Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

This sociopolitical study shows why patriarchy has been the dominant pattern in Algeria, in spite of colonialism, revolutionary war, and the implementation of state socialism after independence. Knauss carefully analyzes Algerian class formation, ideology, and gender relations, and then demonstrates how these factors decisively influenced the persistence of patriarchy as well as the status of women. From time to time the International Journal of Fracture has presented matters thought to be of special interest to its readers. In previous special issues (December 1980 and April 1981), Dr H.W. Liu as Guest Editor presented a series of review papers dealing with fatigue processes and characteristics in metals and non-metals. Continuing this policy, which is consistent with our stated objectives, a second review dealing with time depen dence in the fracture process, including the effect of material inertia but essentially excluding very strong shock effects in solids, has been assembled under the generic term "dynamic fracture." We hope that the ensuing state-of-the-art review will yield an instructive and timely product which readers will find useful. To assist us in presenting this subject, we have prevailed upon a well-known worker in dynamic fracture, Dr W.G. Knauss, Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, California Institute of Technology to act as Guest Editor for this special double issue. James Loeb (1867–1933), one of the great patrons and philanthropists of his time, left many enduring legacies both to America, where he was born and educated, and to his ancestral Germany, where he spent the second half of his life. Organized in celebration of the sesquicentenary of his birth, the James Loeb Biennial Conferences were convened to commemorate his achievements in four areas: the Loeb Classical Library (2017), collection and connoisseurship (2019), and after pandemic postponement, psychology and medicine (2023), and music (2025). The subject of the second conference was Loeb’s deep and multifaceted engagement with the material culture of the ancient world as a scholar, connoisseur, collector, and curator. The volume’s contributors range broadly over the manifold connections and contexts, both personal and institutional, of Loeb’s archaeological interests, and consider these in light of the long history of collection and connoisseurship from antiquity to the present. Their essays also reflect on the contemporary significance of Loeb’s work, as the collections he shaped continue to be curated and studied in today’s rapidly evolving environment for the arts.

From time to time the International Journal of Fracture has presented special matters thought to be of interest to its readers. In previous issues, for example, Dr. H.W. Liu as Guest Editor assembled a series of review papers dealing with fatigue processes and characteristics in metals and non-metals (December 1980 and April 1981). Five years ago Guest Editor W.G. Knauss collected works dealing with dynamic fracture (March and April 1985). Continuing this policy, Dr. W.G. Knauss and Dr. A.J. Rosakis of the California Institute of Technology as Guest Editors have now organized an extensive set of papers concerning the influence of non-linear effects upon the mechanics of the fracture process. This collection is based upon contributions to a relatively small international Symposium on Non Linear Fracture Mechanics held under the auspices of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and convened at the California Institute of Technology in March 1988. It should be noted that although the description of non-linear fracture inherently encompasses a strong material science component, this aspect is not heavily emphasized in the ensuing papers due to the intentional focus upon mechanics. Volume 42 of the International Journal of Fracture will therefore, in successive issues, deal respectively with topics in (1) Damage, (2) Interfaces and Creep, (3) Time Dependence, and (4) Continuum Plasticity. The contributors to this volume, like many others concerned with medical education have for a long whilebeen conscious of the fact that in the training of medical students and in the practice of medicine too little attention is being paid to the psychological aspects of illness and to the use of psychotherapy in patient care. In an attempt to fill this gap medical students at University College Hospital, London, have since 1958 been given the opportunity on a voluntary basis to treat a pa tient with weekly analytically-orientated psychotherapy under supervision for a year or longer. In 1977 a similar scheme was started at the Psychosomatic Clinic of Heidel berg University. We were fortunate in obtaining generous financial support from the European Community which has enabled teachers and students from our two uni versities in Great Britain and the Federal Republic of Germany to collaborate in this student-psychotherapy teaching project and to compare our experiences. In this book we present an account of this joint educational endeavour, including our successes and our failures, as well as our attempts to solve some of the problems we have en countered. We decided to let individual supervisors and teachers who inevitably differed in their approach write their own contributions rather than try to present a unified pic ture which would not have given a fair impression of our work and experience. Ifthis has led to some repetition in the text we hope readers will appreciate the reason for it."
