th This workshop was the 15 in a series that addresses the subject
of the dynamics of nuclear reactions. These workshops are dedicated
to the concept that bringing together scientists from diverse areas
of nuclear reactions promotes the vibrant exchange of ideas. This
workshop hosted presentations from experimentalists and theorists,
intermediate energy to ultrarelativistic energies, and final
results to recent speculations. Many of these scientists would not
normally be exposed to the work done in other subfields. Thus the
Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics plays a unique role in
information exchange and the stimulation of new ides. The field of
nuclear dynamics has a bright future. New accelerators are being
planned and completed around the world. New detectors are being
constructed. New models and theories are being developed to
describe these phenomena. The Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics
will continue to promote this lively and compelling field of
research. WOLFGANG BAUER AND GARY D. WESTFALL v Previous Workshops

members of the organizing committees. The chairpersons of the
conferences are underlined.
This volume presents the proceedings of the 8th Winter Workshop on
Nuclear Dynamics, which focused on the interaction between
experimentalists and theorists. The papers reflect the attention
that was given to working out unifying concepts between different
energy regimes - from the Coulomb barrier to the ultra-relativistic
RHIC domain.
Hydropneumatic suspensions systems combine the excellent properties
of gas springs with the favourable damping properties of hydraulic
fluids. The advantages of these systems are particularly
appropriate for automotive applications, such as passenger cars,
trucks and agricultural equipment. In this book, Dr. Bauer provides
an extensive overview of hydropneumatic suspension systems.
Starting with a comparison of different types of suspension
systems, the author subsequently describes the theoretical
background associated with spring and damping characteristics of
hydropneumatic systems and furthermore explains the design of the
most important system components. Additionally he gives an overview
of level control systems and various special functions. Finally the
technology is illustrated by design examples and the outlook for
future hydropneumatic suspensions is discussed.
These are the proceedings of the 141h Winter \Vorkshop on Nuclear
Dynamics, the latest of a serif'S of workshops that was started in
1~)78. This series has grown into a tradition. bringing together
experimental and theoretical expertise from all areas of the study
of nudear dynamics. Following tllf' tradition of the Workshop the
program covered a broad range of topics aerof'S a large energy
range. At the low energy end llluitifragmentation and its
relationship to the nuclear liquid to gas phase transition was
disclIssf'd in grf'at df'- tail. New pxpf'rimental data, refined
analysis techniques, and new theoretical effort have lead to
considerable progress. In the AGS energy range we see the emergence
of systematic data that contribute to our understanding of the
reaction dynamics. The workshop also showf'd that at CERN energies
Itadronic data become much more precise and complet.e and a renewed
emphasis on basic hadronic processes and hadronic struc- ture as a
precondition to understand the initial conditions and a basis for
systematic comparisons. Wolfgang Bauer Michigan State Univcr'sity

the first edition, this new edition puts an additional focus on
damping functions as well as applications / projects and contains
various additional details such as proportional valves, all-wheel
suspension or dediated power supply. Furthermore, suspension
testing has been added as a new chapter.

th The 13 Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics is the latest
installment in a series of workshops that was started in 1978. This
series has grown into a tradition, bringing together experimental
and theoretical expertise from all areas of the study of nuclear
dynamics. As always, the organizers had placed emphasis on the
important aspect of cross fertilization between the different
energy regimes and wa.ys of viewing a collision of energetic
nuclei. This emphasis is reflected in the broad range of topics
covered in these proceedings. Phase transitions in nuclear
collisions received most of the attention during this workshop, as
indicated by the number of contributions on this subject. Many of
the questions in connection with these topics remain not settled
and will have a huge impact on the physics that can be extracted
from experiments at the future Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.
While the experimental program at the AGS is winding down, the NSCL
upgrade and RHIC promise a bright future for our field in the USA.
In Europe and Asia, major new facilities are under construction as
well. The excitement and anticipation in connection with these new
opportunities are reflected in these proceedings as well. Wolfgang

Award-winning journalist Wolfgang Bauer and photographer Stanislav
Krupar were the first undercover reporters to document the journey
of Syrian refugees from Egypt to Europe. Posing as English teachers
in 2014, they were direct witnesses to the brutality of smuggler
gangs, the processes of detainment and deportation, the dangers of
sea-crossing on rickety boats, and the final furtive journey
through Europe. Combining their own travels with other eyewitness
accounts in the first book of reportage of its kind, Crossing the
Sea brings to life both the systemic problems and the individual
faces behind the crisis, and is a passionate appeal for more
humanitarian refugee policies.
