The Deutsches Literatur-Lexikon is one of the best known, most comprehensive and most reliable reference works on German literature. Spanning the ages, the work encompasses writers from all eras, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Volume 28 contains, among other, articles on Walther von der Vogelweide, Fred and Maxie Wander, Aby Warburg, Jakob Wassermann and Max Weber. In line with the encyclopedia's broad definition of the term literature, information is also included on numerous specialists in their fields, e.g. conductor Bruno Walter and footballer Fritz Walter.

The study analyzes strategies serving the constitution of meaning in AReinfried and ApolloniusA, proceeding from there to propose a new definition of what it is that significantly distinguishes romances on courtly love (Minne) and adventure from other verse romances. As specific expressions of aristocratic identity and existence, courtly love and knightly adventure are dovetailed with the topic of bridal wooing to reflect the paradigmatic status of the theme of power legitimization and the visibly exemplary nature of rulers and their life-styles against the background of the history of Christian redemption. As AApolloniusA was designed as a riposte to AReinfriedA, the two romances are clearly seen to stand in a discourse relationship to each other.

More than 100 years after the publication of Ferdinand Khull's editio princeps, the present volume is the first to make Konrad von Stoffeln's "Gauriel von Muntabel" available in a critical edition that takes full account of the debates on philological editing practice that have taken place over the last few decades. The text itself is preceded by detailed studies on the dating, localization and literary significance of this last Middle High German Arthurian romance in rhyming couplets, alongside a full description of the way the work has been handed down to us. The volume closes with notes on those passages of the work requiring comment, an index of names and a bibliography.
