The relationship between theology and literature in the 18th century is not identical to the relationship between religion and literature or piety and literature, neither conceptually nor factually, neither historically nor systematically. On the whole the relationship can be described as unstable, and in detail as difficult and open. Church-historical differentiations in the religious spectrum of Judaism, Catholicism and - with historically appropriate internal differentiation - Protestantism connect the contributions throughout the literary-historical epochs from the Baroque period to Romanticism with the description and analysis of constellations and relationships of competition and supplementation, of confrontation and coexistence. For example, theology learned from literature how to captivate the congregation as an audience; literature - as sermon - wanted to take over the claim to meaning and orientation from theology.

Dieser Band eroeffnet die erste Werkausgabe von Albrecht Haushofer (1903-1945) mit seinen drei zu Lebzeiten publizierten Dramen. Haushofer nahm eine ganz eigene Position in OEffentlichkeit und Literatur des Nationalsozialismus ein, zu dem er schon fruh auf Distanz gegangen war: Als konservativer Wissenschaftler und politischer Mitarbeiter in der Dienststelle Ribbentrop und spater des Auswartigen Amtes glaubte Haushofer daran, dass das nationalsozialistische System von innen verandert werden koennte. Seine hier vorgestellten, bislang wenig beachteten historischen Dramen reflektieren kritisch die politische Konfrontation von Geist und Macht. Um individuelle Schuld und die Moeglichkeiten und Grenzen des Widerstehens und der Selbstbehauptung in der Zeit der Barbarei kreisen daruber hinaus seine beruhmt gewordenen achtzig Moabiter Sonette, die er nach seiner Inhaftierung Ende 1944 im Berliner Gefangnis Moabit bis zu seiner Ermordung durch ein Gestapo-Kommando verfasste.
