Access chapter The COVID-19 pandemic
disrupted economies and society globally. In addressing the crisis,
the Internet proved incredibly important in enabling many to shift
physical work, education, and social activities online and
facilitating the tracking of the progress of the pandemic. Beyond
the Pandemic? is the first edited collection to concentrate on the
dynamic and complex relationship between the Internet and the role
it played in responding to the pandemic. Covid-19 accelerated the
digital economy transformation, changing the way work, education,
and social engagement is organized, potentially permanently. The
collection of international scholars who contributed to this volume
offer insightful perspectives on how the Internet ecosystem
responded and was changed as a consequence of Covid-19; the
sectoral consequences of shifting activity online that the Internet
enabled for many, but not for all; and the implications for
regulatory policies. Given how central digital technologies are to
all aspects of business, society, and government, Beyond the
Pandemic? is integral to the exploration of the sectoral
consequences of the Internet for business managers, policymakers
and researchers engaged in planning and study for the digital
economy future and planning for future pandemics.
This book provides an inexpensive and accessible discussion of
qualitative research and the potential role for qualitative
research in enhancing both the theoretical bases of occupational
and physical therapy and the knowledge bases that inform
evidence-based practice. It is a comprehensive text for students in
the rehabilitation disciplines with examples drawn from research
undertaken by physical therapists and occupational therapists. The
book provides a resource for graduate students, researchers new to
the field and to clinicians who seek a greater understanding of
qualitative research and its use within the professions of
occupational and physical therapy. Coverage and Orientation
Occupational and physical therapists are being urged to adhere to
"evidence-based practice" because clients and payers want services
that are based on evidence that demonstrates their effectiveness.
Qualitative Research in Rehabilitation : informing evidence-based
practice will be a timely, practical and practice-related
exploration of qualitative research, client-centred practice and
evidence-based practice as these inter-relate and as they pertain
to occupational and physical therapy. The material addresses a
subject of increasing concern and relevance to therapists. Thorough
explanations demonstrate the relevance of qualitative research for
evidence-based practice. The text explores issues specific to the
field of rehabilitation and focusses specifically on those
important to OT and PT. Information links theory, research and
practice in an understandable way. Resource effectively uses boxes
and tables to highlight key packets of information Illustrations of
"real" research and practice examples aid the reader in applying
their new-found knowledge to real-life issues. The book is written
in a readable style which makes the book accessible for students
and non-academically minded practitioners.
Saturday Night Live, Hollywood Comedy, and American Culture sheds
new light on the ways in which Saturday Night Live's
confrontational, boundary-pushing approach spilled over into film
production, contributing to some of the biggest hits in Hollywood
history, such as National Lampoon's Animal House, Ghostbusters, and
Beverly Hills Cop. Jim Whalley also considers how SNL has adapted
to meet the needs of subsequent generations, launching the film
careers of Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and others in the
process. Supported by extensive archival research, some of
Hollywood's most popular comedians are placed into the contexts of
film and television comic traditions and social and cultural trends
in American life.

The dangerously good follow-up to Baby's First Bank Heist from a major new and exciting partnership - Stephen Collins is cartoonist of The Guardian Weekend magazine and Jim Whalley is a fresh writing talent.
This book examines the recent controversy between international
trade and environmental policies. It analyses the use of
environmentally-motivated trade policies, national environmental
policies, and their relationships with the rules governing trade,
critically examining proposals rule reform. A theoretical framework
is provided for a consideration of the efficiency of environmental
trade policies and an evaluation made of empirical links between
environmental policy differences and trade flows. Concerns of
developing countries over environmentally-motivated market access
restrictions are highlighted in considering international trade
rules and the agreements reached at UNCED.
This book provides an in-depth introduction to the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Radio Regulations (RR) and the
policies that govern them. Established in 1906, these regulations
define the allocation of different frequency bands to different
radio services, the mandatory technical parameters to be observed
by radio stations, especially transmitters, and the procedures for
spectrum use coordination at the international level. The book
analyzes the interactions between different national policies and
the ITU RR, noting how these interactions influence spectrum policy
on the national level, setting up a comparative framework within
which to view these regulations and their effects. Beginning with
an overview of the history of the origins ITU RR, the book takes a
deep dive into the components of spectrum management including
radio communication service allocation, wireless technology
selection, radio usage rights, and spectrum rights assignment,
placing each analysis within the context of the push and pull
between national and international regulations. The book concludes
with chapters discussing issues affecting the future of spectrum
policy, including spectrum policy reform in developing countries,
the WRC-19, and IMT-2020. Shedding light on the longest-running
treaty documents in the history of modern telecommunications and
arguing for reforms that allow it to address the needs of all
nations, this book is useful to scholars and students of telecom
policy, digital policy, ICT, governance, and development as well as
telecom industry practitioners and regulators.

take drastic action - with dire consequences!
A nail-biting follow-up to the bestselling Baby's First Bank Heist and
Baby's First Jailbreak.
Between 1946 and 1964 seventy-five million babies were born,
dwarfing the generations that preceded and succeeded them. At each
stage of its life-cycle, the baby boom's great size has dictated
the terms of national policy and public debate. While aspects of
this history are well-documented, the relationship between the baby
boom and Hollywood has never been explored. And yet, for almost 40
years, baby boomers made up the majority of Hollywood's audience,
and since the 1970s, boomers have dominated movie production.
Hollywood and the Baby Boom weaves together interviews with leading
filmmakers, archival research and the memories of hundreds of
ordinary filmgoers to tell the full story of Hollywood's
relationship with the boomers for the first time. The authors
demonstrate the profound influence of the boomers on the ways that
movies were made, seen and understood since the 1950s. The result
is a compelling new account that draws upon an unprecedented range
of sources, and offers new insights into the history of American
movies.
Developing Professional Practice in the Early Years encourages the
reader to critically consider key aspects of early childhood
education and care. The book is a valuable and accessible tool for
those on professional pathways to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or
Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) or those engaged in Early
Childhood Studies programmes or similar degree programmes courses
relating to early years practice. This book will also be of
interest to those engaged in continuous professional development
(CPD) programmes. The book recognises the important contribution
that early years education and care can make to children's future
outcomes. It can be read in-depth or dipped into when need arises.
Each chapter will help the reader to engage with challenging
concepts and ideas which underpin early childhood policy and
practice. Strong practical elements to the book aim to support the
application of learning to high quality practice with young
children. The generic term 'early childhood professional' is used
throughout the book to encompass the diversity of roles within
early childhood practice. The book aims to support the reader to
critically consider the complexity of 'being professional' in
contemporary early childhood practice by providing a strong
theoretical and practice-based framework of the role and context of
the early childhood professional. Key features of the book include:
* Reflective tasks to support critical thinking about key aspects
of professional practice * Case studies to enable the reader to
learn from stories and situations about real professionals and
their practice * Positive Practice Impact (PPI) boxes to provide
specific examples of good professional practice in early childhood.
Each chapter of this essential text concludes by signposting
further reading - book chapters, journal articles, websites - to
build greater depth of knowledge and extend the reader's
understanding of early childhood theory and practice.
The name Faberge has long been a byword for luxury. Combining an
entrepreneurial vision for craftsmanship with innovative material
sourcing and technical ability, Carl Faberge created an astonishing
array of bespoke jewelled and enamelled objects at the end of the
19th and beginning of the 20th century. This beautifully
illustrated book explores the history and legacy of the House of
Faberge, from its origins in Russia - and its role in the glamorous
world of the Romanovs - to global recognition. Much of the story is
familiar, but less well known is the important part played by the
London branch. Opened in 1903, and the only one outside Russia, it
became a choice destination for Edwardian high society and an
international clientele. Featuring over 120 pieces, from delicate
flowers to Imperial Easter eggs, and with contributions from
leading experts Faberge: Romance to Revolution celebrates the
enduring fascination with this master craftsman's works.
Heat transfer phenomena involving boiling and condensation are an
important aspect of engineering in the power and process
industries. This book, aimed at final year undergraduates and
graduate students in mechanical or chemical engineering, deals with
these phenomena in detail. The first part of the book describes
gas-liquid two-phase flow, as a necessary preliminary to the later
discussion of heat transfer and changes of phase. A detailed
section on calculation methods shows how theory can be put to
practical use, and there are also descriptions of some of the
equipment and plant used in the process and power industries.
Most of the literature on 5G has been in the form of standards,
reports, and industry papers and articles. Because of this,
researchers from non-scientific or non-engineering disciplines have
struggled to understand how it is or could be operationalized and
standardized across the globe. Here Peter Curwen and Jason Whalley
offer the first manageable overview of 5G for a non-technical
audience. This book provides a full review of the current
literature, both academic and professional; an in-depth but
non-technical discussion of the historical background of the
development of 5G; and a broad, multidisciplinary survey of major
issues including spectrum, and the licensing and launch of 5G
networks throughout the world, distinguishing standalone 5G from
non-standalone 5G. Throughout, there is consideration given to how
operators and equipment vendors make money from mobile networks,
and where money is potentially to be made in the years to come.
Understanding 5G Mobile Networks: A Multidisciplinary Primer is a
must-read not only for researchers and students in economics,
business, strategy, and operations and logistics, but also for
regulators, mobile companies, vertical operators, and anyone else
interested in the development of this vital technology.
Mountain running ranks up there as one of the toughest sports.
Having the ability and athleticism to race up and down Britain's
highest peaks takes stamina, peak fitness and years of specialised
training. So how did a teenage punk rocker from Yorkshire,
seemingly existing on a diet of cider, parties and loud music,
become the British Champion fell runner? The history of mountain
running is peppered with legendary feats and characters, ultra-hard
men and women who can run seemingly non-stop over our highest and
toughest peaks and skylines. Flicking through the black-and-white
photographs telling the story of these past champions of the sport
you're struck by how wiry, super-fit and disciplined they look.
Then, from nowhere, along comes Gary Devine. A maverick who jogged
onto the scene sporting spiky dyed pink hair and a tatty running
vest, hungover from the previous night's party, smiling and joking
at the start line as he wiped the sleep out of his eyes - before
showing everyone a muddy pair of heels and running off to win. This
is the fascinating story of how an unlikely and eccentric runner
became, against all expectations, the British Champion. It's a tale
that focuses on the races that made up Devine's victorious 1990
season, while opening out to understand how the unruly, fearless
ethos at the heart of punk could chime perfectly with the spirited,
gutsy and dauntless root of mountain running; how the elements of
surprise and daring are central to both. It's a near-perfect
underdog narrative, a drama that traces one boy's life from
ordinary schoolkid to extraordinary winner - all against a backdrop
of alcohol, fights, arrests and extreme guitar noise. Following
Devine from his roots as a punk rock convert to his years racing
alongside the world's elite mountain runners, this is both a tale
of implausible triumph to match that of comic book hero Alf Tupper
and at the same time a compelling narrative of how running - like
life - can be a wonderful and unexpected adventure. "Faster!
Louder! is a great combination of different mad energy - punk and
fell running. I knew nothing about the cult of fell running. Now I
want to know more. The story has a unique take on music and running
as a life force and is also a love letter to the fell running
landscape." Richard Jobson, THe SKIDS "A stirringly evocative,
riveting, hilarious, nostalgic, important book about two opposing
worlds that aren't so different after all." Damian Hall, author and
elite ultra-runner "With the lifestyle Gary led, it's amazing how
the hell he was able to run races - never mind win so many. A bit
of a wayward lad but I'm full of admiration for him - he did it his
way!" Billy Bland, legendary fell runner "A strange, exhilarating
blast of a book, throbbing with energy and sweaty authenticity.
FASTER! LOUDER! celebrates fell-running as it used to be, rough and
untamed, through the story of a maverick hero whose remarkable
athletic triumphs are achieved against a grubby backdrop of brawls
and hangovers, squats and drug-busts, and very loud music." Richard
Askwith, author of 'Feet In The Clouds' "A most enjoyable look at
fell running with a punk soundtrack and attitude. At school I was
the one at the back of the pack sneaking off for a cig. Reading
this book has made me wish it had been different. The challenge and
exhilaration of the love of running in itself; the weather; the
fells and the personal challenge - it all makes for a great read
and I'm happy that Killing Joke may have been along for the ride."
Big Paul Ferguson, Killing Joke
The book provides an accessible introduction to many of the current
theoretical perspectives on disability; enabling readers to
challenge the taken-for-granted nature of traditional knowledge and
assumptions within the rehabilitation, health and community care
industries, and encouraging a more critical approach both to the
nature of rehabilitation following injury or illness and to the
'problem' of physical difference and disability. Through its
interrogation and exploration of new theoretical perspectives on
disability and rehabilitation, this book provides a unique text for
students and practitioners of nursing, occupational therapy,
physiotherapy and social work and for educators and researchers in
these fields. Although rehabilitation practitioners claim to aspire
to client-centred practice and advocate participatory modes of
research, rehabilitation theory remains curiously estranged both
from theoretical perspectives developed by disabled/disability
theorists and from critical perspectives on 'disability' that are
emerging from other academic disciplines. Thus immune from
alternate views, rehabilitation practitioners fail to question the
premise that their professional assumptions are correct or 'right'.
Contemporary theorists raise important questions, for example,
about professional power, concepts of normality, independence and
the physical body - issues central to rehabilitation - as well as
to the role of the cultural environment in producing prejudice, the
role of the social environment in creating disadvantage; and to
issues of power and privilege and of the systemic oppression of
disabled people. This book provides an introduction to the
expanding body of critical work on disability by theorists from a
range of perspectives, illustrating ways in which their theories
and insights contest or support assumptions within rehabilitation
theory. The book argues for a cross-fertilisation of ideas and
challenges hierarchies of power in which nurses and therapists
privilege their own assumptions, perspectives and knowledge while
overlooking or ignoring the perspectives both of disabled people
and of other theorists.Provides an accessible introduction to
current theoretical perspectives on disability Demonstrates how
these theoretical perspectives can inform a practitioner's approach
to rehabilitation Relevant for all the rehabilitation and health
care professions
