This true and exciting story collection concerns a little known
area of south Georgia, in Telfair County. The town of Milan
(locally pronounced My-lan) and the countryside present a series of
family dramas dating back to the early 1800's. Addie Garrison
Briggs, the author, introduces her family saga in her own words:
"Contrary to what one often reads in local histories and
genealogies, our ancestors were not all saints. Neither were they
all war heroes and most of them were far more likely to struggle
along on a small farm than to own a large plantation. In short, one
might say that our forebears failed to live up to our expectations.
The trouble with these ancestors was that they were real people.
Sometimes they were good, sometimes bad; sometimes they were wise,
and sometimes foolish. Perhaps they were a bit like us, with one
major difference. There seems to have been more of a spirited
quality to their lives. Whatever a man's actions, whether funny,
tragic, or decidedly wicked, he did it with a definite dash.
Therefore, while their lives may embarrass us, they will at the
same time unquestionably intrigue us."

Marcellus Hightower, the young boy in the novel, THIS IS ADAM,
returns to his hometown as a grown man in DEVIL'S ELBOW. He seeks
answers, turning for help to Adam Atwell, his surrogate father.
Adam, a black man in the segregated South, shares with Marcellus
the haunting memory of David Ransom's murder on the mighty Ocmulgee
River. The memories interweave with a quarter century of Marcellus
Hightower's quest for love and redemption, through his developing
character, economic calamity and the turmoil of war. With Adam's
sage guidance, he finds a way to "cleanse his heart" and face life
anew. "DEVIL'S ELBOW is a powerful novel indeed. The old verities-a
man's troubles with women, with himself, with love and guilt-are
all treated as freshly as if Cheney had discovered them." Walker
Percy (1969)

Reissued with a new introduction by the author, The Paraguayan War
is an engrossing and comprehensive account of the origins and early
campaigns of the deadliest and most extensive interstate war ever
fought in Latin America. One of the first significant
investigations of the Paraguayan War available in English, it
investigates the complexities of South American nationalism,
military development, and political intrigue.A 2003 CHOICE Academic
Title of the Year, The Paraguayan War sets the stage for The Road
to Armageddon, Thomas L. Whigham's exploration of the effects of
this devastating conflict on individuals, Paraguayan society, and
the continent as a whole. Together, these books fill an important
gap in our understanding of Latin American history.
In 1864 the capture of Brazilian steamer the Marques de Olinda
initiated South America's most significant war. Thousands of
Brazilian, Argentine, and Uruguayan soldiers engaged in a
protracted siege of Paraguay, leaving the Paraguayan economy and
population devastated. The suffering defied imagination and left a
tradition of bad feelings, changing politics in South America
forever. This is the definitive work on the Triple Alliance War.
Thomas L. Whigham examines key personalities and military
engagements while exploring the effects of the conflict on
individuals, Paraguayan society, and the continent as a whole. The
Road to Armageddon is the first book utilize a broad range of
primary sources and materials, including testimony from the men and
women who witnessed the war first-hand.

of wetland management is not evenly developed around the
cooperation from the SCOPE (SCientific Committee on Problems of the

is little Freshwater Wetlands and Shallow Water Bodies, information

The impetus for this volume was the 2nd International Wetlands
Conference which was held in June, 1984 at Trebon, Czechoslovakia.
An overview of the worlds wetlands was one of the themes of the
conference and it was decided that a useful follow-up would be a
publication on the same topic. The initial goal was to cover as
many of the worlds wetlands as possible in one volume and to have
an emphasis on wetland ecology, biota, classification, and
management. Individuals who made presentations at the Trebon confer
ence were asked to prepare chapters and the editors also solicited
other contributions. For a variety of reasons, the initial goal has
been difficult to reach, especially coverage of the entire globe,
and it has been necessary to publish the contributions in more than
one volume. Volume 1 represents the com pletion of the first phase
of the project and it covers most of the Western Hemisphere,
Australia, most of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Mediter
ranean region, and Papua New Guinea. Volume 2 will contain chapters
on Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, most of
northern and It is our hope that Volume western Asia, the Middle
East, and Indonesia. 2 will appear in the near future and, if
possible, a third volume will be published if authors can be
secured to cover areas such as the Far East, other parts of the
Indo-Pacific region, and New Zealand."
