With an Introduction and Notes by John M.L. Drew, University of Buckingham. Wilde's only novel, first published in 1890, is a brilliantly designed puzzle, intended to tease conventional minds with its exploration of the myriad interrelationships between art, life, and consequence. From its provocative Preface, challenging the reader to believe in 'art for art's sake', to its sensational conclusion, the story self-consciously experiments with the notion of sin as an element of design. Yet Wilde himself underestimated the consequences of his experiment, and its capacity to outrage the Victorian establishment. Its words returned to haunt him in his court appearances in 1895, and he later recalled the 'note of doom' which runs like 'a purple thread' through its carefully crafted prose.
Drama Adapted by John Osborne from the novel by Oscar Wilde. Characters: 11 male, 4 female, extras. Interior Set The author of Look Back in Anger, Inadmissible Evidence and The Entertainer has created a brilliant dramatization of this classic about a man who retains his youth while the decay of advancing years and moral corruption appears on a portrait painted by one of his lovers. "Osborne has done much more than a scissors and paste job on Wilde's famous story. He has ... created a sense of evil through implication." Guardian. "John Osborne ... has found in Oscar Wilde's macabre morality a velveted barouche for his own favorite themes [and he] conveys the fabulous story['s] ... fascination." Daily Telegraph.
Set in the decadent world of Victorian London, a beautiful young man called Dorian Gray becomes infatuated by the exquisite portrait that Basil Hallward has painted of him. He makes a Faustian pact that the picture will grow old while he remains forever young. Oscar Wilde's only novel caused an immediate scandal when it was first published in 1890 and its themes of youth and decay, innocence and corruption, art and reality are even more relevant to us in the 21st century than in the 19th. Adapted by Wilde's grandson Merlin Holland and John O'Connor, this delightfully witty version of Wilde's story incorporates material suppressed from the original manuscript.
Two young gentlemen living in 1890's England use imaginary friends to inject some excitement into their seemingly dull lives. Jack Worthing invents a brother, "Ernest," whom he pretends to be in order to visit his beloved Gwendolen in the city. Meanwhile, friend Algy Moncrieff uses the name "Ernest" while visiting Jack's beautiful young ward, Cecily in the country. Much confusion ensues as the two women find out they have been deceived by their "Ernests." Some would call this a society comedy; others, a Victorian farce. Regardless of the term used, this full colour graphic novel captures the era effortlessly. With an intricate attention to detail, wonderful characterisation and dramatically expressive and humorous artwork, this really is a graphic novel to cherish.
Oscar Wilde was already famous as a brilliant wit and raconteur
when he first began to publish his short stories in the late 1880s.
Admired by George Orwell and W. B. Yeats, the stories include
poignant fairy-tales such as "The Happy Prince" and "The Selfish
Giant," the extravagant comedy of "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime" and
"The Canterville Ghost," and the daring narrative experiments of
"The Portrait of Mr. W. H.," Wilde's fictional investigation into
the identity of the dedicatee of Shakespeare's sonnets. John
Sloan's Introduction argues for Wilde's originality and literary
achievement as a short-story writer, emphasizing his literary skill
and sophistication, and arguing for the centrality of Wilde's
shorter fiction in his literary career. The collection includes a
useful and up-to-date bibliography and extensive and helpful
explanatory notes, and an Appendix reprints an important passage
from the book-length version of "The Portrait of Mr. W. H." on the
Neo-Platonic ideal of friendship between men, an important key to
the short story's meaning.

Oscar Wilde's chilling fable comes to new life With thirteen original and evocative B/W illustrations by John Murphy. "Eternal youth, infi nite passion, pleasures subtle and seccret, wild joys and wilder sins-he was to have all these things. The portrait was to bear the burden of his shame..." Such is the fateful wish of Dorian Gray, the young aristocrat who, enthralled by his own beauty, makes a Devil's Bargain: his portrait will age while he remains eternally young. Poisoned by the influence of the insidiously charming Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian makes the pursuit of new and sinful sensations his highest aim in life. As he tests Lord Henry's theories of Hedonism in the decadent underbelly of Victorian London, Dorian's good looks remain unblemished. His portrait must bear the burden of his sins.

The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde This superb moral entertainment tells the story of a man who preserves his youth and is feted by society, while his portrait visibly deteriorates with time. John Osborne's brilliant and concise dramatization highlights the relevance of this tale in the modern to world, where, as Osborne says, "It is obligatory be slim, trim, careless.
`The truth is rarely pure, and never simple.' `. . .in married life three is company and two is none.' Is this play a `unique work of art' as Oscar Wilde believed? Or, as a first-night reviewer claimed in 1895, it `represents nothing, means nothing, is nothing'? This is for you to decide. . .
