Democracy is being destroyed. This is a crisis that expresses itself in the rising authoritarianism visible in divisive and exclusionary politics, populist political parties and movements, increased distrust in fact-based information and news, and the withering accountability of state institutions. What is less obvious is that the sources of the democratic rot are integral to the systemic crisis generated by neoliberal capitalism, which assigns economic metrics to all aspects of life. In other words, the crisis of democracy is the political crisis of neoliberal capitalism. Over the last four decades, democracy has radically shifted to a market democracy in which all aspects of human, non-human and planetary life are commodified, with corporations becoming more powerful than states and their citizens.
Volume six of the Democratic Marxism series focuses on how decades of neoliberal capitalism have eroded the global democratic project and how, in the process, authoritarian politics are gaining ground. Scholars and activists from the left focus on four country cases – India, Brazil, South Africa and the United States of America – in which the COVID-19 pandemic has fuelled and highlighted the pre-existing crisis. They interrogate issues of politics, ecology, state security, media, access to information and political parties, and affirm the need to reclaim and re-build an expansive and inclusive democracy.
Destroying Democracy is an invaluable resource for the general public, activists, scholars and students who are interested in understanding the threats to democracy and the rising tide of authoritarianism in the global global South and global North.
The North Fork's natural riches have been seducing people for more
than four hundred years. The Algonquin Indians -and, later, Dutch
and English colonists- first recognized the area for its waters
rich with clams and fish, its fertile soil for growing crops and
its abundant forests to support shipbuilding. Hearing the ocean's
call, many have long admired the inlets, creeks and bays and
contrast the ruggedness of the Long Island Sound with the
tranquility of Peconic Bay. In this pictorial history, local author
Rosemary McKinley showcases the nautical history, idyllic seaside
settings and lush landscapes of this picturesque country.

A magical tale from the author of The Wishkeeper’s Apprentice,
with gorgeous black-and-white illustrations throughout. Where will
the magic take you? When Magician Winnifred’s enchanted house
gets stuck upside down in ten-year-old Callie’s garden, the pair
strike up an unlikely friendship – until Winnifred realizes that
it is Callie’s intense homesickness that is causing her magic to
malfunction. Now all of Winnifred’s most precious magical
possessions are unprotected. Can Callie and Winnifred restore the
Wanderdust before malicious pixies and dangerous giants steal
everything?
Friendship wins the day in this fabulously funny quarrel! Two frogs
sit on an ordinary little rock. But . . . uh-oh! Both frogs think
it's their rock - and they really don't want to share! The frogs
fight and squabble furiously. But when a hungry heron swoops down,
both frogs realise it's time to find another rock . . . together!
Kaye Umansky's brilliantly simple rhyming story shows how two
grumpy frogs go from fighting . . . to friendship (with lots of
laughter along the way.) Alice McKinley's hilarious illustrations
bring to life every twist and turn of this wonderfully witty little
drama. Written in absolutely perfect rhyme, this story is a joy to
read aloud. Every parent and child will identify with these
squabbling frogs. An excellent (and very funny) lesson in how to
resolve a quarrel! Kaye Umansky is one of the UK's best-loved
children's authors. She is a brilliant comic writer, and is the
award-winning creator of the bestselling Pongwiffy fiction series.
Her superb rhyming picture books have echoes of Dr Seuss. Alice
McKinley's illustrations are full of warmth and humour, and packed
with clever details to spot.
Sometimes there comes a time in life when you must move to a
different place. In Let silence be the stranger, the author Larry
McKinley explores this move, and life in general, in the form of
short stories developed from a simple thought developing a deeper
emotion. Stories ment to celebrate life, past present and future,
not to condemn i

aeons ago by a civilisation mighty and wise. Locked in a race with
a rival engineer, Trassan Kressind's great iron ship crosses
uncharted seas. The City of Ice promises the secrets of the
ancients to whomever can reach it first. It may prove too little
knowledge too late, for the closest approach of the Twin in 4000
years draws near, an event that has heralded terrible destruction
in past ages. As the Kressind siblings pursue their fortunes, the
world stands upon the dawn of a new era, but may yet be consumed by
a darkness from the past. Industry and magic, gods and steampower
collide in the epic sequel to The Iron Ship.
