In this insightful analysis of public school policy, including No Child Left Behind, William E. Smith offers a unique perspective he has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; served in several administrative roles, including principal of an impoverished, rural K-5 school and a K-12 laboratory school; and been a teacher educator and educational scholar, before returning to the classroom. In Restoring Honor to Public Schools: A Teacher's Vision for American Education, Smith draws upon thirty years of experience in varied roles to provide an insider's look at teaching and learning. With clear and uncompromising analysis, he assesses the real impact of politics and educational policymaking on our children's lives. Smith provides thoughtful and achievable recommendations for honoring teachers and teaching and restoring civility and intelligence to our nation's discourse about education.
Over the last two decades a major focus of organization theory has been on understanding the dynamic relationships between individuals, organizations and their environments. This interest in dynamics, illustrated by systems, chaos, and complexity theory, is recorded in the works of Ackoff, Senge, and Stacey. This focus offers a new viewpoint on holism for practicing leaders and theorists today. Building on this interest, Smith's original text presents a new philosophical lens for helping leaders see the advantages of a more holistic approach to improving organizations. Specifically he:
Developed and tested via his work for organizations including the World Bank, this revolutionary book will change the way organizations and individuals work. William E. Smith Ph.D. is a Director of Organizing for Development an International Institute (ODII).
The Management of Scientific Integrity within Academic Medical Centers discusses the impact scientific misconduct has in eight complex case studies. Authors look at multifaceted mixtures of improper behavior, poor communication, cultural issues, adverse medical/health issues, interpersonal problems and misunderstandings to illustrate the challenge of identifying and managing what went wrong and how current policies have led to the establishment of quasi legal processes within academic institutions. The book reviews the current global regulations and concludes with a section authored by a US federal court judge who provides his perspective on the adequacy of current regulations and policies.

Merriam Press Military Memoir ME1. First Edition (2014). The history of D-Day on Omaha Red is not complete without this book. Capt. William C. Smith Jr. was the first man on Omaha Red two hours before the invasion. For his service, he received a Bronze Star with V for valor. He has also been inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. His story explains how the invasion was different from those of North Africa and Sicily. It also describes in detail how he and the other nine men trained for this most difficult and dangerous job-calling fire from the Navy ships against the German defenses on that fateful day that changed history forever. But this work also brings the relationships between soldiers to life with humor and a depth of emotion seldom described in other works. It is so powerful because it is told in first person by the man that lived through the four and a half years of World War II. It was written from more than 100 hours of interviews by the authors. The work begins from the 1st Division's invasion of North Africa and continues through the breach of the German border. It includes the struggles of the wives and families that were left behind waiting for their loved ones to return from Europe. Unlike so many histories, this work also details the unique bond between soldiers that forms from mutual dependence. Captain Smith's relationship with his driver and close friend Sampson gives the work the humanity missing from other memoirs. This was a story that had to be told, and now it has so that we may better understand the sacrifices these men made in the name of liberty.
