In the second edition of The Old North Field, Dr. William Lindsey
McDonald has captured the warmth and nostalgia of a Norman Rockwell
painting with his reminiscences of growing up in the heart of the
South. Whether he is remembering his mother's Iced Tea or the
gentle gathering of the women folk while Snapping Beans, you will
be taken along as he recalls a wonderful and warm past, one we all
wish we had experienced. The smoke from the neighbor's chimney
(Smoke in the Valley), and the glow of Christmas lights (The
Christmas Window) are all visions in your mind's eye, courtesy of
Dr. McDonald. Travel along with him as he tells of a time when
families and neighbors were close, when seasons held endearing
memories for a young boy who recalls Daffodils of March, old time
Boxwood trees (A Touch of Boxwood), and of how church on Sunday was
more than just preaching, but a source of a long forgotten and
almost extinct form of singing (The Sacred Harp). This edition is
also enhanced with the beautiful illustrations by his wife, Dorothy
Carter McDonald.
Paths In The Brier Patch "A nostalgic look at special things." It
has been said that one studies the past in order to understand the
future. It also can be said that one learns from the paths of
others through the uncertainties of today's complex living. Paths
In The Brier Patch presents nostalgic comments clarifying the past,
along with personality sketches of people, places, and things, all
based on Dr. McDonald's north-Alabama newspaper columns. This
journalism reflects his military background as an author/historian
and his active service both in World War II and the Korean War.
Complementing the author's military career and civilian perspective
is the exceptional realism of his wife's illustrative artistry
throughout the book. Whether the subject be The Girl on A Horse,
Poke Sallet, or Autumn In The Country, Paths In The Brier Patch is
certain to provide valued guideposts for one's own life on earth.
Information can be found on the pages of this newly revised and
expanded book about the first white settlers in this area. Rare and
hard to find facts such as lists of names of men who with
government land grants settled their families in Lauderdale County
and where. Filled with old pictures and photographs of paintings
done by Dorothy Carter McDonald, the author's wife, this book is
sure to please, inform and add to you knowledge base. Lore of the
River The Shoals of Long Ago is a great addition to a
history/genealogy collection or a fabulous start
Descended from early pioneers of Florence and Lauderdale County,
Alabama, the author, William Lindsey McDonald began collecting
historical information about the Muscle Shoals more than a half
century ago. This research has involved personal interviews with
Civil War veterans, former slaves, and descendants of both Native
Americans and families of the frontier who were among the first of
the European descendants to arrive in North Alabama. Over the
years, William Lindsey McDonald has worn many hats. As a World War
II and Korean War veteran, he is a retired Army Colonel, a retired
Chief of TVA's Budget and Cost Control Staff at the National
Fertilizer Development Center, and a retired minister of the United
Methodist Church. As a journalist and author, this is the most
recent of a number of his books that help to tell the story of the
Muscle Shoals
Florence City Historian, William Lindsey McDonald has made
available yet another treasured research piece of family and
community history. When Mr. McDonald's cousin Judi, who grew up a
distance away from the local area, first contacted him in 1977 with
an inquiry of family history, this detailed correspondence filled
with family historical documentation began. In The Judi Letters,
you will find historical research on many families that have passed
through and settled in Lauderdale County. But, more than that, you
will find the warm reminiscence and local flavor that Mr. McDonald
captures so well. You will become acquainted with the unique people
that settled in this area and hear their personal stories told as
only a seasoned storyteller like Mr. McDonald can. Some of the
families included in The Judi Letters: Strange, McCuan, Johnson,
Barnard, McDonald and many others. Notes from family bibles,
interviews, meticulous research and pictures are also included.
