The first edition of Sexual Conduct, published in 1973, swiftly became a landmark text in the sociology of sexuality. It went on to profoundly shape the ideas of several generations of scholars and has become the foundation text of what is now known as the "social constructionist" approach to sexuality. The present edition, revised, updated, and containing new introductory and concluding materials, introduces a classic text to a new generation of students and professionals. Traditional views of human sexuality posit models of man and woman in which biological arrangements are translated into sociocultural imperatives. This is best summarized in the phrase "anatomy is destiny." Consequently, the almost exclusive concern has been with the power of biology and nature in sexual conduct as opposed to understanding the significance and impact of social life. In Sexual Conduct, Gagnon and Simon lucidly argue that sexual activities, of all kinds, may be understood as the outcome of a complex psychosocial process of development. Using the social script theory, the authors trace the ways in which sexuality is learned and fitted into particular moments in the lifecycle and in different modes of behavior. Sexual Conduct is a major attempt to consider sexuality within a non-biological, social psychological framework. It is a valuable addition to the study of human sexuality, and will be of interest to students of sociology, psychology, psychiatry, social work, and medicine.
Hell hath no fury like Barbara Hershey! You think you know her story. Chief Judge of Mega-City One, Barbara Hershey had been a powerful ally to Judge Dredd, until she became infected with an alien pathogen and - supposedly - died. Now, join fan favourite character Judge Hershey as she embarks on a new adventure beyond the grave and beyond the walls of Mega-City One, to right the wrongs of her past and dispense justice! Critically acclaimed creative team Rob Williams (Judge Dredd, Doctor Who) and Simon Fraser (Judge Dredd, Doctor Who) tell a globe-spanning, gritty story of retribution.
From a millennial media maker and award-winning social critic, an accessible, straightforward, and remarkable guide that "invites us beyond the old stories we've told about ourselves, and into the wonder of our dreams, hopes, and love--so we can find our truth and purpose" (Glennon Doyle, New York Times bestselling author) for a generation paralyzed by the pressures of life. Behind the glossy Instagram pictures, many people in their 20s and 30s are living frustrating lives: overwhelmed and confused, anxious and inauthentic, exhausted and afraid. They are leading lives that, unbeknownst to them, have been shaped by everyone but themselves. From social media to the workplace, the stories that they have believed have left them constantly seeking a better life but rarely ever finding it. Erica Williams Simon saw this all too well. At 27, she abruptly walked away from her career as a rising political media star to find her own truth and a truth that would help others finally build a life worth living. She rejected the lies that the world had taught her, and rewrote the ideas that have the power to shape a generation. You Deserve the Truth is a "refreshingly blunt take on happiness" (Publishers Weekly) and is a masterclass in how to challenge the narratives about fear, work, identity, success, love, and life. This "smart and all too real guidebook for anyone striving to craft an authentic and inspired life from the ground up" (Franchesca Ramsey, host of MTV's Decoded) gives you the tools you need in order to break free from the narratives holding you back from starting an exciting new phase in a beautiful life.
In this "intriguing, insightful and extremely educational" novel, the world's most famous hacker teaches you easy cloaking and counter-measures for citizens and consumers in the age of Big Brother and Big Data (Frank W. Abagnale). Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world's biggest companies -- and no matter how fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. As the FBI's net finally began to tighten, Mitnick went on the run, engaging in an increasingly sophisticated game of hide-and-seek that escalated through false identities, a host of cities, and plenty of close shaves, to an ultimate showdown with the Feds, who would stop at nothing to bring him down. Ghost in the Wires is a thrilling true story of intrigue, suspense, and unbelievable escapes -- and a portrait of a visionary who forced the authorities to rethink the way they pursued him, and forced companies to rethink the way they protect their most sensitive information. "Mitnick manages to make breaking computer code sound as action-packed as robbing a bank." -- NPR

Accused of terrible war crimes that he can't remember committing, the Eleventh Doctor goes on the run' with his companion Alice Obiefune, along with a mysterious amnesiac who calls herself The Squire! As they dig deep into the history of the Time War in hope of clearing the Doctor's name, the bounty hunter called The Then and The Now, a hideous perversion of spacetime, tracks them at every turn!
In this collection of essays, derived from ten year's work on the subject of sexuality and its meanings, William Simon argues that we can only make sense of our sexuality within the larger project of making sense of our humanity. The essays range widely, from changes in the social construction of deviance and perversion to the experience of adolescence and the myth of the Wild West. Through them all, the author shows how sexuality has become for us the ultimate postmodern discourse.

The construction of the Crossrail project began at North Dock in Canary Wharf in May 2009. At the height of construction it was the biggest railway construction project in Europe and is one of the largest single infrastructure investments undertaken in the UK. It consists of 21 km of new twin-bore tunnels under central London and 10 new world-class stations across one of the largest cities in the world. Crossrail Project: Infrastructure Design and Construction Volume 6 contains a collection of 22 papers submitted to the 2021 Crossrail's Technical Papers Competition. Contributions have come from members of the Crossrail organisation, its consultants as well as contractors involved in design and construction across the Crossrail project. The papers cover a multitude of disciplines including tunnelling, geotechnical engineering, rail signalling and control, rail systems & integration, rail telecommunications, and electrical engineering. As part of the enduring legacy of the Crossrail project, it is incumbent upon the organisation to share its experiences and best practices with the rest of the industry, to showcase the skills of the personnel involved and the successful delivery of each phase of works. Crossrail Project: Infrastructure Design and Construction Volume 6 offers more high-quality papers on the best practice in design and construction for large-scale underground projects.
Purposive, goal-directed behaviour is one of the defining characteristics of human beings. This volume surveys theories and research on the psychological mechanisms involved in the planning and execution of motivated social behaviour. The contributors are all leading international researchers, and their chapters discuss such exciting topics as how goals influence thinking and behaviour, how affect and social motivation interact, how unconscious motivation operates, and the relationship between habits and intentions as sources of social action. The applications of contemporary research on motivation to practical questions in clinical, organisational, educational and counselling psychology receive special attention. The book is written in a readable yet scholarly style. The chapters take a highly comprehensive and integrative approach, and the book should be of interest to students, practitioners and researchers interested in the psychology of motivation, and should also be suitable as an advanced textbook of this field.

Did Hitler (code name 'Grey Wolf') really die in 1945? The evidence says no. Here's the gripping story of what might have happened - When Truman asked Stalin in 1945 whether Hitler was dead, Stalin replied bluntly, "No". What really happened? Simon Dunstan and Gerrard Williams have compiled extensive evidence, some recently declassified, that Hitler actually fled Berlin and took refuge in a remote Nazi enclave in Argentina. Dunstan and Williams cite people, places and dates in over 500 detailed notes that identify the plan's escape route, vehicles, aircraft, U-boats and hideouts. Among the details: the CIA's possible involvement and Hitler's life in Patagonia, including his two daughters.
In November of 1965 I was seventeen, fresh out of High School and didn't know anything. I enlisted in the Army and five short months later I was freezing my ass off on a C-141 bound for Vietnam. "Three Sixty Five" is a novel that does not address any of the political issues normally associated with the conflict. Instead, it is a story of growing up, maturing, and finding out about all the good and bad that humanity has to offer. Most of all it is a story of surviving an absurd situation. Edited by William Hoffman author of "Tidewater Blood" and "Contract killer." |
