The story of the great 1934 general strike in San Francisco. A
classic of working-class journalism.
In order to adapt to the ever-increasing demands of
telecommunication needs, today's network operators are implementing
100 Gb/s per dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel
transmission. At those data rates, the performance of fiberoptic
communication systems is degraded significantly due to intra- and
inter-channel fiber nonlinearities, polarization-mode dispersion
(PMD), and chromatic dispersion. In order to deal with those
channel impairments, novel advanced techniques in modulation and
detection, coding and signal processing are needed. This unique
book represents a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the
fundamentals of optical communications, signal processing and
coding for optical channels. It is the first to integrate the
fundamentals of coding theory with the fundamentals of optical
communication.

Over the millennia, the legend of a great deluge has endured in the
biblical story of Noah and in such Middle Eastern myths as the epic
of Gilgamesh. Now two distinguished geophysicists have discovered a
catastrophic event that changed history, a gigantic flood 7,600
years ago in what is today the Black Sea.
Using sound waves and coring devices to probe the sea floor,
William Ryan and Walter Pitman revealed clear evidence that this
inland body of water had once been a vast freshwater lake lying
hundreds of feet below the level of the world's rising oceans.
Sophisticated dating techniques confirmed that 7,600 years ago the
mounting seas had burst through the narrow Bosporus valley, and the
salt water of the Mediterranean had poured into the lake with
unimaginable force, racing over beaches and up rivers, destroying
or chasing all life before it. The rim of the lake, which had
served as an oasis, a Garden of Eden for farms and villages in a
vast region of semi-desert, became a sea of death. The people fled,
dispersing their languages, genes, and memories.
Dakota "Dax" Maddox is content to fade into the shadows of the
Oubliette. Among the cast-off and the lost, Dax is at home in the
crumbling neighborhoods more commonly called the Hole. The world
had turned, and Dakota had fallen back to where he had started. He
had been there and done that, fighting the good fight for God and
country. But his war is long over, his country fractured, and his
God dead. Dakota believes that the darkness holds no more
surprises. The light of a beautiful woman will show Dakota the truth
hiding in the inky shadows around him. For her, he will descend
through mystery, murder and much more. Dax will have to clear his
own name. He will face a genuine evil that writhes beyond the light
of civilization. Dax will have to confront reality-bending dangers
and overcome the ghosts of his past. In the end, his greatest
challenge will be the darkness within himself.
A Palm Sunday/Easter Story for All Ages The uniqueness of this book
is that the Lord, through a message given to a church on a Palm
Sunday, inspired it. The message is for all ages, but especially
for the young. It is meant to provide a sense of being special to
the Lord no matter the child's age or situation. It brings the
child and parent into a bond, while telling the story of a Saviour
who loves both of them. It helps take away the fear of death with
the knowledge that Jesus has provided a Heaven. It shows that Jesus
rewards us no matter how small the task may seem and that He never
forgets to reward. The story is biblically correct in that Jesus
rode a donkey into Jerusalem on that day. If we are to lift up any
animal on Palm Sunday it should be not a rabbit but a donkey, which
is a sign of meekness and peace. Born in a small community in
southern Ohio, George William Ryan graduated with a degree in
chemistry and biology. He worked in the plastics field for such
companies as B.F. Goodrich Co., Chrysler Corporation and Occidental
Petroleum before starting a consulting business in 1974. He is
presently the owner of the Ryan Development Corporation, serves on
several boards and is listed as an expert executive by the
International Executive Service Core as well as in the Who's Who
Registry of the Society of Plastics Engineers. His most important
work is as a servant of God and the current president of the
Missionary Evangelical Church of Christ.
