Non-integrable Dynamics: Time-quantitative Results: Jozsef Beck, William Chen, Yuxuan Yang Non-integrable Dynamics: Time-quantitative Results
Jozsef Beck, William Chen, Yuxuan Yang
R3,761 Discovery Miles 37 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The subject of this monograph is to describe orbits of slowly chaotic motion. The study of geodesic flow in the unit torus is motivated by the irrational rotation sequence, where the most outstanding result is the Kronecker-Weyl equidistribution theorem and its time-quantitative enhancements, including superuniformity. Another important result is the Khinchin density theorem on superdensity, a best possible form of time-quantitative density. The purpose of this monograph is to extend these classical time-quantitative results to some non-integrable flat dynamical systems. The theory of dynamical systems is on the most part about the qualitative behavior of typical orbits and not about individual orbits. Thus, our study deviates from, and indeed is in complete contrast to, what is considered the mainstream research in dynamical systems. We establish non-trivial results concerning explicit individual orbits and describe their long-term behavior in a precise time-quantitative way. Our non-ergodic approach gives rise to a few new methods. These are based on a combination of ideas in combinatorics, number theory, geometry and linear algebra.Approximately half of this monograph is devoted to a time-quantitative study of two concrete simple non-integrable flat dynamical systems. The first concerns billiard in the L-shape region which is equivalent to geodesic flow on the L-surface. The second concerns geodesic flow on the surface of the unit cube. In each, we give a complete description of time-quantitative equidistribution for every geodesic with a quadratic irrational slope.

Ronald Sahyouni, Nolan Brown, Jefferson William Chen
R2,407 Discovery Miles 24 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book aims to present, educate and inform individuals about Alzheimer's disease in a comprehensive manner. Its scope ranges from the discovery of the disease, epidemiology and basic biological principles underlying it, to advanced stem cell therapies used in the treatment of Alzheimer's. It adopts a 'global' perspective on Alzheimer's disease, and include epidemiological data and science from countries around the world.Alzheimer's disease is a rapidly growing problem seen in every country around the world. This is the first and only comprehensive book to cover Alzheimer's disease, and includes the most updated literature and scientific progress in the field of dementia and Alzheimer's disease research. Most books on the market that focus on Alzheimer's disease are targeted at caregivers as practical advice on how to deal with loved ones with the disease. This book instead is a comprehensive and popular science book that can be read by anyone with an interest in learning more about the disease.Dr Jefferson Chen MD, PhD, co-author, participated in the world's first surgical clinical trial using shunts to treat Alzheimer's disease. His first-hand involvement in a clinical trial for patients with Alzheimer's disease and experience treating Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) which is commonly misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease lends a unique perspective. This book with appeal to a wide audience, regardless of their scientific or educational background.

CRC Handbook of Tables for Order Statistics from Inverse Gaussian Distributions with Applications (Paperback): N. Balakrishnan,... CRC Handbook of Tables for Order Statistics from Inverse Gaussian Distributions with Applications (Paperback)
N. Balakrishnan, William Chen
R1,925 Discovery Miles 19 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First derived within the context of life-testing, inverse Gaussian distribution has become one of the most important and widely employed distributions, and is often used to model the lifetimes of components. It is also used as a model in many varied applications, including fatigue analysis, economic prediction analysis, and the analysis of extreme events such as rainfall and flood levels. The interesting features and properties of this distribution make it an important and realistic model in a variety of problems across numerous disciplines. Because of the broad range of applications, this handbook will be useful not only to members of the statistical community but will also appeal to applied scientists, engineers, econometricians, and anyone who desires a thorough evaluation of this important topic.

A Panorama of Discrepancy Theory (Paperback, 2014 ed.): William Chen, Anand Srivastav, Giancarlo Travaglini A Panorama of Discrepancy Theory (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
William Chen, Anand Srivastav, Giancarlo Travaglini
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first work on Discrepancy Theory to show the present variety of points of view and applications covering the areas Classical and Geometric Discrepancy Theory, Combinatorial Discrepancy Theory and Applications and Constructions. It consists of several chapters, written by experts in their respective fields and focusing on the different aspects of the theory.

Discrepancy theory concerns the problem of replacing a continuous object with a discrete sampling and is currently located at the crossroads of number theory, combinatorics, Fourier analysis, algorithms and complexity, probability theory and numerical analysis. This book presents an invitation to researchers and students to explore the different methods and is meant to motivate interdisciplinary research.
