Mary Anning lived about 200 years ago. A bright girl from a poor
family living in a small town on the south coast of England, she
became a successful fossil hunter, dealer and self-taught
scientist. While not fully recognised in her own lifetime because
she was a woman and of the wrong social class, she is now heralded
as a leading figure in the science of palaeontology, which at the
time did not even have a name Her story is well known but there is
only one image of her, painted shortly before her death at age 47.
She made many of her important discoveries of 'mythical sea
dragons' as a teenager and in her twenties. Now, AI technology
enables us to tell Mary's exceptional story with brand-new images -
for curious readers of all ages and to help inspire today's young
fossil entrepreneurs who follow in her wake.
A personal journey through the material culture & the magic.
South Seas islanders had little access to metals or precious
stones. They crafted superlative and fabled adornments from nature.
They created currencies and ground-breaking trading networks that
nurtured relationships and redefined value. This is their story.
The ocean is the womb of all life on earth. It is beautiful and
bizarre, violent and mysterious. Inhabited by a cast of characters
stolen from fantasy, it's a dystopian world where dragons are real,
and monsters are commonplace. Today's spectacular marine life has
an ancient history preserved in stone - fossil strata that read
like dramatic pages from the longest story ever told - tales of
evolution, extinction, and surprising continuity. Having thrived a
tumultuous 500 million years, this marine kingdom is now challenged
by a new, arrogant and domineering life form. This book looks
beyond the media focus on climate change and extinction to
celebrate the continuity of ocean life. I'll take you on a personal
journey to explore origins and destinies, from primordial soup to
today's threatened oceans - towards a future we can influence. We
always have a choice.
