This book completes Wolfgang Dietrich's path-breaking trilogy of
the Many Peaces; the foundation of the highly innovative approach
to peace and conflict as taught and applied at the University of
Innsbruck, Austria. Where Volume 1 elaborated the transrational
philosophy of the many peaces and Volume 2 discussed the curricular
and didactic aspects of elicitive conflict transformation (ECM),
Volume 3 provides principles and examples of ECM's practical
application. The author drafts the easy use of ECM as a brand new
method of conflict work that can be applied from both intra and
interpersonal conflicts to the highest political and diplomatic
level. This book would form an excellent basis for leadership and
relationship training of future peace workers within the frame of
elicitive conflict transformation.
"Thirty outstanding scholars write about the etymological meaning,
the religious, legal and political use of the word peace. This
gives astonishing insights into classical notions and hardly known
interpretations of peace in their cultures. The result is a book
fascinating for peace researchers and highly rewarding for a
broader audience"--Provided by publisher.
International intervention on humanitarian grounds has been a
contentious issue for decades. First, it pits the principle of
state sovereignty against claims of universal human rights. Second,
the motivations of intervening states may be open to question when
avowals of moral action are arguably the fig leaf covering an
assertion of power for political advantage. These questions have
been salient in the context of the Balkan and African wars and U.S.
policy in the Middle East. This volume undertakes a serious,
systematic, and broadly international review of the issues.
In this ground-breaking volume, the social function of 'peace' is
explored through the prism of cultural pluralism. Prominent
scholars and thinkers from more than thirty different cultures
reflect on the notion of peace, and the diversity of their
perspectives highlights the different cultural perceptions
surrounding the meaning and scope of peace. What we understand as
'peace' is dependent on the context within which it is used. Some
cultures have a multitude of notions that translate into English
simply as peace, whereas an equivalent to peace in the European
sense does not even exist in others. This volume shows that the
concept of world peace can only be realised as a plural of 'many
peaces'; an understanding of peace cannot be reached without the
explicit acceptance of the many different notions of peace. In
these turbulent times, there is an urgent need to explore new ways
of reflecting on and facilitating the promotion of peace. Although
the dominant paradigm is still the dogmatic application of a
universal notion of a single peace, this approach is shown to be
increasingly ineffectual and inappropriate. This paperback version,
with new preface, reveals how adopting a multi-faceted approach to
'peace' could ultimately contribute to a more authentic
understanding of peace across the world.
During the last few years, routine applications of NMR techniques
have been further developed. Spectrometers of the latest generation
offer new types of experiments, such as spinlock and
inverse-detected methods. In this third, revised and expanded
edition, new methodology is introduced and incorporated into new
exercises. In addition, a new chapter has been introduced which
demonstrates the fully detailed interpretation of two typical
examples.
transrationalen.
Innsbrucker Universitatslehrgang fur Friedensstudien entwickelt
