During the last decade impressive development and signi?cant advance of the physics of nonideal plasmas in astrophysics and in laboratories can be observed, creating new possibilities for experimental research. The enormous progress in laser technology, but also ion beam techniques, has opened new ways for the production and diagnosis of plasmas under extreme conditions, relevant for astrophysics and inertially con?ned fusion, and for the study of laser-matter interaction. In shock wave experiments, the equation of state and further properties of highly compressed plasmas can be investigated. This experimental progress has stimulated the further development of the statistical theory of nonideal plasmas. Many new results for thermodynamic and transport properties, for ionization kinetics, dielectric behavior, for the stopping power, laser-matter interaction, and relaxation processes have been achieved in the last decade. In addition to the powerful methods of quantum statistics and the theory of liquids, numerical simulations like path integral Monte Carlo methods and molecular dynamic simulations have been applied.

This volume features contributions from participants of the ESRF symposium on "Immunotherapy in 2020a "Visions and Trends for Targeting Inflammatory Diseases" held in Potsdam near Berlin, Germany, in October 2006.

The symposium presentations covered the main mechanisms of immunoregulation such as peripheral and central tolerance, epigenetic programming, immunologic memory, and regulatory networks in inflammation as well as novel experimental and clinical approaches for targeting inflammation in autoimmunity and transplantation. An important related question is how recent findings in immunological research can lead to improved diagnostics, new drugs, and better therapies. The targeting of novel pathways and immunoregulatory mechanisms, the challenge of immunologic memory for lastingly successful anti-inflammatory therapy, new approaches for adoptive T cell and polyclonal antibody therapies, and the individualization of immunomodulatory therapies are thereby topics of this volume.

Competition is one of the driving forces of our time - everything can suddenly turn into a challenge or a contest. Art, on the other hand - that is outside the art market-can be seen as a free space in which something genuinely unique emerges. That this construct is a historical exception is revealed by a fresh look at the early modern period: Here, the principle of competition was thought to be decisive for artistic work. What is more, the competitive habitus of imitation, competition and surpassing - imitatio, aemulatio and superatio - was supposed to bring about cultural progress as such. Even Leonardo knew that "good envy" spurs high performance. Hence, some of the most famous works of the Renaissance and Baroque periods emerged from the competitive battles that artists in early modern Europe fought among themselves, as well as with long-dead models from antiquity. Studierende, Singles, junge Familien, Gefluchtete, Menschen jeder Altersgruppe und jeglicher Herkunft wollen urban leben. Die stadtische Lebensweise hat sich zu einer Lebenskonstruktion, zu einem Urbanitatsnarrativ entwickelt, aufgeladen mit Erwartungen fur ein besseres Leben, mehr Anerkennung und neue gesellschaftliche Moeglichkeiten. Gleichzeitig steht der urbane Raum aber auch fur Segregations- und Homogenisierungstendenzen, fur uberteuerte Mieten und investoren gesteuerte Gentrifizierung. Beklagt wird ein Mangel an wohnortnahen Arbeitsmoeglich keiten, das Verschwinden von lokalen Geschaften und Dienstleistungen. Es ist ein massives Konfliktpotential, das jetzt durch die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zusatzlich forciert wird. Das Narrativ verspricht die Verknupfung von Arbeiten, Wohnen und Versorgung in einem praktikablen, alltagstauglichen und uberschaubaren Lebensumfeld. Anfang des Jahres 2008 demonstrierten vor allem junge Kalkerinnen und Kalker mit Migrationshintergrund uber mehrere Tage gegen ihre Benachteiligung in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Dazu fanden Demonstrationen, spontane Treffen, Sitzblockaden, Mahnwachen, Diskussionsrunden und weitere Aktionen statt. Die Ereignisse wurden in den Medien auf stadtischer, regionaler und nationaler Ebene diskutiert. In dem Forschungsprojekt ging es unter anderem darum, die Perspektiven und Reaktionen der Beteiligten der Demonstrationen und der verschiedenen Akteurinnen und Akteuren im Stadtteil zu untersuchen. Ziel des Projektes war, an dem konkreten Beispiel der Kalker Ereignisse das Potenzial zivilgesellschaftlicher Aktionen von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund aufzuzeigen."

Urbane Raume sind Transit- und Kontaktraume. Hier treffen Differenzen aufeinander, werden Lebensentwurfe ausgehandelt, globale Entwicklungen auf vielfaltige Weise lokal interpretiert und in den urbanen Alltag ubertragen. Dabei ist die Grossstadt nicht nur Hintergrund oder Buhne solcher Prozesse, sondern zugleich Generator und Katalysator von Mobilitat. Zum Umgang mit Differenzen Wolf-Dietrich Bukow/Claudia Nikodem/Erika Schulze/Erol Yildiz Die Rede von der Parallelgesellschaft speist sich aus zwei sehr unterschiedlichen Quellen, namlich einerseits aus der Stadtforschung und andererseits aus einem migrationspolitischen Alarmismus der Medien. Allerdings geben beide Quellen einzeln nicht viel her, nur verknupft scheint daraus uberhaupt eine Debatte entstanden zu sein. Dennoch bleibt es erstaunlich, dass sie sich entfalten konnte und seit nunmehr gut acht Jahren sogar eine betrachtliche Wirkung zeigt. Bis heute gibt es fast keine systematische Auseinandersetzung mit Parallelgese- schaften und so etwas ist wohl auch kaum zu erwarten, weil institutionell geschlossene Gesellschaften in einer globalisierten Weltgesellschaft kaum vorstellbar sind. Doch gehen wir lieber langsam vor und kreisen die Thematik schrittweise ein. Dann wird auch deutlich, an welcher Stelle die Beitrage dieses Sammelbandes einhaken. Aus welchen Quellen wird hier geschopft? Wie oben erwahnt kann man zunachst einmal zwei Quellen ausmachen, die e- zeln kaum ertragreich genug sind, aber zusammen synergetische Effekte herv- bringen."

Durch Migrationsprozesse, aber auch im Rahmen zunehmender funktionaler Ausdifferenzierung und der Pluralisierung von Lebensstilen haben sich gerade die Grossstadte zu multikulturellen Formationen - nicht nur in ethischer Hinsicht - entwickelt. Auch ist der offentliche Diskurs in Politik und Wissenschaft haufig von einem Lamento uber den Zerfall der Stadte, der Rede von dem "Scheitern der multikulturellen Gesellschaft" sowie der Hervorhebung ethnisch-kultureller Differenzen als einem zentralen gesellschaftlichen Problem gepragt.
Diesem Ansatz setzen die Autoren einen erweiterten Multikulturalismusbegriff entgegen, der sich auf die stadtische Vielfalt im weitesten Sinne bezieht. Zugleich wird hier vertreten, dass es trotz Konflikten und Risiken, trotz Ausgrenzung und Rassismus sehr wohl ein funktionierendes lebenspraktisches Miteinander, eine Selbstverstandlichkeit im stadtischen Alltagsleben, gibt, dass gerade die urbane Bevolkerung Kompetenzen entwickelt hat, trotz spezifischer "privater" Differenzen "offentlich" miteinander umgehen zu konnen."
