This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization,
and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural
programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political
changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the
~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition
on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field
of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus
clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An
informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a
retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third
workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to
recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop
(1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in
compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its
accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last
workshop was requested by its participants to take place during
1993 September 19-25.
William A. Holmes has written "The God Mask" as a companion volume
to his book, "Mature Christianity" published in 2010 with
endorsements by Jim Lehrer of the News Hour, U.S. Senator George
McGovern (Rtd), Bishop Susan Morrison (Rtd.), and Dr. Philip
Wogaman (Rtd.), Wesley Theological Seminary. In the introduction to
"The God Mask" Holmes says: From the most primitive of tribes to
the most sophisticated and developed of societies, human beings
show a nearly universal propensity to disguise themselves with
masks - literally or by way of facial expressions. And, such masks
both conceal and reveal the identity of those who wear them.
Following a fascinating discussion in Chapter I on the role of
masks, he takes the reader into a "Mystery" both concealed and
revealed - a "Mystery" whose disguises he has pondered most of his
life and to which traditionally we point with the symbolic letters:
"G" "O" "D." The chapters unfold in the context of a hazardous
adventure employing the metaphor of a "Safari to the Sacred" and
drawing on the wisdom of certain "guides" along the way. We find
ourselves in the company of Mother Teresa, Trudy, the "Bag Lady,"
David Hume, Joseph Wesley Mathews and a number of Jesus Seminar
Scholars. After leaps across crevices, entertaining unexpected
strangers and posting guards against "poachers," the safari moves
well beyond theological abstractions into risk-filled realms of
human encounters. We enter areas of certain danger - social,
political and economic - where radical caring is required and where
"life in Christ" means "being God's love in the world." What once
seemed hidden is now revealed with a white-hot clarity which is
almost more than we can bear. In his final chapters Holmes moves
his readers beyond the theological awe he has engendered to
consider how "being God's love in the world" calls them to address
the innocent human suffering around them through many praxes. He
illustrates this with reference to historic and contemporary
movements of our time and organizations that engage "The Faithful"
in meaningful service.
"Principles of Modern Radar: Basic Principles" is a comprehensive
and modern textbook for courses in radar systems and technology at
the college senior and graduate student level; a professional
training textbook for formal in-house courses for new hires; a
reference for ongoing study following a radar short course; and a
self-study and professional reference book. "Principles of Modern
Radar" focuses on four key areas: Basic concepts, such as the the
radar range equation and threshold detection; radar signal
phenomenology, such as radar cross section models, clutter,
atmospheric effects, and Doppler effects; descriptions of all major
subsystems of modern radars, such as the antenna, transmitter,
receiver, including modern architectural elements such as exciters,
and advanced signal processors; and signal and data processing
basics, from digital signal processing (DSP) fundamentals, through
detection, Doppler processing, waveforms and pulse compression,
basic imaging concepts, and tracking fundamentals. While several
established books address introductory radar systems, "Principles
of Modern Radar" differs from these in its breadth of coverage, its
emphasis on current methods (without losing sight of bedrock
principles), and its adoption of an appropriate level of
quantitative rigor for the intended audience of students and new
professional hires. The manuscript for this book was reviewed by
over 50 professionals in academia, military, and commercial
enterprises. These reviewers were among thousands of potential
users approached by the publisher and asked to share their
expertise and experience in radar training and instruction. Their
extensive comments, corrections, and insights ensure that
"Principles of Modern Radar" will meet the needs of modern radar
educators and students around the world. Written and edited by
world-renowned radar instructors and critically reviewed by users
before publication, this is truly a radar community-driven book.
Mature Christianity: For come-of-age Christians in a come-of-age
World by Dr. William A. Holmes, is a book for Christians and those
who want to understand the Christian faith in the 21st century
modern world according to Jim Lahrer of the NewsHour. It is both
spiritually and intellectually challenging says George McGovern,
U.S. Senator (Ret.) by an author who is both an admired and
prophetic voice in our land. It calls for a new honesty with
ourselves in this new age of maturity and provides a way for us to
articulate and live our faith with integrity, says Susan Morrison,
Bishop of the United Methodist Church (Ret.). This author is
unafraid to tackle the hot issues of our times adds J. Philip
Wogaman, former Dean and Professor of Christian Ethics at Wesley
Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
John L. Epps has written "The Theology of Surprise" as a collection
of essays, articles and reflections over a life time of his own
encounters with life's mysteries. Through several decades he
reflects on where mystery has impinged on his life as he sees it,
part and parcel of the civilizing process around him. In the
Foreword to "The Theology of Surprise: Exploring Life's Mysteries"
William A. Holmes, Minister Emeritus of United Methodism's National
Church in Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Memorial says: "The
Theology of Surprise: Exploring Life's Mysteries.."..A book of
essays on different subjects by the same author can be off-putting
if that's all the subjects have in common. What one soon discovers
in this book is that, for all its diversity of subjects, there is a
bright thread running through John Epps' essays which connects
them, not only to each other, but to an all-encompassing
theological perspective. Without apology, that perspective is
derived from the Judeo-Christian tradition - albeit existentially
contemporized for persons living in a 21st Century world.. "If you
are religious because you treasure "eternal verities," if you are
happy that "on solid rock I stand," this book is probably not for
you. But...if you are humble enough to lay your faith down before
the Mystery of Life.... If you are unfulfilled by dogmatic
certainties calcified in archaic language, you will benefit greatly
by Epps' observations about theological surprise." Dr. E. Maynard
Moore, WesleyNexus.org. "The challenges facing the planet are known
to us all. The clash amongst cultures, the persistence of hunger
and disease, the apparent poverty of every political system in
operation today, the overwhelming complexity of unraveling the
damage that we humans have inflicted on our home, this planet: we
are in an age of agonizing quandary...Here you will find theology
being reinvented for now and the future. The work of this deeply
grounded thinker is profoundly respectful of the entire array of
religious traditions. Epps is convinced that we can invent a future
that cares for all." John Patterson, Abby Gardens Community Trust.
"Every Sunday I go to church and wonder why I am there. The words,
hymns, creeds, and stories I learned with my mother's milk are
often more of a hindrance to participation than an inspiration...I
think restatement of faith is the challenge of our time, for those
of us both in and out of the pew. I know John Epps to be uncommonly
thoughtful, with broad life experience." Louise Singleton, MSPH,
HIV/AIDS Prevention.
