A Capitalist Manifesto - Understanding the Market Economy and Defending Liberty (Paperback): Gary Wolfram A Capitalist Manifesto - Understanding the Market Economy and Defending Liberty (Paperback)
Gary Wolfram
R404 Discovery Miles 4 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Communist Manifesto of 1848-the blueprint for modern totalitarian government-promises utopia but delivers dictatorship, poverty and misery everywhere its tried. Yet many of the tenets of this ideology endure among leftist thinkers, despite repeated and universal failure. The question is why? In A Capitalist Manifesto, Gary Wolfram answers that question with a clear explanation of the only economic system compatible with individual liberty, social justice and freedom: Capitalism. From barter to free markets, Wolfram explains the nature of money, the creation of wealth and the brilliance of a system based not on the state but rather on millions of unique individuals deciding what is best.

Metternich - Strategist and Visionary (Paperback): Wolfram Siemann Metternich - Strategist and Visionary (Paperback)
Wolfram Siemann; Translated by Daniel Steuer
R628 Discovery Miles 6 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

“A superb biographical portrait and work of historical analysis…Let us hope that it will serve if not as a manual then at least as an inspiration—good statesmanship is needed more than ever.” —Brendan Simms, Wall Street Journal “Brilliantly refreshes our understanding of Metternich and his era…[He] was an intellectual in politics of a kind now rare.” —Christopher Clark, London Review of Books “Succeed[s] in forcing readers to wonder whether Metternich’s efforts to defend an essentially conservative order against populists and terrorists are so different from the struggles that liberal democracies face today.” —Andrew Moravcsik, Foreign Affairs Metternich is often portrayed as the epitome of reactionary conservatism, a ruthless aristocrat who used his power to stifle liberalism and oppose the dreams of social change that inspired the revolutionaries of 1848. But in this landmark biography, the first to make use of state and family papers, Wolfram Siemann paints a fundamentally new image of the man, revealing him to be more forward-looking and nimble than we have ever recognized. Clemens von Metternich emerged from the horrors of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars committed above all to the preservation of peace. As the Austrian Empire’s foreign minister and chancellor he was, as Henry Kissinger has observed, the father of realpolitik. But short of compromising on his overarching goal, Metternich aimed to accommodate liberalism and nationalism. Siemann draws on previously unexamined archives to bring this dazzling man to life. Hailed as a masterpiece of historical writing, Metternich is indispensable for understanding the forces of revolution, reaction, and moderation that shaped the modern world.

Social Costs Today - Institutional Analyses of the Present Crises (Hardcover): Wolfram Elsner, Pietro Frigato, Paolo Ramazzotti Social Costs Today - Institutional Analyses of the Present Crises (Hardcover)
Wolfram Elsner, Pietro Frigato, Paolo Ramazzotti
R1,256 Discovery Miles 12 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary, strictly interdependent, financial, socio-economic and ecological crises are associated with a pattern of economic activity that subordinates substantial short and long term interests of society to sectional groups and vested interests within the economy. This book reassesses the work of key institutional economists such as Veblen, Commons, Clark and Kapp in the context of the current crisis and the theory of social costs. This book addresses the need for an updated theoretical framework to address those crises, namely social costs as extremely heterogeneous, widespread and cumulatively self-reinforcing adverse effects, induced by the ordinary functioning of business and market institutions in advanced global capitalism and offers evidence-based analyses of essential dimensions of the contemporary financial, socio-economic and ecological crises, and the policies required to deal with them.

Governance, Citizenship and the New European Football Championships - The European Spectacle (Hardcover): Wolfram Manzenreiter,... Governance, Citizenship and the New European Football Championships - The European Spectacle (Hardcover)
Wolfram Manzenreiter, Georg Spitaler
R2,707 Discovery Miles 27 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past decade, European football has seen tremendous changes impacting upon its international framework as well as local traditions and national institutions. Processes of Europeanization in the fields of economy and politics provided the background for transformations of the production and consumption of football on a transnational scale. In the course of such rearrangements, football tournaments like the UEFA Championship or the European Champions League turned into mega-events and media spectacles attracting ever-growing audiences. The experience of participating in these events offers some of the very few occasions for the display and embodiment of identities within a European context. This volume takes the 2008 EUROs hosted by Austria and Switzerland as a case study to analyze the political and cultural significance of the tournament from a multidisciplinary angle. What are the special features and spatial arrangements of a UEFAesque Europe, in comparison to alternative possibilities of a Europe? Situating the sport tournament between interpretations of collective European ritual and European spectacle, the key research question will ask what kind of Europe was represented in the cultural, political and economic manifestations of the 2008 EUROs. This book was published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.

Disorganization Theory - Explorations in Alternative Organizational Analysis (Hardcover): John Hassard, Mihaela Kelemen, Julie... Disorganization Theory - Explorations in Alternative Organizational Analysis (Hardcover)
John Hassard, Mihaela Kelemen, Julie Wolfram Cox
R5,342 Discovery Miles 53 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Organizational analysis has moved in a number of directions since its origins in mainstream theories of positivism and functionalism. This challenging new book sets out an alternative agenda for the field, discussing existing critical discourses, whilst exploring a selection of emerging ideas and arguments.

Addressing a series of key epistemological, conceptual and methodological issues, Disorganization Theory is designed to encourage reflexive thinking on the part of the reader. Influenced by critical philosophies of deconstruction and discourse, the book not only offers insight into established debates surrounding, for example, postmodernism and actor-network theory, but also brings forth new insights in the field: mimesis, consumption, retrospection, decoration, governmentality, and fluidity theories are all discussed.

Written by an international team of leading organizational theorists, this book is an important and contentious addition to the literature. It is an ideal companion for students and researchers working in the fields of advanced organization and management theory, and critical management studies.

Social Costs and Public Action in Modern Capitalism - Essays Inspired by Karl William Kapp's Theory of Social Costs... Social Costs and Public Action in Modern Capitalism - Essays Inspired by Karl William Kapp's Theory of Social Costs (Hardcover)
Wolfram Elsner, Pietro Frigato, Paolo Ramazzotti
R4,444 Discovery Miles 44 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Social Costs approach to the globalised capitalist market economy has gained new relevance in recent years. The present situation is one of widespread and increasing deterioration of the social, cultural, democratic, and environmental frameworks of advanced capitalist market societies. This deterioration is indicated by the threats of unemployment, precarious working conditions and increasing income/status inequality, uneven geographical developments, and the exploitation and undermining of the institutional fabric of the society. It is aggravated by the rapid extension - at local, national, regional and global scales - of ecological disruption. So the global capitalist market economy is characterised by a great deal of instability and so-called true uncertainty, which largely undermine its coordinating and welfare-enhancing capacity. The view suggested by Karl William Kapp's seminal evolutionary open-systems approach is that these processes and problems are the outcome of a widening gap between private individualist economic, and societal values or, to use Karl Polanyi's terms, of the ever increasing disembeddedness of the economy from society and of the subjugation of society to the economy. The key actor in this process is business or, more specifically, it is the increasingly dominant, globalised, deregulated and disembedded hierarchical and power system of business enterprise. Current analyses of the global capitalist market economy are overdue to be undertaken making use of the powerful analytic frame of Karl William Kapp's open systems economics. 'Social Costs and Public Action in Modern Capitalism' examines this approach from a theoretical, conceptual, empirical, policy and case study level.

In-Laws and Outlaws - Kinship and Marriage in England (Hardcover): Sybil Wolfram In-Laws and Outlaws - Kinship and Marriage in England (Hardcover)
Sybil Wolfram
R2,840 Discovery Miles 28 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1987, this book presented for the first time a unified treatment of English kinship of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This system, far from being a patchwork of historical accidents, has a remarkably logical overall structure, permeating both law and custom. To understand it one must study a wide variety of sources ranging from Parliamentary debates through accounts of contemporary events, cases and incidents to fiction of the day. The work is pertinent to current studies in a number of fields: in history it represents a systematic overview, highlighting new sources of material, while for lawyers it gives a historical context and explanation of 'family law', particularly topical for impending English legislation in this area at the time. It collects two centuries of sociological data, and presents social anthropologists with the English system for comparison with systems conventionally studied in the field and with kinship theory. Finally, it provides philosophers with a new arena in which to discuss the nature of explanations of human activities, besides raising fresh questions.

Giving short glimpses into the new Olympic sports, this book also analyses the role of these sports in Japanese society. It will also be useful to students and scholars of the Olympics and the sociology of sport, as well as Japanese culture and society.

Samuel Decker, Wolfram Elsner, Svenja Flechtner
R1,310 Discovery Miles 13 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume is a state-of-the-art compilation of diverse and innovative perspectives, principles, and a number of practiced approaches of fields, courses, and methods of pluralist economics teaching. It fosters constructive controversy aiming to incite authors and commentators to engage in fruitful debate. The complex economic problems of the 21st century require a pluralist, real-world oriented, and innovative discipline of economics, capable of addressing and teaching those complex issues to students from diverse perspectives. This volume addresses a number of key questions: Which models could be taught outside the equilibrium and optimality paradigm? Which methods could help to improve our understanding of the complex globalized economy? How can qualitative and quantitative methods be combined in a fruitful way to analyze complex economic problems? How can the academic isolation of mainstream economics that has developed over many decades be overcome, despite its attempted transdisciplinary imperialism? What role should knowledge from other disciplines play in teaching economics, and what is the relevance of transdisciplinarity? Through examining these issues, the editors and authors have created a pluralist but cohesive book on teaching economics in the contemporary classroom, drawing from ideas and examples from around the world. Principles and Pluralist Approaches in Teaching Economics is a unique collection of diverse perspectives on the methodology and applications of pluralist economics teaching. It will be a great resource for those teaching economics at various levels as well as researchers and intermediate and advanced students searching for pluralism in economics.

The Visionaries - Arendt, Beauvoir, Rand, Weil and the Salvation of Philosophy (Hardcover): Wolfram Eilenberger The Visionaries - Arendt, Beauvoir, Rand, Weil and the Salvation of Philosophy (Hardcover)
Wolfram Eilenberger
R729 R634 Discovery Miles 6 340 Save R95 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An enthralling intellectual adventure, starring the four women who created new ways of thinking from the ruins of totalitarianism and war The year is 1933. Hannah Arendt escapes Berlin, seeking refuge among the stateless gathering in Paris. Simone de Beauvoir reimagines the dance between consciousness and the world outside in a Rouen café. Ayn Rand labours in Hollywood exile on the novel she believes destined to reignite the flame of liberty in her adoptive nation. Simone Weil, disenchanted with the revolution's course in Russia, devotes her entire being to the plight of the oppressed. Over the next decade, one of the darkest in Europe's history, these four philosophers will conceive in parallel ideas that would circle the globe in the second half of the century, reshaping it. The Visionaries follows in its protagonists' footsteps from Leningrad to New York, Spain at civil war to France under occupation, as each is uprooted by totalitarianism's ascendence. It shows them facing the injustices, unfreedom and unfathomable violence of their time as women, refugees, activists, resistance fighters - but above all as thinkers. Wolfram Eilenberger expertly distils the radical philosophies each lived as well as created, showing the two to be part of the same story, all testament to the redemptive power of thought.

This volume will feature prominent researchers sharing their evidence-based successes partnering with teachers in K-12 classrooms. It will have 3 sub-sections according to grade level appropriate instruction: K-3, 4-8, 9-12. Eighteenth-Century Fiction and the Law of Property (Hardcover): Wolfram Schmidgen Eighteenth-Century Fiction and the Law of Property (Hardcover)
Wolfram Schmidgen
R2,682 Discovery Miles 26 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Eighteenth-Century Fiction and the Law of Property, Wolfram Schmidgen draws on legal and economic writings to analyze the description of houses, landscapes, and commodities in eighteenth-century fiction. His study argues that such descriptions are important to the British imagination of community. By making visible what it means to own something, they illuminate how competing concepts of property define the boundaries of the individual, of social community, and of political systems. In this way, Schmidgen recovers description as a major feature of eighteenth-century prose, and he makes his case across a wide range of authors, including Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, William Blackstone, Adam Smith, and Ann Radcliffe. The book's most incisive theoretical contribution lies in its careful insistence on the unity of the human and the material: in Schmidgen's argument, persons and things are inescapably entangled. This approach produces fresh insights into the relationship between law, literature, and economics.

Multiple Connections in European Cooperation - International Organizations, Policy Ideas, Practices and Transfers, 1967-1992... Multiple Connections in European Cooperation - International Organizations, Policy Ideas, Practices and Transfers, 1967-1992 (Paperback)
Kiran Klaus Patel, Wolfram Kaiser
R1,281 Discovery Miles 12 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International organizations are ubiquitous in contemporary Europe and the wider world. This book is the first systematic assessment of the interactions of the European Communities (EC) with other Western organizations like NATO, the OECD and the Council of Europe for the period from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. Based on fresh archival research, its various contributions explore forms of co-operation and competition between these forums and thus seek to 'provincialize' and 'de-centre' the role of the predecessors of today's European Union. Drawing on examples from a diverse set of policy fields including human rights, the environment, security, culture and regional policy, the book argues that inter-organizational dynamics are crucial to understand why the EC became increasingly hegemonic among the organizations active in governing Europe. In other words, the EU would not be what it is, were it not for the dynamics analyzed in this book. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Review of History.
