British-Turkish relations were transformed in the first half of the
20th century, from a state of belligerence during the First World
War, through a period of heated confrontation over the fate of
Mosul and trade and business access to the new Republic of Turkey,
to rapprochement and financial cooperation in the 1930s, and
finally a formal military alliance under the auspices of the North
Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The edited collection provides a
selection of important chapters by senior and early-career scholars
from Britain, Turkey, and the wider world. The chapters use new
sources to address issues as diverse as the Turkey-Iraq frontier,
colonial governance in Cyprus, the legal rights of foreigners in
Istanbul, commercial relations through the era of the Great
Depression, contested neutrality in the Second World War, and the
search for new alliances in the Cold War. Knowledge of this
tumultuous transition and its impact on public memory is key to
understanding points of tension and cohesion in present-day
UK-Turkey relations. The chapters in this book were originally
published in the journals Middle Eastern Studies and the Journal of
Balkan and Near Eastern Studies.
This book outlines the evolution of policy and the course of
Turkey's economic development since the foundation of Turkey's
republic in 1923. Turkey is a fast-developing country with, over
the last seventy years, a radically transformed economic and social
structure. The concept of planned development was first applied as
long as fifty years ago, long before other such approaches in the
region. Furthermore, Turkey's post-war economic development has
proceeded in a rare environment of a predominantly liberal,
competitive political system. This book is the first comprehensive
and up-to-date study of Turkish economic development and its
relationship to political change. First published in 1981.

This revised and updated version of William Hale 's Turkish
Foreign Policy 1774-2000 offers a comprehensive and analytical
survey of Turkish foreign policy since the last quarter of the
eighteenth century, when the Turks relations with the rest of the
world entered their most critical phase.
In recent years Turkey 's international role has changed and
expanded quite dramatically, and the new edition revisits the
chapters and topics covered in light of these changes. Drawing on
newly available information and ideas, the author carefully alters
the earlier historical narrative while preserving the clarity and
accessibility of the original. Combining the long historical
perspective with a detailed survey and analysis of the most recent
developments, this book fills a clear gap in the literature on
Turkey 's modern history. For readers with a broader interest in
international history, it also offers a crucial example of how a
medium sized power has acted in the international environment.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) were elected to power in
2002 and since then Turkish politics has undergone considerable
change. This book is a comprehensive analysis of the AKP, in terms
not just of its ideological agenda, but also of its social basis
and performance in office in the main theatres of public policy --
political reform, and cultural, economic and foreign policies.
Based on an extensive analysis of official and party documents,
interviews, academic sources and media coverage, the book outlines
the main features of the current global debate on the relationship
between Islam, Islamism and democracy. While most top AKP leaders
come from an Islamist background, the party has behaved as a
moderate, centre-right, conservative democratic party who are fully
committed to democracy, a free market economy and Turkey's EU
membership. The book explores and analyses these changes in Turkish
politics, and provides coverage of the workings of the contemporary
Turkish political systems, policy and ideological issues that go to
the heart of Turkish identity. Filling a gap in the existing
Turkish and English literature on the subject, this book will be an
important contribution to Political Science, particularly the areas
of Turkish politics, Middle Eastern studies, Islamic studies and
comparative politics.

The role of the military in politics from the establishment of the Republic, through coups of the 1960s and 1980s, to disengagement from 1983 onwards. Argues that the army has in some ways been a force for stability and modernisation.
At a time when many governments in advanced or emerging markets are
embarking on some form of industrial policy and protectionism, this
book looks at how these policies have evolved in Turkey in
comparison with other emerging markets. Based on a
historical-institutional political economy framework the book
examines the main factors domestic and global contributing to the
rise, retreat and return of industrial policy in Turkey. It argues
that it is not the state's intervention to the market per se, but
uncertainty-amplifying interventions of the state because of its
weak capacity that conditioned the effectiveness of industrial
policy in Turkey. To this end, it also poses broader conceptual
questions of relevance to other emerging markets about the role of
the state in economic development.
