This book helps adult nursing students to competently manage care of critically and acutely ill patients, and to recognise and deal with the early signs of deterioration. The book takes a practical real-life approach to care, with each chapter focusing on patients with specific problems, then interweaving the knowledge and skills needed to care for that patient. The book focuses on developing clinical assessment and decision-making skills so that students are able to care for patients who are unstable, deteriorating or critically ill, regardless of their location.
Cindy Williams, half of the comedic duo of Laverne & Shirley, has had a wild and lively career in show business. This book is an engaging and heartfelt journey from Williams's blue collar roots to unexpected stardom-from being pranked by Jim Morrison while waiting tables at Whisky a Go Go to starring in one of the most iconic shows on television. With wit and candor, Cindy tells stories of her struggles as a child growing up with meager means and dreaming of becoming an actress. She also shares many misadventures and amusing anecdotes about some of the most famous actors in Hollywood. Never taking herself too seriously, Cindy finds humor and irony in the challenging world of show business.

A collection of flash fiction (Tanzer), bookend short stories (Williams), a novella (Housley), and poetry written from father to daughter (Pawelek), Four Fathers is a hard-hitting definitive work that seeks to uncover what it takes to be a parent. These subjects are not easy, and through these introspective fathers, often agonized by the daily tensions of care-taking, we come to appreciate our own experiences more fully, or, at least prepare ourselves for what may lie ahead. Four Fathers, and each of its authors, delivers fatherhood in a multitude of thought-provoking, heartfelt ways: from Tom Williams' pair of long short stories which define a man by who he is as a son in relation to his father, and who he is as a father in relation to his son; to BL Pawelek's poetry, dedicated to his daughter, Abbey Road. Then you have Ben Tanzer's flash fiction pieces, which all seem to reflect up on the idea of "I'm a dad...what the heck do I do now?" and Dave Housley's novella begging the Osbornesque question "What the f*** is a 'Bieber?'" ADVANCE PRAISE: "Nothing can prepare us for the heart-wrenching mess that being a parent entails, but these stories and poems about fatherhood make me feel less lonely in the endeavor. At times gut-busting hilarious, devastating to the point of tears, and just plain beautiful, I'm so grateful this collection is in the world." -Paula Bomer, author of NINE MONTHS and INSIDE MADELEINE "FOUR FATHERS made me want to impregnate my wife all over again. Becoming a dad wouldn't be half as stressful with these powerful voices in my ear. From four of the sharpest literary minds on the planet, FOUR FATHERS is a quadruple helping of the wit, honesty, fear and beauty of being a dad. I can't wait to help a father-to-be throw away all the bullshit parenting books in his stack and replace it with this one amazing collection. I can't wait to tell him: 'This is what fatherhood really is.'" -Patrick Wensink, bestselling author of BROKEN PIANO FOR PRESIDENT "What a remarkable debut from Cobalt Press This impressive collection of fiction and poetry is as varied in form as it is in content. But no matter the subject, one thing remains consistent throughout: these four authors shine a brilliant light onto one of the central conundrums of contemporary fatherhood, exploring what it means to be a man who is at once a role model, a law giver, a boo-boo soother (in short: this huge figure in his child's life) and yet also struggles to feel like a competent, responsible, stable grown-up. In language that will have you simultaneously chuckling and tearing up, Four Fathers gets to the heart of what it means to be a dad today." -- Brian Gresko, Editor of WHEN I FIRST HELD YOU "Replete with fathers, sons, daughters, fairy tales, gunfire and Justin Bieber songs, FOUR FATHERS is a collection that resonates not just with parents, but with anyone who has ever felt the burning pull of unconditional love. Far from rehashing familiar tropes, these authors prefer to examine what makes their subjects unique. Their focus on memory and moment illuminates the connections between childhood and parenthood: these are both times of growth, learning, doubt and, perhaps, the eras in which we make the most mistakes, and find the most forgiveness." -Aubrey Hirsch, author of WHY WE NEVER TALK ABOUT SUGAR "The anguish and joys of modern fatherhood - the shock of seeing your father's face in the mirror while you're shaving, the horror of watching your son succumb to Bieber Fever, the embarrassment of knowing the meaning of the term venti, the suicidal thoughts that follow the crime of clipping your child's nails too closely, the worrying about how to provide and protect - they're all here, in this absorbing volume, rendered in four genres and four unforgettable voices." -Susan Muaddi Darraj, author of THE INHERITANCE OF EXILE
More than 60 years had passed before I found them. Dozens and dozens of letters written to my family during WWII- from total strangers- to tell my great-grandmother that her son had been captured and was being held as a POW. How did they know this? Well, it seems the short-wave radio had held all the answers. POWs were allowed to state their names and hometowns on the radio, and sometimes relay a short message to their families. Scores of Americans, listening to the German propaganda from so far away, heard my grandfather's information, and took it upon themselves to write to my great-grandmother. All of these dear people wanted to give my great-grandmother a measure of comfort to know her son was alive. That was only the beginning of my journey.
The use of touch in counselling and psychotherapy is rarely spoken of. A contentious topic, there is little research on therapists' current practices and views, and almost none relating to work with younger clients. This book reveals working therapists' practices, beliefs and understandings of the use of touch in therapeutic contexts with children, adolescents and adults. Six broad themes were identified: the meaning of touch; risks, fears and concerns; power and control issues; contracting, consents and note-taking; the raising of consciousness; and to touch or not to touch. Decisions as to whether or not to use touch were found to be complex, informed by a wide range of societal, cultural, methodological and philosophical discourses, as well as via personal experience and an understanding of potential impact on the client. Clients with abuse issues, work with children, and working cross-culturally were all identified as specific areas to consider. This book may be of use to counsellors, psychotherapists, supervisors and ethics committees, informing ethical practice, and decision making. It may also be helpful for training purposes.
Two episodes from the Tom Baker era 'Doctor Who', devoted to the Doctor's favourite metallic pooch - K9. In 'The Invisible Enemy', a mysterious cloud is causing havoc in space, infecting all those who pass through it with an intelligent virus which could spread throughout the whole galaxy. The Doctor (Baker) and Leela (Louise Jameson) try to come to the rescue, but the TARDIS passes through the cloud itself, leaving the Doctor infected with the virus. He and Leela then try to find help at a nearby medical station, where they meet the eccentric Professor Marius and his pet robot K-9. In 'K9 and Company', the pilot from the 'Doctor Who' spin-off series, the Doctor's former companion, Sarah-Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), arrives to take up residence with her Aunt Lavinia at the village of Moreton. She finds the house deserted apart from a crate marked for her attention, which turns out to contain a gift from the Time Lord: K9 Mark 3. The mechanical dog teams up with Sarah to investigate Aunt Lavinia's disappearance, and together they unearth evidence of witchcraft.
