Handbook on Innovation and Project Management: Andrew Davies, Sylvain Lenfle, Christoph H. Loch, Christophe Midler Handbook on Innovation and Project Management
Andrew Davies, Sylvain Lenfle, Christoph H. Loch, Christophe Midler
R6,254 Discovery Miles 62 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Identifying the origins of innovation and project management, this unique Handbook explains why and how the two fields have grown and developed as separate disciplines, highlighting how and why they are now converging. It explores the theoretical and practical connections between the management of innovation and projects, examining the close relationship between the disciplines. Chapters introduce new research examining how organisations manage innovative projects to compete in global markets and tackle some of the immense economic, social and environmental challenges facing societies in the 21st century. Leading scholars in the field examine the management of innovative projects in various forms and across diverse contexts, including R&D, new product development, agile, collaboration, trust and ambidexterity. The Handbook outlines efforts to cross-fertilise ideas from innovation and project management, share and create new concepts, and borrow theories from other disciplines to assist empirical research and develop a more integrated research agenda, offering practical guidance on how to manage innovative projects in real-world settings. Comprehensive and invaluable, this Handbook is a critical read for innovation management and project management scholars and students. Practitioners in both fields interested in developing their professional skills and acquiring thought leadership in a converging field will also benefit greatly from reading this.

By and large, corporations of the 21st century have come to realise that their obligations to societies in terms of corporate social responsibility are fourfold: economic, ethical, altruistic and strategic. Meeting these four responsibilities is crucial to their survival in their various markets and industries; it also requires them to rewrite their previously less socially responsible business models in order to do so. All indications continue to suggest that it is those organisations that are perceived to be socially responsible by stakeholders in modern markets that survive and prosper. Corporations have equally realised that by being innovative in all things including their CSR activities and initiatives they will add value to the so-called bottom line, to the positive contributions they make to society and to how they are perceived by their key stakeholders."

Handbook of Intelligence Studies (Hardcover): Loch K. Johnson Handbook of Intelligence Studies (Hardcover)
Loch K. Johnson
R6,558 Discovery Miles 65 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important new handbook examines the growing field of Intelligence Studies from A-to-Z. It explains how intelligence agencies operate; how they collect information from around the world; the problems faced in providing further insight into this 'raw' information through the techniques of analysis; and the difficulties that accompany the dissemination of intelligence to policymakers in a timely manner.
The Handbook of Intelligence Studies contextualises the history, politics, and policies that are part and parcel of a solid understanding of how intelligence agencies function in the modern era - an 'Information Age' characterized by the rapid flow of data around the globe. Since 9/11, people around the world have acquired a greater appreciation for the importance of the information obtained by the officials responsible for protecting their security. Across the globe, nations are experimenting with new forms of intelligence capabilities, including a strong emphasis on accountability in countries that were formerly led by autocratic regimes with notoriously unsavoury secret services.
This handbook is a benchmark publication with major importance both for current research and for the future of the field. It will be essential reading for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and scholars of intelligence studies, international security, strategic studies and political science in general.

How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It - A Practical Guide to Mastering Very Large Government Projects... How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It - A Practical Guide to Mastering Very Large Government Projects (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Jimoh Ibrahim, Christoph Loch, Kishore Sengupta
R762 Discovery Miles 7 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since 1960, two-thirds of very large governmental projects in Nigeria have not only failed, but been abandoned mid-course. This presents a bigger failure rate than mega projects elsewhere, and yet there is no available data or analysis to help us understand the reasons behind such failures. This book provides an authoritative examination into why very large projects in Nigeria have failed so badly, and provides practical recommendations on how the Nigerian government can improve its project performance. Drawing on data from 38 very large projects (19 completed and 19 abandoned) with a total budget of over $25B, this book presents detailed analysis of these projects and in-depth case studies 11 of the projects, and presents lessons for improvement. Through this, the authors have identified a small number of key success drivers, and argue that making moderate improvements on any of them would, on average, save hundreds of millions of dollars on one large project alone. This book is a game-changer in the management of government mega projects in Nigeria. With clear implications for other developing economies, this is a vital resource for project management practitioners, executives and civil servants. This is an open access book.

Celine Louche, Tessa Hebb
R3,668 Discovery Miles 36 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The history of modern Socially Responsible Investment began with the Apartheid crisis in South Africa in the 1970s. When asked if divestment played a role in ending South African Apartheid, Nelson Mandela answered "undoubtedly". But what about SRI in the 21st century, does it make a difference for society? The first part of this book explores the innovative approach of socially responsible investors in building engagement approaches, mobilizing networks, developing new products, and proposing alternative models showing the potential to create change. The second part interrogates the limits of SRI in making a difference. It questions the potential of SRI to create change but also proposes ways to increase societal impacts of SRI. The last section of the volume addresses the boarder issues of values and governance and shows how they are central in the SRI discussion. The book takes a critical but constructive stance on SRI with the objective of contributing to the capacity and ability of SRI to make a difference. Little research has been undertaken on the societal impacts of SRI. With this book we contribute to this debate, pushing the boundaries of SRI even further.

Finance and Sustainability - Towards a New Paradigm? A Post-crisis Agenda (Hardcover): William Sun, Celine Louche, Roland Perez Finance and Sustainability - Towards a New Paradigm? A Post-crisis Agenda (Hardcover)
William Sun, Celine Louche, Roland Perez; Series edited by William Sun
R4,145 Discovery Miles 41 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The recent global financial crisis has indicated that the conventional dominant paradigm in finance is unable to cope with the problems of financial systems, markets, and behaviour of financial institutions, and failed to understand the proper role of finance in society and the economic system as a whole. Drawing on the recent movements of corporate social responsibility, socially responsible investing and sustainable development, this volume goes further to examine the ongoing making of financial reality towards social responsibility and sustainability, and aims at a better understanding of finance as a collective construct and endeavour embedded in societal context. Bringing together leading scholarly thinking, this collection opens new avenues of comprehending corporate social responsibility, reveals mechanisms and strategies in shaping the reality of responsible finance, searches alternative approaches towards financial sustainability, and explores new thinking of coping with complex financial choice and financial risks. Moving away from the conventional financial paradigm, this volume demonstrates paradigm shifting in the financial world and provides fresh insights on how we may reshape the financial reality to enable societal betterment and prevent any future financial crisis.

Bombs, Bugs, Drugs, and Thugs - Intelligence and America's Quest for Security (Paperback, New Ed): Loch K. Johnson Bombs, Bugs, Drugs, and Thugs - Intelligence and America's Quest for Security (Paperback, New Ed)
Loch K. Johnson
R800 Discovery Miles 8 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"An eye-opening account of our intelligence establishment."
--"Library Journal"

"An outstanding book, clearly the best recent, up-to-date survey of the American intelligence community, ranking with the top half-dozen ever."
"--H. Bradford Westerfield, Yale University"

Recent years have seen numerous books about the looming threat posed to Western society by biological and chemical terrorism, by narcoterrorists, and by the unpredictable leaders of rogue nations. Some of these works have been alarmist. Some have been sensible and measured. But none has been by Loch Johnson.

Johnson, author of the acclaimed "Secret Agencies "and "an experienced overseer of intelligence" ("Foreign Affairs"), here examines the present state and future challenges of American strategic intelligence. Written in his trademark style--dubbed "highly readable" by "Publishers Weekly"--and drawing on dozens of personal interviews and contacts, Johnson takes advantage of his insider access to explore how America today aspires to achieve nothing less than "global transparency," ferreting out information on potential dangers in every corner of the world.

And yet the American security establishment, for all its formidable resources, technology, and networks, currently remains a loose federation of individual fortresses, rather than a well integrated "community" of agencies working together to provide the President with accurate information on foreign threats and opportunities. Intelligence failure, like the misidentified Chinese embassy in Belgrade accidentally bombed by a NATO pilot, is the inevitable outcome when the nation's thirteen secret agencies steadfastly resist the need for centralcoordination.

Ranging widely and boldly over such controversial topics as the intelligence role of the United Nations (which Johnson believes should be expanded) and whether assassination should be a part of America's foreign policy (an option he rejects for fear that the U.S. would then be cast not only as global policeman but also as global godfather), Loch K. Johnson here maps out a critical "and" prescriptive vision of the future of American intelligence.

Simulation is the fastest developing branch of geostatistics and simulating facies inside reservoirs and orebodies is the most exciting part of this. Several methods have been developed to do this (sequential indicator simulations, Boolean simulations, Markov chains and plurigaussian simulations). This book focuses on the last type of simulations. It presents the theory required to understand the method, along practical examples of applications in mining and the oil industry as well as tutorial exercises. Demonstration software to illustrate how these simulations work is available on http://pluridemo.geosciences.mines-paristech.fr Since the publication of the first edition, enormous numbers of papers have appeared in the literature on the subject. Plurigaussian simulations are now the preferred method for simulating facies in both mining & the oil industry. The new edition contains new case studies in both mining & petroleum, together with an extensively updated theory section.

The Behavioral Consequences of Stroke (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Tom A. Schweizer, R.Loch Macdonald The Behavioral Consequences of Stroke (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Tom A. Schweizer, R.Loch Macdonald
R5,961 Discovery Miles 59 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A comprehensive, state-of-the-art contribution to a field that is rapidly developing, "The Behavioral Consequences of Stroke" provides a broad overview of the cognitive and neurobehavioral effects of stroke. As attention to paralysis and the more obvious physical disabilities stroke patients incur expands, greater attention is being paid today to the cognitive and neurobehavioral complications that impact stroke morbidity and even functional neurological recovery in patients. Written by an international panel of experts and edited by a neurosurgeon and by a cognitive neuroscientist, this unique title addresses the full range of issues relevant to the field, including epidemiology, general treatment, sensorimotor control after stroke, post-stroke aphasia, memory loss after stroke, post-stroke depression, the role of imaging after a stroke, and an update on some stroke clinical trials, to name just some of the areas covered.

Illuminative and an influential addition to the literature, "The Behavioral Consequences of Stroke" will serve as an invaluable resource for neurologsits, neurosurgeons, physiatrists and other physicians, as well as physical, speech and occupational therapists, nurses, psychologists, and other professionals. Stylianos Kavadias, Christoph H. Loch
R2,916 Discovery Miles 29 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Project Selection Under Uncertainty is the result of a five-year research program on the selection of projects in New Product Development (NPD). Choosing the New Product Development portfolio is of critical importance in today's business environment. The NPD portfolio has considerable strategic effect on the "middle term" success of a business. This book takes a step in developing a theory that addresses the need for quantitative prioritization criteria within the broader strategic context of the R&D portfolios. Its foundation lies in mathematical theory of resource-constrained optimization with the goal to maximize quantitative returns. The book seeks to broaden the portfolio discussion in two ways. First, simplified models - appropriate for the data-poor NPD context - are developed, which attempt to illuminate the structure of the choice problem and robust qualitative rules of thumb, rather than detailed algorithmic decision support. Such robust rules can be applied in the R&D environment of poor data availability. Second, the annual portfolio review is not the only important choice in resource allocation. In addition, the book discusses how ideas might be pre-screened as they emerge, and how projects should be prioritized once they are funded and ongoing.

Theory and Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Samuel O. Idowu, Celine Louche Theory and Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Samuel O. Idowu, Celine Louche
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our experiences of life have enabled us to understand that new times create new problems and perhaps new opportunities as well for those who can spot them. Some fifty or so years ago, issues relating to global warming, environmental pollution, terrorism, human rights abuses and a host of other social and environmental problems that are of concern for us today were not of too much of concern to us. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the problems future generations of man would face in 50 years time would certainly be dissimilar to the problems of our time In order to ensure that man's future situations are not unnecessarily made more problematic and unbearable than they need be, the present generation must ensure that they embed in all their many activities socially responsible behaviours. This was the goal of this book. After all, today's CSR students are tomorrow's managers, politicians, opinion leaders, customers, suppliers, social activists etc. Taking all the issues explored in the fourteen chapters of Theory and Practice of Corporate Social Responsibility direct to these leaders of tomorrow was an attempt to begin a journey which would help us to achieve this goal. It is hoped that this book has successfully set the scene for socially responsible behaviours to thrive in our world.
