Many of these theories are logically interconnected, while some differ widely and seem incompatible with each other, leading to divergent results about potential means of prevention. In this innovative work, leading researchers on the topic of school shootings introduce their findings and theoretical concepts in one combined systematic volume. The contributions to this work highlight both the complementary findings from different fields, as well as cases where they diverge or contradict each other. This leads to unpredictable escalations and violence can no longer be contained adequately by the relevant control regimes, such as police, state surveillance institutions, national repression apparatuses and international law. However, before investigating this hypothesis from an internationally and historically comparative perspective, the terms and "tools" for this undertaking have to be rendered more precisely. Since both "control" and "violence" are all but clear-cut terms but rather highly debatable and contested concepts that may take multiple connotations. The main question is whether an increase in certain forms of violence can be explained by the failure or, in turn, "overeffectiveness" of certain control mechanisms. It is asked, for instance, which contribution religion can make to limit violence and, in turn, which destructive potential religion might have in its fundamentalist form. Moreover, the concept of individual self-control as well as social institutions and strategies of collective disengagement and de-radicalization are investigated with regard to their potential for controlling violence. The Control of Violence in Modern Society concludes with a re-examination of the hypothesis of a loss of control by specifying in what cases and under which circumstances we can speak of a loss of control over violence.

Diese Studie begeht einen neuen Weg zur Erklarung von Devianz und Gewalt im Jugendalter, indem sie versucht, zwei soziologische Ansatze, die Theorie Sozialer Desintegration und die Control Balance Theory, miteinander zu verknupfen. Es geht um die Frage der Realitatskontrolle uber eigene Lebenswege aufgrund der Bedingungen in den verschiedenen Sozialisationsfeldern von Schule, Familie und Peers. Die leitende These der empirischen Untersuchung besagt, dass das Zusammenwirken von Anerkennungsdefiziten und Imbalancen von Kontrolle die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Devianz und Gewalt erhoeht.

Die Studie befasst sich auf breiter empirischer Basis mit den vielfaltigen Lebenswelten und -realitaten junger Menschen und beleuchtet differenziert die moeglichen Zusammenhange wiederholter Jugenddelinquenz.

Der Forschungsverbund Desintegrationsprozesse beschaftigte sich mit den Gefahren sozialer Desintegration und den daraus resultierenden Gefahrdungen und negativen Folgen fur das Leben in einer modernen Gesellschaft. Die einzelnen Projekte haben eine Fulle von empirischen Ergebnissen hervorgebracht, die fur die Integrations-Desintegrations-Problematik von Bedeutung sind.
In dem vorliegenden Band geht es v.a. um die Wirksamkeit unterschiedlicher Intergrationsmechanismen. Dabei wird danach gefragt, ob und inwiefern bislang bewahrte Integrationsmechanismen aufgrund innerer und ausserer gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen versagen, ob neue Integrationsmechanismen an ihre Stelle treten, welche Bindungskrafte nationale Gesellschaften unter Globalisierungsbedingungen uberhaupt noch zusammen halten und welche Art von Integration heutzutage benotigt wird bzw. noch zeitgemass ist. Die einzelnen Beitrage verstehen sich als Anregung, um uber Integrationspotenziale und Integrationsnotwendigkeiten, aber angesichts der gegenwartigen Krisenprozesse auch uber Desintegrationstendenzen neu nachzudenken. In starker theoretischer Perspektive werden deshalb Desintegrationsdynamiken und die daraus resultierenden Konfliktpotenziale thematisiert."

Dass die "Integrationsmaschine Stadt" gegenwartig einer harten Belastungsprobe ausgesetzt ist und dass die soziale Stadt immer groessere Regulierungsprobleme zu bewaltigen hat, gilt weitestgehend als unstrittig. Es wird offenbar schwieriger, das schon immer zerbrechliche Verhaltnis von stadtischer Integration und Desintegration ohne groessere innere und aussere Schaden in einer tragbaren Balance zu halten. So gibt es verschiedene Anhaltspunkte dafur, dass es nicht unbedingt die unmittelbare physische Gewalt ist, die im oeffentlichen Raum verstarkt zum Ausbruch kommt und damit auffallig wird, sondern dass das Potential fur Gewaltbilligung bzw. -bereitschaft bereits in der Struktur des sozialen Zusammenlebens angelegt sein kann.

Integration und Desintegration sind Phanomene von zentraler Bedeutung fur moderne Gesellschaften. Die Frage, wie soziale Ordnung moeglich ist, treibt die Soziologie seit ihren Anfangen um. Im Zuge der Globalisierung verscharft sich die Integrationsproblematik, weil Integration traditionell eine nationalstaatliche Rahmung besass. Desintegrationsprozesse sind die Folge. Desintegration kann aber auch endogene Ursachen wie Individualisierung, Entsolidarisierung oder Erosion von Staatlichkeit haben. Der Reader versammelt klassische und neue Texte zur Integrations-/Desintegrationsdebatte. Zu Beginn werden grundlegende Konzeptionen von Integration und verschiedene analytische Zugange zur Desintegration vorgestellt. Es folgen Texte, die sich mit spezifischen Dimensionen der Integrations- und Desintegrationsdynamik (Anomie, Konflikt, Ausgrenzungen und Ungleichheiten, Kontrolle) befassen. Ein weiterer Abschnitt beleuchtet exemplarische Folgen von Desintegration. Abschliessend geht es um die Wirksamkeit moeglicher Integrationsmodi. Den einzelnen Kapiteln ist jeweils eine kurze Einfuhrung zu den ausgewahlten Texten vorangestellt.

Vor dem Hintergrund der allgemeinen Integrationsproblematik moderner Gesellschaften und dem Wissensfundus der unterschiedlichen Integrationstheorien werden zentrale Aspekte der Integrations- und Anerkennungsproblematik behandelt, die sich aus aktuellen Desintegrationstendenzen der Gesellschaft ergeben.

Das yom Land Nordrhein-Westfalen gegrUndete und getragene "For- schungs- und Entwicklungszentrum fUr objektivierte Lehr- und Lern- verfahren" (FEoLL) ist in mindestens zweifacher Weise mit dem Fak- tor "Zeit" im Bildungswesen besonders verbunden. Zum einen kann die GrUndung des FEoLL an der Wende von den 60er zu den 70er Jahren als Ausweis einer fUr Reformvorstellungen und -versuche im Bildungswe- sen besonders gUnstigen Zeit angesehen werden. Zum anderen sollte durch die GrUndung die wechselseitige EinfluBzeit zwischen wissen- schaftlich-technischer sowie sozialwissenschaftlicher Entwicklung und dem Bildungswesen, zwischen Reformerfordernissen und Reform- prozessen, zwischen ReformmaBnahmen und ihrer Wirkungsfeststellung verklirzt werden. Aufgrund dieser doppelten Beziehung zum Faktor "Zeit" konnen die in diesem Band vorgelegten Analysen zur Bedeu- tung der Zeit bei geplanten Veranderungen im staatlichen Bildungs- wesen auch als Folie fUr die Reflektion der Wirkungsbedingungen, der Wirkungen und der Fehlwirkungen von Institutionen wie dem FEoLL angesehen werden. Den Beitragen dieses Bandes unterliegt ein gesellschaftliches Grundverstandnis, daB es ein entscheidendes Merkmal demokratischer Organisationen ist, zu jeder Zeit Verbesserungen fUr "an der Zeit" zu halten. Zu dieser Auffassung bekennen sich - zumindest deklama- torisch - auch die politischen Entscheidungstrager und die Bil- dungsadministration. Jedoch kommt es in der Praxis von Reformbe- mlihungen zum staatlichen Schulsystem haufig zu Friktionen, die nicht zuletzt durch unterschiedliche Interessen zum Faktor "Zeit" begrlindet sind oder durch unterschiedliche Instrumentalisierungen des Zeitfaktors in Erscheinung treten.

Daher ist nicht versucht worden, moglichst einen "runden" Ein druck fUr den Leser zu entwickeln nach einer "kosmetischen" Bearbeitung aufgetretener Diskrepanzen zwischen theoretischem Wollen und praktischem Tun. Wie negativ sich solche Verfahren fUr die Praxis auswirken, darauf haben Becker u.a. trefflich hingewiesen: "Auch For schungsprojekte scheitern - aber insgeheim." Forschungsprojekte mUssen, nach dieser zutreffenden Schilde rung, wegen der Finanzierung hohe Standards anbieten, urn auch gegenUber ihren Rezipienten zu signalisieren, wie wichtig und wertvoll ein solches Projekt im Gegensatz zu seinen eigenen Versuchen sei: "Wenn dann die Projekte in die Kleinarbeit gekommen sind, stellen sich oftmals Probleme dar, die man zunachst Uberhaupt nicht gesehen hat; mehr noch: in vie len Fallen wird die Unmog lichkeit der DurchfUhrung des gewahlten Ansatzes deutlich."

Research on violence in Western societies has increased in recent years. The reasons for this development are manifold ranging from the rise of certain patterns of violence, or a new sensitivity in the population, to a return of atavistic forms of violence, and a shift to new societal areas of violent activities. What has been missing to date, however, is a systematic overview of the relevant findings in various academic disciplines.

Eine attraktive demokratische Kultur ist keine Selbstverstandlichkeit. Vielmehr mussen die Bedeutung und die Qualitat demokratischer Werte und Normen immer wieder begreiflich und erlebbar gemacht werden. Aber welche Massnahmen sind hierfur geeignet und welche nicht? Wie kann die Wirksamkeit von Programmen und Projekten optimiert werden? Wie kann sichergestellt werden, dass vorhandenes Wissen bei der Konzeption von Programmen und Projekten genutzt wird?
