***THE FOLLOW UP TO THE AWARD-WINNING AND BESTSELLING STORIES FOR BOYS WHO DARE TO BE DIFFERENT***

Tom Daley, Oliver Sacks, the Jamaican Bobsled team, Amrou Al-Kadhi, Carlos Acosta... all dared to be different.

This is the follow-up to the much loved and hugely successful Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different, the bestselling book that changed countless boys' lives around the world and gave them the confidence to be themselves.

What have the footballer Kylian Mbappé, the philosopher Socrates and the singer Ed Sheeran all got in common? All three of them defied expectations - going against the grain and pursuing their dreams - despite a seemingly impossible barrage of obstacles and difficulties. Their stories are incredible, as are those of the tap-dancer Evan Ruggiero, the Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri, and the other inspirational boys who fill the pages of this extraordinary book.

It's books like these that can make a huge difference to parents and their children's lives. In this day and age, any publication that shows how we can triumph in the face of adversity and prejudice deserves to be read over and over again.

Tim Brookes
R770 Discovery Miles 7 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

If something is important, we write it down. Yet 85% of the world's writing systems are on the verge of vanishing - not granted official status, not taught in schools, discouraged and dismissed.

When a culture is forced to abandon its traditional script, everything it has written for hundreds of years - sacred texts, poems, personal correspondence, legal documents, the collective experience, wisdom and identity of a people - is lost.

This Atlas is about those writing systems, and the people who are trying to save them. From the ancient holy alphabets of the Middle East, now used only by tiny sects, to newly created African alphabets designed to keep cultural traditions alive in the twenty-first century: from a Sudanese script based on the ownership marks traditionally branded into camels, to a secret system used in one corner of China exclusively by women to record the songs and stories of their inner selves: this unique book profiles dozens of scripts and the cultures they encapsulate, offering glimpses of worlds unknown to us - and ways of saving them from vanishing entirely.

Nick Brooks's Promise Boys is a trailblazing, blockbuster YA mystery about three teen boys of colour who must investigate their principal’s murder to clear their own names. For fans of Angie Thomas, Jason Reynolds, and Karen McManus. The Urban Promise Prep School vows to turn boys into men. As students, J.B., Ramón, and Trey are forced to follow the prestigious "program's" strict rules. Extreme discipline, they’ve been told, is what it takes to be college bound, to avoid the fates of many men in their neighborhoods. This, the Principal Moore Method, supposedly saves lives. But when Moore ends up murdered and the cops come sniffing around, the trio emerges as the case's prime suspects. With all three maintaining their innocence, they must band together to track down the real killer before they are arrested. But is the true culprit hiding among them? This gripping thriller shines a glaring light on how the system too often condemns Black and Latinx teen boys to failure before they’ve even had a chance at success. 'Thrilling . . . Promise Boys will stay with you long after the last page' – Karen M. McManus, author of One of Us Is Lying

Special Topics in Intellectual Property (Hardcover): Andrea Twiss-Brooks Special Topics in Intellectual Property (Hardcover)
Andrea Twiss-Brooks
R2,884 Discovery Miles 28 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book discusses the combined fields of Intellection Property and Information Science. At this crossroads of these two disciplines are lawyers, educators, intellectual property specialists, searchers, librarians, and consultants, each requiring a lengthy list of skills necessary for the job. The results of the work they do is used for business and legal decisions across many sectors of our society, including industry, academia, government, and non-profits, to name a few. This book originated from the American Chemical Society (ACS) Symposium entitled "IP to IP: Intellection Property for Information Professionals," presented in Washington DC on August 19th, 2009. It was organized to highlight the specialty training and education required to work in this field. The book is targeted towards Information Scientists learning about Intellectual Property. Traditional education sources such as universities are represented, and are specialty offerings from the pharmaceutical sector and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The original six sessions from the Symposium are included in this text as separate chapters: Education and Certification of Patent Information Professionals in Europe; The PERI Patent Information Course; Law Librarianship: Exploring current trends in the 21st century; The USPTO: Education of the Inventor Community; Copyright Basics; Recent Developments in Patent Reform. Additional chapters and content have been added to more fully develop this text.
Although this Symposium captured several intellectual property topics with current information for mid-2009, this content should still prove to be a valuable resource to the reader in future years. This book is an resource for students or others looking to take the next step into intellectual property as a new career choice.

A Guide to the PCA Arbitration Rules (Hardcover, New): Brooks Daly, Evgeniya Goriatcheva, Hugh Meighen A Guide to the PCA Arbitration Rules (Hardcover, New)
Brooks Daly, Evgeniya Goriatcheva, Hugh Meighen
R8,334 Discovery Miles 83 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a guide to and commentary on the new procedural rules for arbitration adopted by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in December 2012. The PCA is a unique arbitral institution - an intergovernmental organization counting over one hundred member states - with a rapidly growing annual caseload of arbitrations involving various combinations of states, state entities, intergovernmental organizations, and private parties. The 2012 PCA Rules are the most recent set of arbitral rules from any institution, and constitute a consolidation of four sets of PCA Rules drafted in the 1990s, and updated in light of PCA experience and the revision of other procedural regimes. They include special provisions adapted to arbitrations involving public entities and a number of novel provisions drafted on the basis of the PCA's experience administering arbitrations. In recent years, the PCA caseload has expanded to the extent that the total amount in dispute in PCA cases is estimated to be greater than that in any other arbitral institution, increasing the need for a comprehensive guide to arbitration under its auspices. This text benefits from the unparalleled insights of its three co-authors, all of whom are PCA lawyers, one of whom is the Deputy Secretary-General of the PCA, and a member of the drafting committee for the 2012 PCA Rules. An introductory chapter, describing the mandate for the revised rules from the PCA member states, as well as the drafting process itself, is followed by a rule-by-rule analysis following the familiar structure of the rules themselves. This analysis is split into four sections: the introductory rules; the composition of the arbitral tribunal; arbitral proceedings; and the award. The comprehensive appendices are intended to reduce the need for recourse to other materials and provide a stand-alone resource.

Nick Brooks, award-winning filmmaker and author of Promise Boys, mixes out-of-this-world sci-fi with contemporary themes of friendship, community, and social justice in this hit middle-grade series.   Ferrous City is suddenly a lot more interesting—in fact, a little too interesting for Ethan Fairmont. Ethan’s beloved neighborhood is full of new faces. Lifelong residents are being priced out of their homes, and new businesses are replacing old favorites. At school, Ethan finds a rival in new-kid Fatima, an inventor who is just as science savvy as him. She even has TWO patents! Then there’s the mysterious real estate agent with way too many questions for Ethan. Not to mention the extraterrestrial-obsessed Jodie and his “Aliens Are Here” club.   It’s all too much for Ethan and he begins to miss Cheese, his adorable six-eyed alien pal, even more. Fortunately for Ethan and his friends Kareem and Juan Carlos, distraction comes in the form of a top-secret project. Cheese left a communication device under Ethan’s bed before exiting the planet. There’s just one problem: they can’t figure out how it works!   As Ferrous City continues to change and eyes are everywhere, will the trio be able to keep their secret and reach Cheese, or is something nefarious brewing right next door?   E.T. meets Stranger Things in the second title of this unforgettable sci-fi adventure series, perfect for readers ages 8 to 12.

Heard the one about the Englishman, the Scotsman and the Irishman? This biting topical comedy pokes a finger at ideas of national identity, class and Britain's role in the modern world. Set in a once-grand country manor house now converted into a language school teaching English to foreign students, Queens English looks at the peculiarities and the stereotypes of the English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish and American cultures. The American, a brash New Yorker named Ruby, has recently won the school in a poker game, and now has big plans - including a surprise visit from a Royal guest. But first she has to try and gain control over the four teachers and their different backgrounds as tempers flare while personal and national grudges are brought out into the open, threatening to upstage HRH's imminent visit.
