Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Originally published in 1935, this book’s author was both a
nationalist and internationalist who believed that these positions
were complementary, not in conflict with each other. This concise
volume doesn’t merely discuss the significance of literature in
Scottish history but also charts that literary heritage. Examining
native and foreign influences from Ireland and Scandinavia, the
book also examines the role literature has played in the formation
of the national identity of Scotland.

Our computers and mobile devices do wonderful things for us. But
they also impose a burden, making it harder for us to focus, do our
best work, build strong relationships, and find the depth and
fulfillment we crave.
How to solve this problem? "Hamlet's BlackBerry" argues that we
just need a new way of thinking, an everyday philosophy for life
with screens. William Powers sets out to solve what he calls the
conundrum of connectedness. Reaching into the past--using his own
life as laboratory and object lesson--he draws on some of history's
most brilliant thinkers, from Plato to Shakespeare to Thoreau, to
demonstrate that digital connectedness serves us best when it's
balanced by its opposite, "disconnectedness." Lively, original, and
entertaining, "Hamlet's BlackBerry" will challenge you to rethink
your digital life.

An intimate and powerful account of living in Bolivia during a time
of crisis and change.
Long the obscure "Tibet of South America," Bolivia emerged as a
world flashpoint during the four years William Powers lived there
as an aid worker. CNN and the "New York Times" have shown images of
Aymara women in bowler hats standing down tanks; citizen protests
have ousted multinationals and two pro-globalization presidents. In
"A Natural Nation," Powers breathes life into the recent struggles
of the Bolivian people. When he arrives in the rainforest, he meets
an extraordinary Chiquitano Indian named Salvador who is fighting
the extinction of his people. At the same time, the clock ticks for
three multinational energy companies forced to curb global warming.
Both goals depend upon the survival of a stretch of pristine
jungle. But as Indians and oil giants join to launch the world's
largest Kyoto Protocol project--using forests to absorb dangerous
planetary greenhouse gasses--Salvador's life is threatened by
loggers collaborating with a racist Bolivian oligarchy. The quest
for a single rainforest is subsumed in a movement of national
liberation. "A Natural Nation" goes beneath the headlines,
gracefully weaving memoir, travel, history and reportage into an
unforgettable chronicle of a "poor little rich country" attempting
to engage the world without losing its soul.
The way lawyers think about the law can seem deeply mysterious.
They see nuance and meaning in statutes and implications in
judicial opinions that are opaque to the rest of us. Accessible and
thought provoking, Sharpening the Legal Mind explains how lawyers
analyze the cases and controversies that come before the courts.
Written by William Powers Jr., the former president of the
University of Texas at Austin, this book is an authoritative
introduction to the academic study of law and legal reasoning,
including insights into the philosophy of law and the intellectual
history of legal thought. Powers discusses the methods lawyers use
to interpret the law, the relation between law and morals, and the
role of courts in shaping the law. In eight chapters, he follows
the historical debate on these issues and others through different
generations and movements in American legal thought-formalism,
realism, positivism-to critical legal studies and postmodern
theory. The perfect read for anyone looking for a primer on legal
reasoning, Sharpening the Legal Mind demystifies the debates and
approaches to thinking like a lawyer that profoundly influence the
rule of law in our lives.
