Die Seele des Kindes (1882) von William Thierry Preyer (1841 - 1897) war das "Eroffnungswerk der modernen Kinderpsychologie" (William Stern) und wurde noch mehr als 40 Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen als "Grundbuch der heutigen Kinderpsychologie" (Karl Buhler) bezeichnet. Der vorliegende Band macht die heute schwer zugangliche erste Auflage dieses Pionierwerkes wieder verfugbar. Er macht deutlich, dass die Kinderpsychologie nicht als "Ableger" der beginnenden experimentellen Psychologie entstand, sondern aus dem Bestreben heraus, der Evolutionstheorie Darwins ein weiteres Anwendungsgebiet zu erschliessen.
