T e greatest temperature changes occurred at middle and high latitudes in the northern hemispheres. T e trend towards warmer average surface temperatures for the period since 1976 is roughly three times that of the past 100 years as a whole. In the last decades warming seems to be attributable to human activities (man-made environmental changes) like land-use changes, deforestation, urbanisation and the reduction of wetlands. Global climate change is likely to be accompanied by an increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Based on European health initiatives on reducing workplace risks and promoting workplace health, this book focuses on issues that predominantly or exclusively affect women, or have gender-specific implications due to workplace inequalities. Among the topics covered: occupational hazards, work/life balance issues, pregnancy, smoking cessation, alcohol awareness, diet/exercise and other lifestyle concerns.

Awareness of the importance of nutrition and physical activity for good health has given rise to a multitude of projects with different scopes and methodologies. This variety makes it necessary to bring the results of these activities into a coordinated framework. This book aims to summarize the activities carried out by the EU countries to address these determinants of health. Contributors are drawn from Germany, Italy, Sweden, and United Kingdom.

Die Herausgeber prasentieren hier ausgewahlte Beitrage des 2. Nationalen Praventionskongresses, der gemeinsam mit dem 6. Deutschen Kongresses fur Versorgungsforschung durchgefuhrt wurde. Der wissenschaftliche Austausch zwischen praktisch tatigen Medizinern und Vertretern aller am Gesundheitssystem interessierten Experten verdeutlicht die Chancen des interdisziplinaren Dialogs fur die Versorgung gesundheitlich gefahrdeter und kranker Menschen.

Pravention lasst sich am besten mit vorausschauender Problemvermeidung ubersetzen. Seit der Ottawa-Charta der Weltgesundheitsorganisation gelten Pravention und Gesundheitsforderung als die geeignetsten Instrumente, dem Kostenanstieg im Gesundheitswesen durch Vermeidung des Sozialversicherungsfalls entgegenzuwirken; mit andern Worten: durch Vermeidung von Bedarf an Behandlung, Rehabilitation und Pflege. Die lange politische Missachtung des Praventionsansatzes und seine kaum mehr nennenswerte offentliche Forderung haben zu einer volligen Unterentwicklung hierzulande beigetragen. Der 1. Nationale Praventionskongress will einen Neuanfang in Sachen Pravention und Gesundheitsforderung, und er will in diesem Zusammenhang eine zukunftig starkere Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis anstossen."
