A collection of papers on the origins of Italian opera and its influence in the development of western music.
Providing an account of developments from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, this text arranges themes to illustrate the chronology and unity of essential esthetic elements. Originally published in German by Musikverlag Hans Gerig, 1967.
Music example and charts illustrate the analyses, and each essay is fully annotated by the editor. In some cases, the results of original research by the editor or by others working in the field are published here for the first time. Much of the material has never before appeared in English. A score embodying the best available musical text. Historical background-what is known of the circumstances surrounding the origin of the work, including (where relevant) original source material. A detailed analysis of the music, by the editor of the volume or another well-known scholar. Other significant analytic essays and critical comments, exposing the student to a variety of opinions about the music.
Beginning with Debussy, the author traces growing freedom in the use of tonality and the different paths this emancipation took. Central to the book are the achievements of Schoenberg, Bartok, Stravinsky, and an insistence on the important role of jazz. Webern, Hindemith, and Prokofiev are also seen as important and seminal figures. The ramifications of their achievements and the individual contributions of many other composers born before 1910 are fully treated. Biographical information is given in so far as it throws light on the music. Many music examples offering representative passages, or even whole works, are analyzed. For readers who wish to pursue any aspect of the subject further, there is a comprehensive and annotated bibliography.
