The labour markets in the United States and in Germany could hardly be more different. The USA, with its tremendous job growth, is often held up as the prime example of the job-creating power of unfettered markets, while Germany is seen as the textbook case of an overregulated European labour market stifling employment growth. For many policy advisers the lessons are clear: if Europeans want to emulate the success of the Americans, they must deregulate their economies. On the other hand, economists in the USA, impressed with Germany's income growth and social stability, have shown increasing interest in the role that non-market institutions play in the German context. This work provides an in-depth analysis of the functioning of various labour market institutions in both the USA and Germany. In close studies of the regulatory differences between the two countries, the authors examine the impact of those institutions on economic performance. On the basis of their findings, they argue that the choice is not one between regulation and deregulation, but rather between different forms and degrees of regulation.

This volume is devoted to the hysteresis phenomenon in economic relationships. This topic has received renewed attention in economics especially in the late eigh ties. Since the issue is not settled there is still a growing literature on it. The aim of this volume is to summarize the findings, present new results, and to draw attention to further research. All papers are written for this volume and are not published elsewhere. I am very grateful to all authors and referees without whose prompt and generous help this volume would not appear in the present form. High and persistent unemployment rates in Europe during the eighties gave rise to a lively discussion about the nature and causes of joblessness. Among other sources structural unemployment was blamed for the lack of response of unemployment to increasing aggregate demand. Renewed attention was thus devoted to an analysis of the magnitude and the development of structural unemployment as well to its possi ble determinants. In this literature, the Beveridge curve experienced a resurrection and, at first glance, it seemed to be an appropriate tool to analyse the aforementioned issues. However, it was soon recognized that the Beveridge curve, i. e. the relation between unemployment and vacancies, was anything but stable, thus requiring a care ful distinction between dynamic loops around a (stable?) long-run Beveridge curve and possible shifts due to, say, an increasing mismatch between labor supplied and demanded. The controversy is far from being settled at the time of this writing. This book contains a collection of hitherto unpublished papers which are devoted to a theoretical and econometric analysis of structural unemployment. The papers put considerable emphasis on the question to what extent the Beveridge curve can serve as an adequate tool for such studies. The countries under consideration are Germany and Austria. In what follows a very brief summary of each paper will be outlined. Franz and Siebeck present, at some length, a theoretical and econometric analysis of the Beveridge curve in Germany."

Die Festschrift zum 60. Geburtstag von Heinz Konig enthalt Beitrage namhafter Wissenschaftler zu aktuellen wirtschaftstheoretischen und wirtschaftspolitischen Problemen. Dabei handelt es sich sowohl um theoretische als auch um empirische Arbeiten. Der Band gliedert sich in sechs Kapitel. Das erste Kapitel behandelt gesamtwirtschaftliche Probleme und enthalt Beitrage von G. Bombach, W. Hankel, W. Krelle und H.-J. Krupp. Der Untersuchung von Geld und Inflation widmet sich das zweite Kapitel. Die Autoren sind R. Dornbusch, W. Franz, W. Gaab, H.J. Jaksch, G. Kirchgassner und H. Seitz. Mit makrookonomischen Konsumfunktionen (R. Henn, G. Nakhaeizadeh, J. Wolters) und Nachfrageanalysen fur diskrete Alternativen (G. Ronning) beschaftigt sich das dritte Kapitel. Mikrookonomische Arbeiten von M. Beckmann, K. Conrad und H.H. Nachtkamp sind im vierten Kapitel zusammengefasst.
