A blending of the history and folklore of southern New Jersey create the background for the Barren Spirit, and the phenomenon of hypnotic regression into previous lives creates the story. Intertwined throughout the story are tales of a real pineland folk hero, Joe Mulliner. Several of these tales are actual folk tales with a new twist, some are teeming with historical fact, some are legends and others are pure fiction. In this tale, four college students, three boys and a girl become uncontrollably compelled to travel to the barren pine forests of New Jersey in search of an answer. The question in need of that answer comes in the form of a foreign apparition, encountered during their experimentation with hypnosis. When they reach the secluded Pine Barrens, they are befriended by a local resident who joins them in their search for this mysterious truth. Who would have imagined that their innocent search could lead them down such a dangerous and deadly path?
Life in the small, placid town seems normally uneventful except for the drownings. Not only are they unusually excessive, but they almost appear to go unnoticed. When that fact is questioned, unpleasant answers are revealed, and the truth, which manifests itself as a vortex that is ruthlessly devouring the sleepy town, remains undetectable to all but a select few suffering souls.
Unfathomable riches, the promise of adventure and a crusty pirate named Captain Moses Plank lure Charles "Cherry" Pie and his friend Willy to a mysterious, uncharted island where they encounter more than expected. Exotic and unusual inhabitants seem to turn up at every turn offering, at times wisdom, at times danger, and at times refuge. So goes this tale, reportedly from the turn of the last century and handed down from generation to generation. It is a playful and intriguing story filled with surprises and emotion, with a hint of reality that is not to be taken too seriously.
With the fear that his Grandfather's memories would be forgotten the narrator, an old man and grandfather himself, repeats the detailed stories just as they had been told to him when he was a boy. In this story, Cherry and his friend Willy are headed out west to save Willy's family from despair and losing everything they have worked so hard for. Cherry and Willy finally make it to the ranch after some risky setbacks and quickly realize the problems at the ranch are much bigger than they expected. When the cattle go missing off the ranch and someone close to them is kidnapped Cherry and Willy are determined to get to the bottom of it. With the help of the Marshall and a Prospector the escapade begins. Nothing is quite what it seems on this Wild West adventure. Magic trails and ghosts are just some of the things that make you wonder if they will get out alive. Will they be heroes or will they get lost on the trail to nowhere?
The creation of a race of superhumans is the object of the project. The group of scientists are just begining to realize success when things go awry. One subject decides to take revenge on those he feels have stolen his life from him. A struggle between good and evil ensues with a surpising twist at the end.
