Cases and Materials on the Law of International Organizations (Paperback): William Thomas Worster Cases and Materials on the Law of International Organizations (Paperback)
William Thomas Worster
R1,021 Discovery Miles 10 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In less than 100 years, international organizations have evolved from curiosities into keystones of international law. What began long ago as an unremarkable effort to coordinate a limited number of technical issues has grown into a global, multilevel, blended governing project with diverse competences in most fields of human endeavor and interests. Law graduates who enter the field of international law, as well as political science, international relations, and diplomacy, are increasingly expected to have a strong knowledge of the law of international organizations. Beyond knowledge, graduates are also expected to be able to solve new emerging legal problems confronting organizations. This book introduces students to the law of international organizations through the careful study of the most recent cases and other materials from the International Court of Justice, United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, World Trade Organization, international criminal tribunals, European Union, European Court of Human Rights, International Labour Organization, various domestic courts and arbitral panels, and other bodies. In doing so, it undertakes a critical examination of legal rights and duties, exposing the fundamental questions that arise when addressing a range of issues within an organization. In order to provide the best foundation, the textbook focuses on several key topics: the law of treaties, creation of organizations, membership, powers of organizations, legal effects of their acts, organs, immunities, and responsibility. This book is best suited for students who are studying international organizations and who have already had one or more courses on international and/or European law.

William J. Dominik, William Thomas Wehrle
R1,115 Discovery Miles 11 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

-- Introduction

-- Latin text with facing English translation

-- Notes keyed to English translations

-- Index of names

Satura quidem tota nostra est (Satire is altogether ours) was the claim of the Roman Quintilian, the first century C.E. commentator on rhetorical and literary matters, for the literary world had not previously seen the likes of satire.

This edition provides introduction to Roman verse satire for the English reader and aid to the Latin student in understanding these challenging, sometimes obscure texts. Lucilius, Horace, Persius, and Juvenal are equally represented, in an attempt to redress a tendency in other anthologies to favor Horace and Juvenal.

Jewel in the Crown - Bonnie Cone and the Founding of UNC Charlotte (Paperback): William Thomas Jeffers, Jessica Injejikian Jewel in the Crown - Bonnie Cone and the Founding of UNC Charlotte (Paperback)
William Thomas Jeffers, Jessica Injejikian
R470 Discovery Miles 4 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jewel in the Crown: Bonnie Cone and the Founding of UNC Charlotte chronicles the postwar development of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from a temporary night school for returning veterans into a college, and eventually the fourth campus in the UNC system. With no public college or university within 90 miles of Charlotte, the need for greater opportunities for higher education in the region was clear--although the path forward to achieve that goal was not. Cone led the effort to engage the business community, government officials, and the general public to support the development of the institution, while convincing distinguished faculty from around the country to be part of this new endeavor. Drawing heavily from oral history interviews with Cone and many who knew her, the book highlights the personal qualities of persuasiveness, perseverance, and vision that gave her the ability to lead the effort culminating in this incredible achievement. Always an educator at heart, Cone never lost sight of the fundamental purpose in establishing the university: to provide opportunities for students and challenge them to achieve their goals. A foreword by UNC Charlotte alumnus Michael L. Wilson, who went on to lead the Board of Trustees, provides a first-hand account of Cone's inspiration and influence on students.

The Georgia Peach - Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South (Paperback): William Thomas Okie The Georgia Peach - Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South (Paperback)
William Thomas Okie
R826 Discovery Miles 8 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Imprinted on license plates, plastered on billboards, stamped on the tail side of the state quarter, and inscribed on the state map, the peach is easily Georgia's most visible symbol. Yet Prunus persica itself is surprisingly rare in Georgia, and it has never been central to the southern agricultural economy. Why, then, have southerners - and Georgians in particular - clung to the fruit? The Georgia Peach: Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South shows that the peach emerged as a viable commodity at a moment when the South was desperate for a reputation makeover. This agricultural success made the fruit an enduring cultural icon despite the increasing difficulties of growing it. A delectable contribution to the renaissance in food writing, The Georgia Peach will be of great interest to connoisseurs of food, southern, environmental, rural, and agricultural history.

Sweet Pea at War - A History of USS Portland (Paperback, New edition): William Thomas Generous Sweet Pea at War - A History of USS Portland (Paperback, New edition)
William Thomas Generous
R838 Discovery Miles 8 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Few ships in American history have had as illustrious a history as the heavy cruiser USS Portland (CA-33), affectionately known by her crew as 'Sweet Pea.' With the destructionof most of the U.S. battleship fleet at Pearl Harbor, cruisers such as Sweet Pea carried the biggest guns the Navy possessed for nearly a year after the start of World War II. Sweet Pea at War describes in harrowing detail how Portland and her sisters protected the precious carriers and held the line against overwhelming Japanese naval strength. Portland was instrumental in the dramatic American victories at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, and the naval battle of Guadalcanal--conflicts that historians regard as turning points in the Pacific war. She rescued nearly three thousand sailors from sunken ships, some of them while she herself was badly damaged. Only a colossal hurricane ended her career, but she sailed home from that, too. Based on extensive research in official documents and interviews with members of the ship's crew, Sweet Pea at War recounts from launching to scrapping the history of USS Portland, demonstrating that she deserves to be remembered as one of the most important ships in U.S. naval history.

Giosofat Barbaro; Edited by Henry Edward John Stanley, Charles Grey; Translated by William Thomas, Eugene Armand Roy
R1,258 Discovery Miles 12 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This volume contains six narratives by Venetian diplomats of travel to Persia in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Barbaro's account is given in a sixteenth-century translation; the others were made for this edition. These stories of travel, by land and by sea, to distant destinations are full of engaging detail about the customs of the countries visited, and also about the negotiations by which the Venetian Signoria and Uzun Hassan, the ruler of Persia, tried to form an alliance against the Ottoman Turks.

Indicators of Environmental Quality - Proceedings of a symposium held during the AAAS meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 26-31, 1971 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1972)
William Thomas
R1,551 Discovery Miles 15 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Researchers and agencies collect reams of objective data and authors publish volumes of subjective prose in attempts to explain what is meant by environmental quality. Still, we have no universally recognized methods for combining our quantitative measures with our qualitative concepts of environ ment. Not all of our environmental goals should be reduced to mere numbers, but many of them can be; and without these quantitative terms, we have no way of defining our present position nor of selecting positions we wish to attain on any logically established scale of environmental values. Stated simply, in our zeal to measure our environment we often forget that masses of numbers describing a system are insufficient to understand it or to be used in selecting goals and priorities for expending our economic and human resources. Attempts at quantitatively describing environmental quality, rather than merely measuring different environmental variables, are relatively recent. This condensing of data into the optimum number of terms with maximum information content is a truly interdisciplinary challenge. When Oak Ridge National Laboratory initiated its Environmental Program in early 1970 under a grant from the National Science Foundation, the usefulness of environmental indicators in assessing the effects of technology was included as one of the initial areas for investigation. James L. Liverman, through his encouragement and firm belief that these indicators are indispensable if we are to resolve our complex environmental problems, deserves much of the credit for the publication of this book."

Browse's Introduction to the Investigation and Management of Surgical Disease (Paperback, New): Norman Browse, John Black,... Browse's Introduction to the Investigation and Management of Surgical Disease (Paperback, New)
Norman Browse, John Black, Kevin Burnand, Steven Corbett, William Thomas
R1,551 Discovery Miles 15 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The long-awaited companion to the award-winning Browse's Introduction to the Symptoms and Signs of Surgical Disease; this book explains clearly how the pathological features and extent of the disease dictate the necessary diagnostic investigations and treatment. Each chapter will include 3 sections: (1) Relevant Pathology - a brief description of the important pathological features of the disease relevant to the clinical diagnosis, the investigations and treatment. (2) Investigations - covering significant diagnostic clinical findings; radiological, biochemical, haematological, immunological, and pathological investigations, and genetics. The relevance of the investigations will be clearly defined, whether they confirm the diagnosis, or detect the local extent of the disease, the distant spread of the disease, or other systemic effects of the disease. The work will also cover investigations for detecting other diseases relevant to management; and investigations that help exclude confusing differential diagnoses. (3) Treatment - to review all aspects of management; this section will summarize the diagnostic information required to plan management: it will describe each method of treatment available, discuss the indications for each treatment, describe any special preparation and pre-treatment care, any post-treatment care and the complications of treatment, enumerate the results of treatment, and provide a management plan. The 2-book set will provide all the information necessary for the clinical years of undergraduate study, through to surgery at foundation years 1 and 2, planning for the MRCS exams, and beyond.
